Grade 2 listed Soulies

Billy Whiz

I was going to add this to people with soul; by all means Mods move this if it's better suited there?

I want to nominate Billy Whiz for the title of "Northern soul's Listed People"

Billy is omnipresent on the scene, he is a living icon of Wigan Casino yet he is a down to earth good guy who is polite and genuine.

He is a great ambassador for the nighter scene and I just want to give him a thumbs up on here, Soul Source, a site that I know he loves and reads.

Billy, you are now officially "listed"

At the risk of adding to the museum-piece picture (the reality of Billy Whiz is rather more dynamic and youthful), I'll second that.

He has a quiet, modest presence on here and doesn't get involved in the argy bargy, far more sensible than many of us.

He's normally there before me and after me at many of the nighters I go to, his balletic spins and smooth moves an axis around which the various venues move.

He represents for me the passion and sincerity of many of the die-hard veterans I see on the local scene and its kind of reassuring to see him there at the frontier every weekend.

No doubt there are others (including yourself ImberBoy) whose presence and longevity deserve recognition, but there's definitely something about Billy's humble dedication that is special.

Faith keeper number one?

I would like to add the following elder* stalwarts of the nighter scene as listed soulies:

Christine.

I don't know her second name, but she is normally there in the centre, jabbing her finger to the lyrics, slowly turning, hand on waist, almost flamenco-influenced, a very graceful dancer.

Sam Moore, who has taken quite a few under his wing, and deserves listing because of his dedication to providing us with places to go at the weekend so we don't cause trouble, for his renowned avuncular warmth and because its his birthday this week.

*young at heart, and far more energy than me

I'd just like to put in a word for Willie - Soulgrit - a guy who is an original "Wheelite", still putting in the miles every weekend from Carlisle, with impeccable taste in venues (well, he's at every night I ever go tolaugh.gif ), topped off by being one of the most friendly and approachable people you could ever wish to meetyes.gif .

Sod Grade II listing - Willie for the 4th plinth in Trafalgar Square!

thankyou Imberboy for this threadthumbup.gif ,

Billy Whizz deserves all the praise he gets - and he doesnt get nearly as much as he should in my opinion.

it was Mr Whizz who took me to my first proper nighter a few years ago - it was Middleton and it blew my mind!

he then took me out to different nighters nearly every weekend for the next 2 years laugh.gif

he has a pure love and enjoyment for the music and the dancing which really inspired me, and still does. i dont know where he gets his energy from, i can only hope i have half his energy when i'm his age (36shhh.gif ).

he never gets involved in the crappy gossip and bitching which unfortunately goes on sometimes. he has never told me what to do, who to like, who not to like, or what style of soul music i should like. Billy and Karen, who also deserves a big mention on this thread, have introduced me to some wonderful people on the soul scene and i miss our long car journeys very much thumbsup.gif

First met Billy in Blackpool last year, so I haven't known him that long - and i have to confess, that on first impression, I thought he was a little odd (sorry). g.gifohmy.gif

But, over the months I've got to know him quite well I think, and I must admit that now, he's most definitely one of my favourite people. Such a lovely, lovely guy, with an extremely tongue.gif 'wicked'tongue.gif sense of humour.

He is, without doubt, in the top 5 of my favourite soul people. yes.gif

Billy Whizz ~ the epitome of Northern Soul ~ a nighter isn't the same without you mate.

Err Imberboy ~ just wondering why Billy's a grade II and not a grade I ~ after all, wouldn't you say Billy's of exceptional interest...? biggrin.gif

Billy ( Tony ) ths is your time for recognition and rightly so.

No body consciously keeps count of the number of nighters they attend as a "soul fan punter". I am trying to have a ruff guess but it covers too many years.

Billy given you live in Norfolk and drive thousands of miles each year for the various nighters with out any political bias is quite something. As Helen mentioned earlier , the journeys and the banter are something to treasure.

Lets hope there are alot more years to come .

It is easy to be critical of other people when you don't really know them.

Try to keep the fuel bills low in the car journeys and leave me some room on the dance floor.

All the best Tony, i mean Billy .!!!

regards Frank

p.s. Hats off to Karen and Chang you deserve to be noted too

Can any one remember the Northernsoul version?

"Hand clappin, friend makin, ??????
