Raymond Lefevre - Soul Coaxing

Just had me in tears

Raymond Lefevre - Soul Coaxing (Ame C¢line) 1968 written by Michel Polnareff.

Never heard this version before and I stumbled upon it on youtube, the soaring strings have just made me cry.

Who, what, when, where did this track come from and has this version ever been outed on our scene? Not sure if it's a mega dancer but I kinda freakin love it!!!

It's a brilliant record Simon. I first heard it when a Radio One DJ used to use it as background music (can't remember who it was now). It came out on Major Minor over here and on a label called 4 Corners Of The World (a division of Kapp) in the U.S.

It's pure Northern IMO and one of the best string-sections ever committed to vinyl and it's probably the French sensibility of composer Michel Polnareff which touches the heartstrings 'cos he's an unbelievable arranger........

Could even have been on Radio Caroline given the Major Minor connection, certainly takes me back to my yoof! Of course, the vocal version by Peggy March was big on the scene in the late 70's - you wouldn't believe which respected modern jock melted when I played it for fun at a barbie last weekend!rolleyes.gif

Kinell Ian that's mega and your info has just added a little missing jigsaw piece into one of my memory banks, Major Minor had A Touch Of Velvet-A Sting Of Brass (I'm always banging on about that track!).

Great orchestral productions with almost "John Barry" sensitivity and crossover to the mainstream, without compromising the poetry, if you know what I mean?

This track should be out there, played now!

Superb music.

I used to give Soul Coaxing a spin in the 70's at the Key Club in Birtley when I used to do a regular spot for Alex Lowes NE Soul Club. Peggy March and similar records were not really my thing but the Lefevre inst had something going for it - haven't heard it for years now.

Yer right Harry - each to their own . I know a lot of people really enjoyed records like Peggy March so fair do's, it just wasn't my own personal taste.

It's as soulful as Black Sabbath, but I love it to bits.

Raymond Lefevre's version was a UK Top 40 hit in 1968 - that's when I remember it being played most. My brother bought his LP with that track on it. He also did a nice orchestral cover of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" on it.

Last time I heard it played out was at Billy Smart's circus.

Fits in better with the circus scene than it does the soul scene.

What was the act ?

Digressing slightly , I worked with a chap who was once part of Charlie Caroli's clown troup , in the 50s in Blackpool .....

youth club classic for the over 50's. SOUFUL ?

well that's debatable, if you you're seen dancing to it you'll be laughed at by the so called purists who probably

like the recod themselves but they won't admit it. . I suppose you'd call them TOO DARN SOUFUL. would you ?

Blimey, so much controversy over a string led instrumental LOL....

Lest people forget the Northern scene was built on string-laden instrumentals whether they be the San Remo Strings, Wingate Love-In Strings, Milton Wright & The Terra-Shirma Strings, Kaddo Strings etc, etc. String instrumentals have always been part of the scene. I find it amazing that the scene preferred to play the Peggy March crap vocal version rather than the superior Raymond Lefevre instrumental but there's no accounting for taste LOL....

Great record.

Ian you are totally out of order! I remember the fighting outside the Casino over instrumentals versus vocals it used to get out of hand and in 1974 there was a massive riot resulting in a young strings fan being hospitalized, I thought all that was over but sadly not.

Oi Soulsmith, you calling me a clown? You are heading for a custard pie in the face me old China! I think you're a "Clowns pocket"

Yeah, but the MM version by Second City Sound was an inferior cover of the Mood Mosaic original - as far as I remember anyway, it's buried deep in the wardrobe...whistling.gif

If they clapped , was it the seal of approval , or the approval of a seal ?

This enough? From Hans Knots excellent Dutch site...

https://www.offshorer...ot/feb2006b.htm

Incredible stuff Jerry. Maybe that's why I love it and why it brought a tear to Imberboy's eye. It was obviously one of the key songs of my early musical awareness - I obviously heard it on the pirates of the time when I was 'secretly' listening to my Mitshubishi transistor radio with an earplug in bed and obviously prior to me discovering other things LOL....

So "Soul Coaxing" was a key record from a pre-adolescent era when things were musically fascinating and oh so simple then etc, etc, so the tune instantly zaps me back to a pretty good phase in life, hence the nostalgia angle......

How's that for a theory Simon........?

Anyone heard If You Loved Me out recently? Personally i love it because it reminds me of my early days on the scene, 1978. It was, as some have said, absolutely massive at the time. I wonder if i should spin it at the next Move On... dammit why not eh? thumbup.gif

stuart henry was the radio 1 dj who used it for his backing track - sadly missed jock, just grateful for strings and things nowadays, Percy faith - summer the first time - another top shout

i think it paved the way for classical gas and other top instumentals, like someone said the scene was full of them in early 70s
