Just like to say my usual thanks to everyone who came down to the last one, especially our guest DJ, journalist Gary Crossing and to my mate Terry who did a stirling job on the door. :sleep3:

In case you have difficulty reading the date info for our next night it is indeed on Saturday JULY 30th.

Usula place, usual time, usual good night out.

SATURDAY JULY 3OTH - WALLS OF HEARTACHE, WALTHAMSTOW

Link to comment

So why aren't you doing a 'walls' night in August?

Part-timers if you ask me. Not that you do...

Looking forward to July 30th - what new visuals do you have for us this month and will DJ Dave be giving away more prizes again from his 'bag of splendour'.

I may well pop along to the poerty 'do' tonight in E11 so see you guys there - bit of culture etc. before Big Brother

Eddie - currently preparing for tonight with my usual lying in a darkened room with a wet towell over my head - so will have to answer your questions next week.

Hope you are there tonight but as you know I am unable to chat whilst I am 'working'

Chaps

I made it along to the poerty/soul do that you guested at last week - very good too.

One question though. Was that notebook that the poet Dave Lyall was reading from, an original copy or a reissue? It looked suspiciously new to me and this is just the sort of thing that is killing off the 'rare poerty' scene these days.

Looking forward to my WOH fix on Sat 3oth.

Eddie

Eddie I was there too and very disappointed at the very evident lack of pipes and roll-necked jumpers!

However once or twice I did see members of the 'rare poetry' crowd actually tapping thier toes (I think it was to Take a Letter Maria).

All joking aside, a very interesting night.

Sorry to have missed the last one...can't wait for July 30th. Expecting to hear plenty more cool vinyl this time! Hey - how about some Nella Dodds? Or maybe some Bobby Goldsboro. Or some Jay & The Americans...or...oh, whatever.

Just don't miss it.

As ever - Dave and I are always open to requests in the weeks running up to Walls Of Heartache.

We'll look through our m,assive archives and see if we can oblige. I know Dave has recently become a bit of a Nella fan.

Eddie - the reason we are not doing a night in August is that as it's the big Bank Holiday we felt it was a good time to get reaquainted with our children, so we're taking them to the seaside.

It just happens to be the IOW and the Hipshaker 3 dayer, but that's surely a coincidence.

See you all on July 30th

Eddie and Ron - glad you both enjoyed the poetry 'do'

Eddie I think Andy has answered for me as well on the August issue as our families are holidaying together (I was extremely shocked to find our holiday clashed with the weekender).

And yes we will be having the members prize draw again next Saturday - anyone new can join for free on the night and go into the draw (we are trying to think of ideas to jazz the draw up a bit - perhaps some sort of competition - all ideas welcome)

Ron - I'm in a bit of a rush tonight so will post up a playlist over the weekend.

Thanks again guys,

Dave

Just like to remind everyone that our guest DJ on Saturday is another local boy, Tim Fuller (TimtheMod).

Tim usually DJ's for the Gene Drayton Unit and can often be found among the punters at Shake in Bethnal Green.

Tim guested for us in May and we are hoping for another good set from him.

Dave

Glad to see Tim The Mod back this weekend!

Great set last time - looking forward to my monthly fix boys. Have some mates coming from overseas for this one so make it a goodun.

Will do our best Eddie - did you see the diskography of your namesake elsehere on the site?

Remember we are both open to requests if anyone wants anything particular played on the night (if we have it)

Dave

Yes indeed.

I've only ever heard one Eddie Bo track played at Walls Of Heartache. I think Andy played Hook & Sling way back in Feb. Too funky for ya?

He did some great soul stuff too you know - you should check him out

That would have been Andy - he was only playing me some Eddie Bo at home the other day, so I suspect it may be on the agenda.

How about some big screen footage featuring a scooter or two to coincide with Tim's guest spot?

Just a thought. Brrrrmmmmmmmm

Sorry Eddie but I liked the shots of the dancers from Wigan Casino played last month, which gets my vote for a play.

A big thank you to everyone who came to Walls Of Heartache last night. I think it was one of the best nights we've had - perfect numbers (just over 100), enough room to dance and a great set by our guest Tim The Mod.

Special thanks to the Soul Sourcers who came along for the first time and danced their socks off. You know who you are.

We're back in September (no nite in Aug due to bank Holiday) .

Thanks again - what a great night and we hope you all enjoyed it too - you looked like you did.

Phew - what a great night on Saturday. My ankle ached all day yesterday (old football injury).

My mates and I had a brilliant night so thanks all round - DJs, dancers, bar staff, my parents....oh you get the idea.

See you in September, slackers

I also had an excellent time, one of the best Walls of Hearache's I have been to.

I thought the guest DJ was a good choice this month.

Well done, see you in September.

Hi Folks

Me and Jane (the missus) had a great time, although we had to leave at 12.30 to relieve our babysitter. I really enjoyed DJing again, it's a challenge to get people dancing, but people were well warmed up for Andy's spot. Plenty of club soul and I even managed to play Bobby Bland's 36-28-36, and a Doris Troy request.

Roll on September.

As Andy said - thanks to everyone who came along on Saturday who helped to make it a blinding night.

Special thanks to Tim our guest who played a top set (i especially enjoyed the Monitors) and got the crowd warmed up nicely.

My personal low was only having half the dancefloor full for Nella Dodds Finders Keepers, which I thought was a surefire winner and my highpoint (apart from dancing with my wife to Rita and the Tiaras Gone with the Wind), was taking a chance on Cashing In (bit off our normal plays) and packing the dancefloor. Full credit to our crowd.

Once again thanks to everyone who made it a great night and looking forward to seeing you again on September 24th.

Dave, I didn't play the Monitors!!

Apologies Tim - my careful preparation of Strongbow and Tequila usually gives me total clarity of the nights events the following morning, but it appears to have somehow let me down this time.

Still the Monitors track I heard in my head at some point in the night was cracking!

All joking aside you did play some excellent tunes for us and we are suitably grateful for the contribution.

I should mention it was good also to have young lads in thier twenties in on the night (not Mods either), in Motown tee-shirts and asking for records to be played.

Hi Andy Dave & Tim

Just want to say thanks for a good night! (I'm obviously talking about 'Walls of Heartache' last Saturday... !!)

We didn't know anyone there at all but had a good time because the atmosphere was so friendly and easy going, and the music although well known and accessible was also good quality (and for the record, played off 7" singles, in case it matters!).

The do was so well attended especially considering it was not 'within the Circle line' that I left wondering if the London 'soul scene' might be starting to miss the point somewhat.. the real 'scene' (if there must be such a thing.. read on) is out here in the suburbs! Here we were at a local do where we didn't know anyone, having been into soul 40+ years between us, and I have to admit we enjoyed ourselves more than at any of the 'London rare soul scene' do's we have been to in the last couple of months. It made a refreshing change NOT to recognise anyone.

An eclectic crowd- I doubt if they all knew each other- but they all came to listen and enjoy soul music.. now what does that mean?

Could it mean that whether our cliquey little 'scene' is around or not, people will STILL love soul music, without having to be part of any defined 'user group' or 'subculture'? With popular and rare soul music popularity gathering momentum and CD sections rapidly expanding in mainstream record shops, we could find our rare soul do's in London especially becoming simply irrelevant, if we make them too inaccessible music-policy wise for newer listeners.

Looking forward to the 100 club this Sat for something completely different again, although after 16 years it does feel a bit like visiting my front room, or a familiar pair of slippers. I love it.

Catfish - wow, many thanks for your endoresment and sentiments.

At Walls Of Heartache we simply aim to give people a good night out with lots of classic soul that they can dance to in a friendly and non 'rarer than thou' atmosphere.

We know that to some that will prove unadventurous, but there are plenty of nights around for those who like that sort of thing. We like a party out here in the 'burbs' and hope you can join us again in Sep or beyond.

Thanks again - thrilled to read your post and I suspect you were the amazing twirling dancer.

Thanks for the shout Catfish - it was a good night indeed and a pleasure to meet you and your husband.

See you at the next one hopefully (September 24th), although we might have something up our sleeves before then, but not sure yet.

Thanks again,

Dave
