Had a great time despite the three hour one hour train journey thereby missing my first spot. No, it wasn't me under a train at Leighton Buzzard, that's how mine got delayed.

I can remember playing

Martha Starr Sweet Temptation

Little Willie John Home At Last

Jackie Day Get To Steppin'

Paramount Four Sorry Ain't The Word

Jesse Davis Inst

Gene & Gary Baby Without You

Lilly Fields Changes (going down very well now)

Like One Alt take

Lorraine Chandler You Only Live Twice

Nancy Wilcox Gambler's Blues

And some more that I'll remember later.

Ta to Ken for the kab and konversation, Dean and Phil for the lift from the station and to Sian for getting me up there.

Belated nod to Kirsty, Theresa and Denise as with a dodgy mike and my cak-handed introductions they probably don't know I gave 'em a shout on the mike.

Just chilling in my crib after a spectacular Rugby - what a great night of top tunes, belly laughs, risque comments and sticky rings ohmy.gif

The magnificent seven from South London & Brighton arrived in the Price family bus at 8.45 to a Benn Hall that was already filling fast and the atmosphere was absolutely buzzing. Almost every member of the SSLAAS was in attendance - I made it over 20 of us ladies & ladyboys from our girly thread up in our corner, plus the lovely Irish crew.

I finally got to meet the fab Webbydublin IN REAL LIFE, not to mention SuzanneK, KevH, Martin RBMan, Jo65, Olof, Willie Soulgrit, Phil Shields and lots of other friendly soul sourcers of new and renewed acquaintance. An absolute pleasure guys. Kirsty (of 34E fame) you were an absolute hoot - we mustn't leave it so long next time, I've missed you you ginger tart.

Thanks to top crumpet Adam & Molly for submitting to my demands and playing a 90 minute modern set just made up of my advance requests laugh.gif There's nothing quite so pleasant as hearing 'The first one goes out to Theresa', followed by '..and this next one is also for Theresa, as is the next one and the next one...' Tunes so spankingly good I couldn't sit down including my fave Bettye Lavette.

Great to see Crozzer playing Rugby even if his mic announcements were distinctly amateur, lol. Also loved your spot Ken. Thought you were joking when you said what you were going to play, but you were straight up. Only you could get away with cheesy 80s scooter rally tracks like Curtis to start your set and not only pull it off, but have absolutely everyone dancing Ken. Award for most attractive DJ as voted by my husband was won by Di Crosby, hands down. Makes a change to see a lovely manicure working those decks.

Special shouts out to the lovely Kevnewry, Alex McFarlane, Melvin, Andy Dawes (he's a baby, he's a baby), John from St Ives & Kev from Coventry who were all on the floor from start to finish - we do love a man with stamina yes.gif Not to mention your strong sinewy forearms Dr Pickles, I was quite distracted tongue.gif

Quote of the night - from Del, while she was having a photo taken of her rather magnificent pale blue bra in the ladies: "Just get the tits in shot, and not my face, then no-one will know who it is!". You been rumbled girlfriend! Oops I've given the game away good & proper now ph34r.gif

Thanks to Sian & Dean for their usual faultless hospitality and organisation, thanks to Tabs for my coffee fix, Del for my cinder toffee, Webby for my bag of Irish treats, Kev & Andy D for the most excellent CDs and Mark (Jaxon) for the amazing rings to suck. I may need to get a bigger car to take all my booty home in future.

Quite simply the friendliest quality niter in the country, in the best venue, with the most sweets, and the tastiest crumpet. What more could a girl ask for?

Ow my feet hurt.

And my face hurts from laughing so much  But the rest of me is still truly fabulous whistling

Really, really enjoyed Rugby last night, and so pleased that I made the effort and several arduous train journeys to get there

Can't remember any of the tunes played, didn't make it into the side room (again) and seemed to spend a lot of time talking vinyl, making new friends and catching up with people that I hardly ever see these days - and some of whom I haven't seen since I was tamed and made to have babies! Had a good old dance and a sing-a-long-your-own-words-athon . Might have clapped a bit too

Got frotted by Sians Dad (twice) my hands haven't stopped shaking since... I'm not lost for words very often - and I was well and truely silenced  I wonder if I'll be able to sue for PTSD

Oh and Tee, shall we wrestle for him... we could charge an entrance fee :wicked:

Thanks to Bearsy & Maria for the lift to my 1st Rugby Niter, really enjoyed it, it was great to put some faces to names, great atmosphere and as most say, very friendly, will definitely go again, liked the idea of the freebasing room, for me some of the music in there was pure quality, the only downside for me[still didn't spoil it for me though ], was some of the music in the main room was a bit on the safe side, more suitable for a soul nite than a niter, but saying that, there were some quality lesser played tracks played later in the nite, with a good dance floor response, see you all soonthumbsup.gif

oh and one of the best stories of the night was the one of a nameless man that had to go to A&E after he superglued his finger to a record while trying to repair a crack...

Just in case peeps are wondering - 'cos I'm known to have the 'odd' cracked record (or three..) amongst my little vinyl ditties - it DEFO wasn't me.. !! huh.gifno.gifno.gif

Just like to say many thanks to steve n sharon for taking di, and thanks to all for looking after her, sorry i couldn`t make it, thanks for the sweeties del:thumbup:

As they were leaving, I had visions of you heading down the other side of the motorway...

Right back to business.

I'd got a good, good feeling about last nite and it was soooooooo nice to be proved right...

Numbers were brilliant and I even got Margie to get a pic of the full floor when the lights came on.

Apologies for the speakers farting and to Ady for the mic problem.

I tried to get my sound engineer up to the venue to hear the noise first hand but even better than that, we had one on site who has gone thru exactly what the problem is and hopefully (never say never), the problem will be well and truely sorted.

If I seemed a little stressed out early doors, it was the fact that all you people chose to come and party with us and the most important part of the evening (the music), was not perfect. So, I'm sorry to anyone who found it a little irritating.

But once I'd chilled, I had a bloody great nite but then I wouldn't do it if I didn't....

See you all again on 14th Nov hopefully...

I spent most of this great night of Soul Music entertainment keeping my sales boxes company, in the bar/lounge area, whilst I attempted to ply my wares.. When I finally packed them, away Ady was already half way through his excellent offerings, But – instead of ensconcing myself within the confines of the Main Hall – I ended up spending most of the time that was left (of this latest offering of Top Notch music & Top Class sociability at the Benn Hall) in the Freebasing Room. Right up until the lights came on to signal that the 5am finish was, regrettably, upon us. My attendance in this room being broken only by my (fairly regular) ventures outside.. To partake in my required inhalation of 'own rolled' smokes whilst also indulging in light-hearted claptrap pleasantries with the constant flow of Soulie peeps that turned 'the outside area' (immediately in front of the entrance doors and to the sides) as a sort of, 'extension' to the 'Niter – a kind of 'venue within a venue' type thing – where the average 'attendance' was at least, predominantly, around the 20 mark throughout.. With extra 'company' provided courtesy of the 'Snack wagon', parked out front, that offered hot food, tea's/coffee's etc. for most of the night's festivities.

Reason for the majority of my 'music' time being spent in the alternate room was simple.. DJ DIVA DI !! I (obviously) missed her first set due to my 'retail sales commitments' (gutted, too, reading the spins I missed !!) but, after taking a loo-break - just as DI was about to commence her Turntable Management duties – I walked back in the room to find at least DOUBLE the amount of interested Soulies than had been present when I headed off to the latrine. Not a reflection on the DJ prior to this Lady's set.. More a reflection of just HOW good a job DI actually did !! I didn't speak to, or hear, anyone - that witnessed this hour of musical delights - that had anything but praise for DI 's set. I had to agree with them entirely !! Quite a few of her offerings were 'up my personal street' anyway.. But aside from that fact the quality of her selections – coupled with how she 'slung them together' - demonstrated not just an ear for a 'good tune' but also that enviable quality of successfully achieving those very important elements of continuation & fluidity, which she managed effortlessly. In a word.. 'SUPERB' !! I'll be paying future close attention to any gigs where I see this Lady of Soul on the DJ line-up. With any such promotion being automatically included on my list of options for that particular weekend.

What little I did catch of the DJ that preceded Di also 'rocked my personal boat' as this guy – 'Tom H'. - was offering some brilliant 'cover' versions of some well established 'standards'. Having a personal penchant for alternate versions of things myself I just stood at the rear of the room - full of quiet jealousy that I didn't have the things he was playing whilst, at the same time - 'pleased' for the guy.. For owning them. Respect was unequivocally automatic and, as with Di, I would welcome the opportunity to hear – uninterrupted - a 'full' set.

I also caught most of the Freebasing room's last hour of offerings.. Courtesy of yet another DJ that 'did the biz' on the night.. (and who's name has completely gone from my mind as I write this !! My humble apologies). Again I was treated to an abundance of tunes that titillated my Soul tonsils and appealed, greatly, to my liking for 'early soul'. With some excellent N.York produced things played - early 60's N.Y. soul being my fave of faves !!

Suffice to say, and other than 30 mins of Ady and a few of Mr Shields plays, I didn't clock too much of the action in the Main Hall.. But I did overhear two or three people commenting as to how much they enjoyed Ken's set so, 'Well Done' !! that man.

Considering the place was still heaving 10 mins after the last play of the evening - on this occasion Jimmy Wallace's Alpha 45 of 'I'll be Back' - usually, the end of a Benn Hall Session of Soul is signalled by Mr Rimmers' playing of (what has now become the 'signature ender' record at Benn Hall 'Niter's) the superb Big Apple sound of 'The Drifter'.. But, Dave being Dave, he managed to squeeze an extra 45 in to assist the departing attendees.. As they made their way out of the venue & on with their homeward-bound journeys.

In keeping with the extended hospitality ALWAYS offered by, and courtesy of, the Rugby Soul Club promotion duo of Sian & Dean.. Another 'extension' to the 'niter could be found back at their house - where refreshments flow in abundance.. As do the varied selections of (hot !!) nibbles and confectionery - and where extra hours of good company rounds the 'night' off in 'PERFECT' fashion.

Only one 'down side', for me personally (and nothing to do with the promotion..). Despite, even, receiving assurances via e-mail mid-week.. I was let down YET AGAIN !! A debt owed for records taken (and overdue) that was to be satisfied this evening. Guess what ?? 'NO SHOW' !! Bad enough in itself, but (again) - and not through my own doingI'VE been placed in a position where I am now letting someone else down on the back of it - a fact that the purchaser was completely aware of !!

[I will, shortly, be starting an extension to this subject.. Under the heading of 'Dilemma' - I'll start it as a thread, proper, in the 'About Soul' Forum and will post a link here when done. It will also feature as part of my next Blog, with an additional link to the main posting. Subject to what happens the following few days after, I will - if necessary - be updating the thread with NAMES of those causing me severe grief]

Other than that.. A 'Top Night', with masses of the friendliest bunch of Soul Music loving attendees you could ever wish for at a 'Niter. good.gif

NOW - The countdown for next Saturday's United Sound Of Soul begins.. smile.gif

BRING IT ON !! yes.gifyes.gifyes.gif

Oops wasn't I supposed to say Sian????? I remember now, we were going to say it was a technical problem that a techniction is going to rectify.......................:yes::g:

Well I've been a busy bee..............supervised the debating society at the Rugby Soul Club House..............

Cleaned the kitchen, educated the unasleep partyers in the appreciation of Corrie and X-Factor :lol:

Then transported the Irish ex-pats (they're here more than at home these days) to the train station..................and made sure they didn't get back off the train before their next parole date of Nov 14th for their school trip to the pub by canal...................again:D

Just realised I've now been awake since 8 am saturday...................actually shaking from having drunk sooooooooo much Diet Cola:huh:

Really should get in the bath then try to sleep, but then the weekend would be over:( and it'll be back to work in the morning:ohmy::lol::sleep3::sleep3:

Wow what a really wonderful nighter is Rugby. Was wonderful to finally meet a load of fellow Soul Sourcers, particularly SSLAAS members, Del, Theresa and her lovely hubby Justin, Catriona, Liane, Kylee and Simsy, Denise, Bearsy and Marie, Kev, Olof and Joanne and finally Phil (Webbydublin - the Scouser  . Thank you Sian and Dean for accommodating us at your house and for the chips. Was also lovely to see Kirsty, the lovely Tabs, Richard Bayley, Colin Wood and Shirl, Sharon O'Donnell and Steve, Di, Malc Brewin, Dale. Oh and thanks to my travelling companions Jo Brock (with the magnetic bra  ) and Carole and our escort and driver for the night Phil Shields. Thanks to our Ken for a lift to the Benn Hall. It was an absolute crease from start to finish. Thanks Mark (Jaxon) for my sticky ring, I had lots of pleasure sucking and licking it whistling

The majority of the night I spent in the Freestyle room where the music was second to none. Really enjoyed the sounds in there, with an excellent mixture of tunes. Thanks Di for playing the Persians "When You Said Lets Get Married" for me.

What I managed to hear in the main room was also superb. In short I never heard a bad record the whole night. I will be back. Right am going back to bed for some more sleep as I look like one of the undead and probably smelled like it too when I returned from the nighter

Have had a shower now so am fine. :D

Richard Bayley for the entertaining stories

I take it I was talking absolute drivel againlaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.gif ..... wonderful way to spend my birthday, and a big thank you to Dale for the lift home. Highlight of the night for me was Ady's spot in the main room (loved the OC Tolbert "You Got Me Turned Aroundyes.gif ), just a bit gutted I missed so many great records in the Freestyle Room, judging from the playlistssad.gif .

Finally, thanks to Sian & Dean for the welcome and refusing my cash!

A bit late in posting(normaly do this with immediate effect)hectic lifestyle and all that thing.

Well Rugby did it again, thanks must go to team Dean,Sain plus all the others, including the doorstaff.

This place is such a friendly place to be,i seem to spend more time chatting to people than i do listening to the music, cos its thats sort of place.

The freestyle room is where i tried to base myself,i promised Jock / Steve id give em ear in preperation for their Groovesville debut.......and guess what they were very very good btw lads your deffo booked in promise.

In saying that ALL the DJs in the freestyle room were on top form...i enjoyed it.

the main room is a sight to behold for anyone, full of dancers all night long, they dont come better than this, even when the lights came on at gone past 06.00 am they were still there, thats a good sign in its self.

Nice to see Ady Croasdell at Rugby,he did a grand job as well.

del your a star you are never forgetting the sweeties,It was great to catch up with Kirsty who i had not seen for ages still looking good girl,as with all the other gals in Saturday night,i must say i think that "T"s gang of lovely ladies are bonkers to say the least,oh but what fun they are....keep it going girls..

Far far too many people to name check but all great peeps your are,but thanks Colin & Shirley Wood for looking out for Sarah for me when i aint ooooppp north.

Well thankyou Rugby....i luved every minute of it.....thankyou..see ya all in November

The following is from Moldie...

id been looking fwd to this nite for ages as the first time they asked me i was already booked elsewhere...well unsure of how long the journey would take i set off early and founf myself outside the venue at 6.30

i headed off to the pub for something to eat and bumped in to dave rimmer and party who were tucking in..i was asked to join them but as i was hungry i declined as id have been dribbling over there dinner....after filling my face with an excellent meal i went back to the venue and reciecved a real nice welcome from sian and various others..nice...

as it was still early i had a play on the decks in the freestyle room

the first two djs were great..playing a nice selection of rnb style tunes...by the end of there set i had 7 marked down...nice to meet you both jock and steve....

next up was tom h who once again played a real nice mix of tunes and had me looking over his shoulder

diva di was up next and she was very good to..we had chatted before on soul source and fb but had never met

now i had never heard any of the djs before so i was unsure wether the tunes they played were there usual style or were played just for the night

i took over at midnite and had been asked for a few tunes so i duly played them....people were dancing most of my set but this wasnt what this room was all about

everyone duly took there turn with there second sets and the music was superb from them all.....it was left to me to end the night so i thought id play some tunes to get ppl up.....

thanks for all the nice comments

i never ventured into the main room save for 5/10 minutes but everyone seemed to be having a great time

i highly recommend this event..nice venue, ppl and an up for it crowd
