Giz a break Webby,

I classed the above tunes as Mecca / New York Disco sounds,I did like Thelma Houston,But not a patch on Harold Melvin,

I should and would have included Seventh Wonder in my Northern Soul tracks you love to hate but I had forgot all about it,

Fat Larry was a good disco track,

I would add to your list though with

Barbara Pennington -- 24 Hours a day

The Originals --- Down to love town

Yep,Harold Melvin's version is well better than Thelma's

Didn't Barbara P come out as a 12"? And other Levine tracks were played at the time of release were..Weakspot,You're Magic Put A Spell On Me and Running In Another Direction.....l'm not trying to put them into any class, just saying they were played at The Casino when they were first made

Yep mate I think you are correct,

Did you ever hear the cover version of 24 hours a day by Nomad

Nomad spelt backwards is Damon

A mid or early 90's dance tune,

The Damon in question is Damon Rochefort who is now the writer of Coronation Street,

That could be a good thread, singers etc who did something else etc etc etc

Right,so could that be the reason there have been so many NS references on Corrie then?

e.g. Fizz with a Wigan badge on her parka and Liz's ex was an NS DJ..Can't think of his name..

Absolutely loved 'I Wanna Give You Devotion......Back on thread Love Machine and Car Wash

Not really sure of these but what about ----

Brainstorm --- Lovin is really my game,(did the Jacksons cover this??)

Evellyn Thomas follow up to Weak Spot --- Doomsday

Brass Construction --- Ha cha cha

Aquairian Dream --- Phoenix

Over to you

Dont know if that guy was writing back then but there was also the memorable arrival of CRAIG CHARLES when he first appeared in the series...Driving his car with THE VALENTINOS playing full blast on the stereo if I remember correctly? I used to work with a Film Director whose Brother was the series Producer for Corrie for a long time...possibly still is, I have not looked lately, but they were passionately interested in all things 70s Youth Culture so it did not surprise me when Northern started to pop up in the Street!

New / recently released tunes that I remember hearing at the Casino include:

Cameo - Find my way

James Wells - Baby I'm still the same man

Creative Source - Don't be afraid to take my love

Johnny Williams - You're something kinda mellow

Clifford Curry - Body shop

Esther Phillips - What a difference a day makes

Andrer Maurice - You're the cream of the crop

I'm there are loads more, but my memory's not what it used to be!

I presume this is yerself Mr Sargeant - being pedantic (since it seems to be the way on here) - MJ also relesed on Cotillion, Atco, Atlantic, Ichiban etc - we've got pretty much all her albums - she's the D'sBs. BTW isn't Medicine Bend UK yellow Stax only on 7"?

Hope you're fine and dandy - heard you were coming to Radcliffe - no show though.

All the best

Reprobate ? I resemble that remark Mr Jones laugh.gif

As for my veering off the subject , I defend my right to do so , claiming immunity under section 52 , paragraph 12 , of the Old Lads Constitution of 1972 , to quote the name of HS whenever it is deemed fit and proper to do so .......

" DD " was released as the B side of " Big Country " , on RCA 2197 in the April of 1972 .

It certainly was played in the summer of 1972 at HS , so therefore it falls into the " new release " category .

This thread reminds of the Great Disco Debate aka "Disco: why is it a dirty word" ages ago.

Bearing in mind this is only from two years, here's what I posted during the row discussion:

Now this is interesting. This website has a list of disco songs from 1976. I've pasted all the ones that I remember hearing at soul nights or allnighters at the time and I have to say I'm pretty amazed! I haven't included disco tunes that I liked and bought at the time or that I just remember, only the ones I heard played out at soul venues. Maybe you could add more to the list?

I think there are a few errors in the list however, and I've commented on those I'm not sure about.

Here's the site

https://www.discosavvy.com

and here's the list - haven't even checked the years either side yet!

Alvin Cash - "Ali Shuffle"

Aquarian Dream - "East 6th Street"

Aquarian Dream - "Phoenix"

BebuSilvetti - "Spring Rain" - reached #39 Pop in the USA in March 1977;theme song to the television game show "The Love Experts" with BillCullen (Didn't know that!)

Benny Troy a.k.a. Benny Mardones - "I Wanna Give You Tomorrow"

Black Soul - "Black Brothers" - electro-disco (could be Black Soul by Black Soul maybe?)

Blood Hollins - "Don't Give It Up"

Brass Construction - "Ha Cha Cha (Funktion)"

The Brothers - "Were You Ready For That" ( Are you ready For This maybe?)

Candi Staton - "Young Hearts Run Free"

Carl Davis and the Chi-Sound Orchestra - "Windy City Theme"

Claudja Barry - "Sweet Dynamite"

Cleveland Eaton - "Bama Boogie Woogie"

Cloud One - "Atmosphere Strutt"

D.C. LaRue - "Cathedrals"

Double Exposure - "My Love is Free"

Double Exposure - "Ten Percent"

Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band - "Cherchez la Femme"

Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band - "I'll Play the Fool"

Evelyn Thomas - "Doomsday" (!)

Family Affair - "Love Hustle"

Five Special - "The More I Get To Know You"

Gentlemen and their Lady (featuring Danny Mitchell) - "...Like Her!"

Jean Carn - "If You Wanna Go Back"

Juggy Murray Jones - "Inside America"

Larry Page Orchestra - "Erotic Soul"

Magic Disco Machine a.k.a. Motown Magic Disco Machine - "Back to Bach" (what on earth...? not Control tower then?)

Millie Jackson - "House for Sale"

Miroslav Vitous - "New York City"

The Moments - "Nine Times (Disco Version)"

The Originals - "Down to Love Town"

Rare Pleasure - "Let Me Down Easy"

The Rimshots - "Do What You Feel"

Roberta Kelly - "Trouble Maker"

Rose Royce - "Car Wash"

Tavares - "Don't Take Away the Music"

Tavares - "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel"

The Temprees - "I Found Love on a Disco Floor"

Thelma Houston - "Don't Leave Me This Way

Tyrone Ashley - "Feet Start Moving"(!)

Vicki Sue Robinson - "Turn the Beat Around"

Walter Murphy - "A Fifth of Beethoven"

Walter Murphy - "California Strut"

We sure played a lot of disco in Northern Soul clubs back in the day

Godz

Here's the 1975 list from that site - same boundaries as last time:

5000 Volts a.k.a. Airbus - "I'm on Fire"

Andr Gagnon - "Wow"

The Armada Orchestra - "Cochise"

The Armada Orchestra - "Do Me Right"

Biddu Orchestra - "Exodus"

The Boogie Man Orchestra featuring Mel Hayes - "(Theme From) Lady, Lady, Lady (Are You Crazy for Me?)"

Brass Construction - "Changin'"

Carl Bean a.k.a. Valentino - "I Was Born This Way"

Crown Heights Affair - "Dreaming a Dream (Goes Dancing)" - reached #43 Pop in the USA

Crown Heights Affair - "Every Beat of My Heart"

Dionne Warwick - "Take It From Me"

The Duprees - "Delicious"

Ernie Bush - "Breakaway

Esther Phillips - "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes"

The Glitter Band - "Makes You Blind"

Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes - "Don't Leave Me This Way

MFSB - "Sexy"

Maxine Nightingale - "Right Back to Where We Started From"

Miami - "Kill that Roach"

Mike and Bill - "Somebody's Gotta Go (Sho Ain't Me)"

The Miracles - "Love Machine"

Moment of Truth - "Helplessly"

The O'Jays - "I Love Music"

Retta Young - "(Sending Out An) S.O.S."

South Shore Commission - "We're on the Right Track"

Tavares - "It Only Takes A Minute"

The Trammps - "Hold Back the Night"

Plenty of familar stuff there too. And this disco site omits records it classes as funk rather than disco, so no George Benson (Supership),Peoples Choice (Do it Anyway... or Jam Jam Jam), Brick (Dazz, Dusic) Sister Sledge (Love Don't You Go Through No Changes...) Kool and the Gang (Open Sesame) all of which got spins in soul clubs. Not saying all these are great records but if you were about at the time it makes you think doesn't it?

Godz

If anyone's interested in the whole thread you'll find it - I should warn you it gets a bit heated. A disco inferno?
