The Tempest

Recommended Posts

Hi Chalky

Our Trev's at a very funny age, you know kinda forgetful except when it comes to whose's round!

I think he means:

Roy Wright You Changed My Whole Life Around On Vick Records

Dave W

Hi Dave

Think I'm at same age as Trev  forgot about the Roy Wright, could only remember Charles Farren.

I tend to remember his storming tunes like this one, but he also had an ear for some of the slower stuff, and despite it rarely being played anywhere, probably because its a cheapie, but

June Conquest - Almost Persuaded, (Laura Green c/u) always makes me think of Keb.

Am I right or is my mind playing tricks?

Another fast one I cant see mentioned

The Miller Sisters - Your Love (is guaranteed). He uncovered it at an alldayer in Tamworth, after a Stafford niter, and sold it to me for £6.

Miller Sisters, Guy's Vonettes c/u originally

You are right Tony. Perhaps thats why Keb sold it to me laugh.gif

And Chalks, again you are right. Someone even pointed out that guy always used to say - Wait for the beat.

Without a doubt the best records Keb ever played late 80's when he was Djing at The Alexander in Clapham (and the best dancefloor response) were Nothing's too good for my baby-Stevie Wonder & Sweet Darlin' Jimmy 'Soul' Clarke-not saying he didn't play other good tunes mind yer!

Hi,

Keb and Guy were definitely the boys in the mid 80s and turned over an amazing amount of records. One of Stafford's great strengths (and weaknesses!) was that if you missed one week you would probably not know a good proportion of the tunes at the next niter.

Keb's great tunes are too many to mention but like any of the other greats he did spin a few shockers. I don't know if this deserves another thread but The Terrible Tom c/u (my traumatised mind has erased the artist details as a defence mechanism), There She Goes Again (Again, remember it was on Columbia but rest erased) and the Enchantments still give me nightmares!

All best

Ion

PS Jackie Day, Venturas definitely Henigan sounds!

hmm never saw him play in the 80's that i can remember but found my way into madam JOJO's in Soho London about last year on a pub crawl. My mate from Camden rang him to guest list us. he said " Keb,s got a regular night in here and its ace".as i remember it used to be called Kebs deep funk?? we got there bought two 7 quid drinks ( thank god i didnt pay to get in) and he was spinning what can only be described as big band pseudo rockabilly swing. Bloody terrible. now i love old RNB, hard rockabilly and riff lead rock n roll but this was bloody aweful, i can take drums and bass and i can take early house and i'll listen to classic music if im in the right mood but this was bloody awefull, no really bloody awefull.

I have a marvelous tape from '84 Keb made me. Proper, old skool home taping, done on one of those mono tape recorders propped up against the speaker. At various intervals you can hear in the background a whistling kettle, someone knocking on the front door and the toilet flushing! Off the top of my head I can remember:

The Classics - So Glad I Found You

The Limelites - Don't Leave Me Baby

The Empires - You're On Top Girl

The Soul Set - Will You Ever Learn (which he claimed Guy sold to him for all of 6 quid!)

The Young Brothers - What's Your Name

The COD's - She's Fire

and a cracking early 70's dancer covered up as George Hobson - I Have A Girl. Our old mentor from Tranent, the late Neil McKillop, had the only other copy I knew of. Never did find out who it really was.

As Ion mentioned earlier, top man as Keb was he could drop the odd honky howler. Jagged Edge - Baby You Don't Know on RCA, anyone? Or The Enchantments - I'm In Love With Your Daughter?

With you all the way there mate..Keb was all about getting people on the dance floor and provoking reactions, and he did both of those with ease..

I befriended Keb in his very early days (anyone remember him DJing at Peterborough Fleet in the side room some time before Stafford?).

Anyway, a C/U from that time "Open Your Eyes" or something like that - he showed me under the label but was too far gone to take in what it was (Royal Jokers or sommat....). Anyone enlighten me?

Never mind looking under the label, I remember him spinning at one of our do's and my memory is awful but I'm sure his cover ups were made from porn mags !!!

So many records and so many memories! So here goes............

Tami Lynn - Run Away (aka 'You My Love')

Dynamic Three - You Said Yeah (c/u as "She Said Yeah " - The Agents)

Azie Mortimer - You Better Get Away (actually "Run Run" by a Swan group I can't remember)

This was an Ady C (100 Club Spin) unknown girl group at the time on acetate, confirmed as the Persianettes when ady was looking through the Swan tapes and came across it many years later.

Buddy Smith - When You Lose The One You Love

Gordon Keith - Look Ahead (c/u as "Look Ahead" by Maurice Williams)

Ron Baxter - This Is It (c/u as "I'm Leaving You Now" by Vernon Garrett)

Wendell Watts - Kiss A Good Thing Goodbye

Out Of Sights - For The Rest of My Life

Jackie Follett - I Am What I Am (c/u as "I Am What I Am" - Joyce Kennedy)

George Jackson - That Lonely Night (c/u as "You Know You're Hurtin' Me So" - Otis Pollard)

Andy Fisher - A Wee Bit Longer / My Heart's Beating Stronger (both sides covered as Earl Jackson)

The Matadors - Say Yes Baby (c/u as "Say Yes" by The Chavis Brothers)

Ain't Gonna Run - The Royal Esquires (c/u as "Play The Part Of A Fool" - The Embers)

Why - Willie Mason & All the Kings Men (c/u as "I Wanna Know" - Lou Pride)

The Empires - You're On Top Girl (c/u as "You're On Top Girl" by Johnny Cole)

Royal Five - My Baby Cares For Me (c/u as "Open Your Eyes, I'll Be There" - The Fenways)

The Buck Rogers Movement - Take It From Me Girl (c/u as "Take It From Me" - Trade Martin)

The Chaumonts - Now You've Gone (c/u as Roscoe & Friends - can't remember title)

Little Charles & The Sidewinders - It's A Heartache (c/u as "Watch Out For The Heartaches" - Sam Coltrane)

Little John - Just Wait & See (c/u as "I'm The Only One" - Jimmy Raye)

The Jackson Brothers - I've Gotta Hear It From You (c/u as "Somebody Told Me" - Rufus Lumley)

Tony Galla - "In Love" (c/u as "Being In Love With You" - Winfield Parker)

The Strands - The Breeze From The Trees

Soul Set - Will You Ever Learn / Please Don't Make Me Cry

H B Barnum - It Hurts Too Much To Cry (c/u as "It Hurts Too Much To Cry" - George Kennedy)

Jesse Davis - Gonna Hang On In There Girl (c/u as "Hang On In There" - 'James' Vanelli. He actually announced it as James Vanelli, though I think a lot of people still call it the old Johnny Vanelli cover-up)

The Venturas - Heart Of Love

The Springers - Nothing's Too Good For My Baby (c/u as "My Baby" - Ron Banks)

The Ebonies - You Got What I Want (c/u as "Baby You Know It" - The Chandlers)

Bobby Sansom - The Happiest Day of My Life

Can anyone help with a track he was playing around '86 called something like "Help Is On The Way"? Just looking for artist/title/label details, not the record itself!

That'll be Blue Steam on Catamount, a Dave Withers discovery I believe? I had one, can't remember were it went, hope you're well mate.

post-225-12539515484564_thumb.jpg

I take it the Fascinators CU is the Boss four, loads of these sounds~I thought were Butch's as I got into the scene in 86/ 87 when Keb was waining and getting a litle funky on us ( Iused to see him in the Wag club too) bu8t it seems like he had many of these first

The more you know the less you show perhaps?...

OR IS IT THEY CANT BE BOTHERED WITH PEOPLE ON THE FORUM??

Who knows... no.gif
