Dean
Good night out, very very good taste of tunes played throughout the night. Journey up there was an exciting episode. Big Paul had consumed a meat and potato pie (for 4), that his digestive system was struggling to cope with. Steve L in a unexpected bout of polite good manners managed to hold his wind in until Woolley Edge services. The poor female attendant at the services was a little suprised by the brass band impersonation coming from the cubicle though. I did offer the explanation that we were a colliery band on tour and he was tuning his euphonium, I think she mis-heard and thought he was tuning his euphemism, perhaps he was. The room has a good feel from early doors, although most venues that has Mick Donnelly sat in corner has a good feel. The early sets were great mood setters of high standards, the floor started to get steady attention as the night moved on, but I thankfully did not get the feeling that anyone was chasing the floor. Lots of souls wanting to sit and socialise and listen. Johno's spot was a treat, there were a couple that I'd long forgotten about. Good bar too. Lots of happy friendly people. Suprised to bump into a lost memory, "Stig" or is it "Stigga", been a long long time . . . . . . get that breath sorted . Record of the night for me was KevH playing Jimmie Raye, That'll Get It, great dancin' tune. Thought Steve L's second spot (he and Kev shared 30 min spots over 2 hours) was quite brave for a small club room, a much more up-tempo spot, worked well for me. A lesson in how to put a set together from Mick Donnelly. Mick played a spot of great variety and depth. Really enjoyed the variety. As usual delivered with passion and style. Only an hour and half up the M1/M62 for us, definitley be back. Edited October 11, 2009 by Dean Link to comment

(everyone wants at least an extra hour so we have searched and found this alternative venue for a trial run). The management are very enthusiastic and are willing to work with us to provide a welcoming venue for the events. I will be posting details in the Events section in a couple of days, along with local hotel information and directions. Hope you can make it, we do try to play something different at each event and the crowd love it! cheers Paul Link to comment

Ficklefingers
My first - and only - previous visit to Morley Carr was a 'fleeting' one.. Their August '09 date and a 'stop along the way', as it were, on my journey to a 'niter at Droylsden. I'd already had this promotion in my sights for several months prior, knowing I would at some point (when circumstances were 'right') get to experience what appeared - on previous look back threads, at least - to be the type of Soul 'nite that would very much appeal to my preference.. For Soul music offerings that don't 'stand still'& appear seemingly stuck in a time-warp !! 'Progressive' is one description I suppose ?? Prepared to bring something 'fresh' to the (turn) table(s) - happy to 'push a few boundaries'. But all with the one key element of Quality at the core of their ethos. Regardless of genre, too.. Lesser known 60t's; 'Newies'; Solid 'Slab of Soul' rarities; Oldies of distinction - but rarely heard out these days.. That's the sort of gig I prefer to attend and there aren't many that 'Fly the Flag' for 'tomorrow's' Rare Soul scene. Established 'Soul Night' promotions that lead the way, currently (in my opinion, anyway..), number but THREE !?! The Attic, in Mansfield being one.. United Sound Of Soul in the Midlands a second, with Morley Carr the third (not necessarily in any order). Even though that inaugural visit of mine was no more than a couple of hours it was ample enough time for me to decide - emphatically - that future dates for, what IS, Bradford's (Yorkshires ??) PREMIERE 'Rare Soul Music' promotion would no longer see an entry in my Soul Planner made with a pencil. Instead, clearly & boldly marked in ink - as 'Priority' gigs - in my agenda. At the end of Saturday night's 'Up there With the BEST' - of some previous 'Top Night' Saturday sessions of Soulin' I've been fortunate to experience.. I mentioned to Paul that (to me) Morley Carr is the United Sound Of Soul of Yorkshire.. With United Sound Of Soul . itself being the Morley Carr of the Midlands !! Sometimes a Saturday night out, for me, is only one part of a two day weekend spent tarmac treading between my promotions of choice. I quite regularly embark on Friday AND Saturday weekends of Soul indulgence. This weekend was just such a one !! And even more important that neither of the promotions I decide to attend, over the two days, disappoint or let me down in some way.. 'Dampening' my overall experience - even if the promotion the previous night had been 'exceptional' a 'below expectations' experience the next night can detract from the 'Sating of my Soul' I set out to enjoy. After a superb Friday night attending the Soul Night celebrations of Sandi's (& Harpo..) 50th Birthday Bash in Wolverhampton - enjoying some turntable management duties to the bargain - It would've been such a shame if Saturday's Soul Session of choice detracted from my - potentially - 'Stand Out' weekend.. Morley Carr succeeded in contributing to, what will forever be, a momentous weekend !! One that I shall, for some years to come I imagine, happily recall from it's place in the old memory bank - and replay it over in my mind. Attempting to relive some of the wondrous moments that created the joyous emotions experienced by me over these past two days (and a half.. But I'll come to that). After arriving back at my house from my Friday jaunt at 6.30am on the Saturday, I was never going to achieve any proper 'rest/sleep' before I would be having to make ready for departure, later that afternoon, to head north in the direction of Bradford. First, though, was a pre-planned 'pit-stop' in Doncaster. An 'errand' type detour to a fellow Soulie peep's house to attend to some business whilst enjoying some choice hospitality. My planned arrival would've been around 4.30pm (after departing mine at just after 3 o'clock) and would take no more than an hour at the outside. Allowing me ample time to complete the motorway journey to Bradford - via another (planned) 'house visit' to Ray & Denise. A chance to 'chill out' & relax before we all made our way for an early doors entrance at our final destination of the Working Men's Club in Morley Carr . 5.15pm - I'm in the correct part of 'Donny' - where my first 'stop off' lives.. But STILL hadn't received a reply to my text (sent two hours earlier) requesting directions to their house. As I had the address written down I felt I'd be able to find it, myself, soon enough. Finally, at 5.45 (just as I was about to send a text that read only as 'HELP' !!) my hosts must have thought I'd either forgotten - or was lost - and called me to assist in negotiating the final short distance to my destination. At 6.30 my hosts (Wendy & Stigga) decided they would join me in my night out and assist in contributing to the 'great' weekend I was enjoying. I rang Denise quickly - to explain where I was and what was happening- and we agreed it would make more sense to meet at the venue, due to the time fast approaching the scheduled start of the 'Soul Proceedings'. As it happened we made a timely arrival at (I think ??) around the 7.30 mark, and so had not missed too much of the musical delights on offer. For being a reasonable distance - 100 miles(ish) - from the area I live in (Cambs) I could just as well have been calling in to my 'local' as - of the already many numbered attendees - I spent a good 15 minutes indulging in pleasant greetings with so many Soulie peeps I (have come to) know, and see, on a very regular basis (most weekends !!) and that despite the fact that many of them had also traversed umpteen miles of tarmac from many various locations around our fine country to make their appearances.. Even a Scottish contingent having made the very long journey from (the place of my birth..) 'East Fife'. A particular pleasure to finally meet the acquaintance of a 'name' I've known for several years - Charlie Watson.. Discovering during our conflabbing that we share 'common 'friendships with other tartan Soul 'tooners. It's a small world, innit !! Ray & Denise - as expected - were already inside. a PLEASURE to meet Rosemary. Rosemary is the reason why this post is not as colourful as my usual - her request to me being for 'no more than two colours' - to which I agreed I would oblige. The 'Boy's from The Attic'.. Already having laid claim to their 'corner' for the night - with the lad's being part of the guest DJ line-up for this evening. Always a pleasure to have chinwag & giggle with 'Mansfield's Finest' Connoisseurs of Soul - Even though I had seen them only seven days before, on their 'Home Turf'. Chris & Soo Holmes, Johnno (another of the guest Vinyl Masters for tonight). Several faces that are 'familiar' to me but not personally known.. Also Derek (Pearson), Trevski, (and all the others I can't remember at this point !!). Not forgetting (another of the fine semblance of the chosen DJ's this evening) an Iconic figure in his own right.. Living just a few miles to the north of me, in Peterborough, and a bloke I can remember from way back when in our teenage years - when the Warrina was a particularly more than regular haunt for us young whippersnapper Soulie apprentices, & along with his brother Paul, too, and several other reprobate types that made up the local 'crew' (he was also at the previous Saturday's Attic encounter..) Mick Donnelly !! And to add to the 'happy family' me mukka and diamond geezer Killa arrived soon after. On HIS first visit - after he, too, had heard only good things about the Morley Carr Soul night's. I certainly couldn't have wished for many more of 'my kinda people' to be there - although a few who do regularly make the M.C. were at Prestatyn this weekend - Mr & Mrs Shirley Wood (sorry Col..), Mr & Mrs Woody being the obvious ones, to me. Musically - I didn't hear a 'duff' tune all night. Each of the DJ's contributing with selections in keeping with what I like about the music policy here. Their own musical tastes & vinyl collection ditties forming the ingredients that - together- produced one PERFECT 'Soul Cake' which was eagerly consumed via the 'movers & groovers' constant attendance on a very busy dance floor. The Attic Boy's - I can only reiterate comments already posted by others.. Agreeing entirely with Adam T (get your ass up their Adam - you'll LOVE it !!) and his comment re the Joann Garrett 'Duo' labeled 45. How good of a 'Kicking' tune is THAT !! Johnno gave us 24 discs of brilliance - with some being of a 'seriously' Top Class, desirable rarities type of thing. Tootsie Rollers WASN'T - back in the day I first came across this tune - having sold three copies (in the 90's) from £50 to £80. It turning out to have it's rarity proven in the passing 15 odd years since. Oh, to have a Crystal Ball !! Johnno also made (IMO) a very shrewd investment on the night, too - with the help of Paul. Mick D gave - for me, I believe - THE best set I've heard him produce. Again some serious Big Guns were brought out to add to the incessant onslaught of CLASS, QUALITY, tuneage the attendees bore witness to over the five & a half (?) hours of Superior Soul Domination that Morley Carr 's latest offering dished out. Played toward the end of his set, Mick gave us an outing of the incredible Hollidays (Groove City) 45 mentioned previously.. Being MY (tough decision !!) 'Top Tune' of the night. UNTIL, that is.. Up pops Paul to close the proceedings - and send us all home 'floating on a sea of Class' - when I hear him mention my name, in the same sentence of his introduction to the song that (RIGHT THEN) stole the coveted title from under Mick's (not even closed, yet..) box of masterly vinyl 45's. Only having heard it via an MP3 file previously - how, even BETTER, did it sound at 'venue volume' !! OH, YES !! I NEEEEEEEEEEEED a copy of the disc concerned - so much so , it HURTS !! - Linda Jones' (French, and SOOO beautiful looking) Warner Brothers 45. That was IT, for me.. the PERFECT end to a PERFECT night & PERFECT duo-day of Soulin'. Nothing else could possibly add to the euphoric position I'd been 'jetted' off to via my weekend. So I thought... My gratitude to the promotions team in Bradford for their part in providing me with an incredible night that I, for one, can't WAIT to have opportunity to experience again, AND again.. and AGAIN !! I'll soon be considered a 'bad habit' - with my future attendances at Morley Carr - instead of a 'guest'. After the so many farewell's, and being one of the last to vacate the car park, I made my way back to Doncaster to drop Wendy & Stigga off. A 'pit stop' type break - to partake of refreshments, and a few 'vinyl thingies' Stigga kept appearing with, and I'd soon be making the final hour & a bit journey home. Nope !! Whatever possessed me to think I would depart 'Donny before mid-day would arrive !! I was wrong about anything adding to my 'fully satisfied' lust of Soulin'.. And why I earlier said two & a HALF days. PHEW !! What a Marathon !! My weekend hadn't - as I'd presumed, naturally, - come to an end at all !! The experience was continuing, and continued for the next, approx, NINE hours !!!! I was treated to an education in Soul Music that - to me - proved second to none. I'm in need of a new Notebook.. As I managed to fill all the blank pages I did have left. Busily writing endless things down so as to ensure I had the necessary details I would require if I were to achieve any modicum of success in acquiring any of my ('NEW') wants. Never in the same passage of time have I before been left unable to utter a single word. Not possessing the vocabulary (I don't even think it exists !!) articulate enough to describe what I was feeling. I can only liken it to how (and not a definitive description in itself..) as a very young child - I would sense an incredible 'inner', & complete embodiment of 'excitement' - when in the sweetshop and told 'Choose what you want..' (Kid In The Candy Store, innit) That is the ONLY way I can come anywhere near close to a description of my 'childlike' over-excitedness type feelings that encompassed me during the duration of my 'lesson'. That's ALL I'm gonna say.. Other than - Miss Christine Cooper will now be accompanying me on future travels - after an outing in Canada. What ?? Eh ?? I can hear you saying.. It will, all make sense to you in time to come. Eh, Stigga ??? WATCH~THIS~SPACE.. Fingers.. Link to comment
