Goodtimes - Brookfields

Recommended Posts

Well were do we start some real quality tuneage, quality venue, top quality djs, but a poor turnout this can be attributed to many things as we've all seen at so many other venues across the country I'm not going to harp on about the reasons why we have to find out a positive way forward.

I shake my head in frustration and ask local and Midlands people how far would you travel to listen to the like's of Djs we had on at Brookfields last night bloody miles I think. Altough disapointed at the turnout a big thanks go out to all the Djs for the time and effort they put in last night with special thanks to Jumpin Joan for travelling to play for us and to Ted Massey for bringing along some big big tunes.

We at 'Goodtimes' have tried providing the punters with music they want to hear with a truly cross selection of quality soul music so I'm asking all the djs from last night to post a playlist so you can judge the music for yourself, but the big question I ask myself is there a need to change and how do we improve things.

I am not a quitter so we are back again at Brookfields on November 28th and Max and I have talked about a change in music policy for this night after careful consideration and a long chat we have decided to revert to a banging stomping oldies and Motown night on the 28th Nov in order to try to bring back the missing punters at this wonderful venue, it deserves better support the DJs need your support we at 'Goodtimes' need your support (sounds like a Winston Churchill speech eh!) no I'm just trying to be open and honest and get your opinions dont be afraid to post your views.

So more details will follow after we all decide where we go next etc etc.

Oh! and I nearly forgot big thanks to all the guys and girls who did turn out last night to support us you are the backbone of our nights and your continued support is vital to us.

Once again it was a thumbs up for me and Kath and a good chance to dance to a good range of music, through R&B, classic stompers and rare soul. We will continue to support the local scene and hope that others will follow.

Nice to know that you are not going to give up on this venue.

Keep the faith!!

Gaz, attended brookfields earlier this year, one of my mates was guesting,on handing over to the next dj (a big name) he remarked what the crowd were responding to on the floor.the reply was "i'll play what i want"

On another night at prime time i watched another dj play 3 records to an empty dance floor, i find that unacceptable.

The old J11 after an article written by Ant on the old j11 website changed it,s music policy to up tempo stomping oldies, the result was locked doors at 9.30 with queues waiting to get in.

The problem with an across the board music policy is in my opinion, you can enjoy your own bag for an hour, then not enjoy the next two hours.

Goodyears has stood the test of time because it does exactly what it says on the can,

Lifeline is successful for the same reason.

Essington started off a success then the music policy changed adding rare and underplayed with a bit of modern and lost it,s way.

May be themed nights of what ever era, or music should be chosen,as in my opinion across the board is a music minefield.

well on a personal point gaz me and shaz couldnt get out last night ,?shit happens ,but reading the replies to your post i must agree ,i personally like to hear all types of soul ,but the midlands scene doesnt seem to like accross the board ,as sed you have to listen to a lot of music you arnt sure about or just dont like at all ?and that can spoil your evening ,.people moan about oldies nights but they bring punters through the doors ,and surelly thats what its all about ,.you guys work tirelessly to put these venues on and well done to one and all ,. oh and i meet lots of people from this area all over the country ,traveling miles to here the music the like ,normally oldies ,.so please keep giving us venues because without you guys we aint got nowhere to go and that would be a pisser ,.please k.t.f ,.c u all soon good.gif

Firstly must thank Joan and Tony for inviting me to join them for the night, and making up the group of 3. biggrin.gif

Really enjoyed your company. thumbup.gif

Musically I thought it was an excellent mix.

And I'm sure the play lists will show that.

Think a lot of venues are suffering with low attendances lately.

Really don't know what the answer is though.

But with over 40 events on last night, and thats just those advertised on SS, its inevitable numbers will be affected.

Despite that there was still a good buzz and I'll willingly travel to listen to quality.

Hi Gaz, firstly i'm quite sure it's not a personal thing..... I'm no expert and haven't been on the scene all my life like some, but IMHO across the board doesn't work, people want to either listen to or dance to the music they love not a broad range of soul....Not only the midlands but most of the country's heart is with Oldies, people want to be took back to the halicean days of their teens. Last night we travelled over 200 miles to an oldies night, next week Kings Hall, the week after it'll be the Wheel (pulling in between 500 and 1000 punters each) and we see many locals at these places, these are the extreemes people go to for Oldies.... I'm sure a local venue playing Oldies would do realy well once the word got round and it got established. But at the end of the day it's you guys who have to choose. There are some local venues who play modern (sorry but coat on time for me) as i'm sure you know and are quite happy to play to 30 to 40 punters but to me if you want atmosphere it comes from playing Oldies which will get punters through the doors....Personally we would gladly attend a local event playing Oldies ( sorry can't make the 28th, Wheel on 27th then staying over to celebrate a big birthday). Anyway good luck mate whichever way you go thumbsup.gif

I know l'll get slated for this comment but l speak my mind, and IMHO, it's diversification that has damaged the soul scene, but that's just my opinion.

im going to have to choose my words carefully as not to start another war of words . but as someone in the middle:good: iv,e noticed that there is a split between people who like oldies ( twisted wheel , wigan etc) and rare or megga rare . both of them for socialising ,or chin stroking . nothing wrong with that but i happen to be in the middle .& in the middle is where max & the stables are . playing a mix of quality oldies , crossover ,r&b ,& a bit of the rare stuff . no different to the old j11 . maybe the stables being the home of lifeline rare nighter has an effect on numbers i dont know ,also clashing venues dont help especialy when some weeks theres nothing on .theres also this politics thing between djs , ... i m one of those few people who have heard enough same old and can,t get my head around this rare scene so brookfields is my perfect night out . but if it has to change policy then so be it .

Don't beat yourselves up over it too much, or over "analise" it. Take my case, for instance. I think it's a great venue, and a superb mixture of music to keep any "Northern Soul" fan happy. The sad reality of why I didn't go was:- Firstly I was D.J.'ing at "The Riverside" in Gloucester (10 Minutes from home), but if I wasn't going there, I would have supported Mick Lloyd at "Hip Hugger" in Weston, if I wasn't going there, I would probably have gone to Burnley, as some mates were going there, and if I wasn 't going there, I'd have had to make the difficult choice between yourselves & Bishopwood. Absolutely NOTHING wrong, or in any way, shape or form with your D.J.'s, music, venue, politics (I ain't got no Axe to grind) but with the absolutely bewildering amount of choice, you were 4th, possibly 5th on my list, and that, genuinely, is no reflection on the quality of event that you put on!!!!!!

Easy:- Choose a weekend, when there's F*** All onwhistling.gif

Well I asked for your honest opinions and I certainly got a mix of them I hope I also speak for Max as we value all the comments and take on board what everyone has to say. You can see from the various replies how difficult it is to please everyones individual tastes, personally I dont think we'll ever do that. The choice out there for the punter as one comment from Des says is wide and varied but the main thing is we try to keep all our venues going be it crossover, modern, oldies, rare etc etc. I ask myself if there were no soul venues to attend what would I do at the weekend probally drink myself stupid (which isn't a bad idea) or stay in and watch the telly I'd probally commit suicide if I had to choose either of these.

Difficult or what lets hope which ever way collectively we decide to go its right for the future of our club and more important for you as paying customers.

Keep the comments coming without these forums where would we able to voice our opinions.

Cheers Gaz

I think Des has got it right, too much on. Did somebody say there were 40+ venues on that nite?

Locally to play a non oldies format you have to avoid dates when Sunflower, Quality Dudley, USOS, Bishops Wood, Lifeline, Rugby, etc are on, and I'm basing this on where I see most w.mids rare soul folk at, on a regular basis.

There's 8 dates per month, plus the extra 2 every 3 months. All venues need to cooperate on dates to avoid the death of all but one or two - and I dont want to only have 2 local venues to go to per month. If you and Bishops Wood had been on different dates I would have gone to both, and so would others, so you both lost out on saturday

Alternatively do a big Oldies Niter, with an early leave refund option ( not just a soul nite, cause there's too many of them) But do it properly, proper dj's playing not just the top 500, but using a little imagination, like Mart Kerby said. No one wants to see any promoter lose money, and the stables is a big venue to fill, so you know you gotta have maybe 150 in to make it look decent.

Glad you asked me to fill in for ken, enjoyed it, esp. Joan, Ted, Phil's plays.

The attendances at the Stables have been declining for most of this year and i think an across the board policy at a place as big as the Stables is never going to work, Bishops wood attendance was down on the last one and there was nobody there that would have gone to the stables if it had not been on. so i think oldies nights are the only way the stables will survive. The next one hopefully will be banging and i will have the oldies box with methumbsup.gif

John firstly dont think a money back option is a starter at Brookfields we already promote an early bird offer of £4.00 before 9 and just £6 after that. Perhaps we should make it a £5 what ever time you turn in and then go when you want, coupled with the night ending at just after 2.00am it does not make it worthwhile to offer money back offer that's ok for nighters etc. People who come to Brookfields stay later than 1.00 on Saturdays so £5 or £6 is great value anyway considering the expence we have to fork out to run this night.

We have asked for a nighter here for ages and that has not been given the go ahead yet and yes the money back option would become available and djs to suit.

Secondly dont want to start a war of words here ref clashing with Bishops Wood, the Stables/Brookfields for the past 4/5 years and longer have been on the last Sat of the month so I'm sorry to say we have no intentions of changing that at the moment.

Anyway glad you enjoyed the night on Sat just proved to me that some of the oldies you played in your set had people up off thier feet dancing in fact everyone who was there was on the floor. I do agree though re your comments about the crossover nights at Brookfields it is made for stomping oldies nights great dance floor superb sound system etc etc .

So as you showed, time for a change me thinks.

Hi boys, can i just have my two-penths worth, I have been saying to Max for a while to change the music policy to a banging oldies night, which seem's to be what the majority want, drop the across the board soul night.

As for clashing i found it strange that Bishops Wood decided to clash on the same night, particularly when there are some Saturday's when there is nothing on atall. But they are not the only one's that have done this, i for one have been to Bishops Wood and have enjoyed the venue and the night and i know to at least 12 ppl who would be at Bishops Wood if it was'nt clashing with Brookefields.

I know we have said it before and it will probably never happen, but it would be nice if promoters could work together. It is going to be interesting next year when NCSC start there regular bi- monthly nighter, i wonder how many promoters will change dates then.?whistling

Well its offical having chatted tonight with Max, Goodtimes at Brookfields will be changing its music policy to playing 'stomping' oldies and classic motown etc as from November 28th.

Watch this space for more information on current guests etc.

I'm sure this will be only for the best for the future survival of Goodtimes and Brookfields and I for one look forward to November greatly bring it onthumbup.gif.
