Hi all,

just a quick note in here to let everyone know of a new website we've been putting together for the forthcoming book, Groovesville USA by Keith Rylatt. Due to be published in February 2010, it promises to be the ultimate reference for anyone into 60s & 70s Detroit Soul & R&B! The website has some great background stories, previously unreleased images, audio samples, Top 5s from Soul connoisseurs and an eCard feature where you can send an image to friends!

There's also an Early-Bird offer extended to all visitors who register an intent to purchase the book before December 1st. In doing so, you will be sure to receive a signed copy by the author & to have it sent out 24hrs in advance of the general issue!

This book will only be available from the website and numbers will be limited. So why not drop by and check it out:

We've added a new batch of Top 5s with more inspired selections.

You'll find the choices of top US record dealer Craig Moerer – including a nifty video about his shop in the States, Swedish radio producer Lars Nilsson who runs the exhaustive www.seabear.se site, There's That Beat! editor Dave Moore, Hayley Records' supremo Rob Moss, and Motor City collector John Lester who was invaluable with contributions to the book. And 100 Club and Kent Records' top banana Ady Croasdell who slipped through the net and sent us six!

Check them out and then send us your Top 5! thumbsup.gif

Thanks for this mention Steve. I'm going through the Artists index at the moment, checking out info, some of which I built up years ago. One big problem for me however, that I doubt if Robert Pruter or John Broven had to deal with very much in their books about Chicago and New Orleans respectively is that of when is a record, made in Detroit a soul record or not? Overwhelmingly in the other two cities soul sounds were made by artists with an afro-american background - but it in Detroit the whole scene was very cosmopolitan. It's those knockout Solid Hitbound backing tracks that are at the root of it!!! Back then, ANYBODY, so long as they had a few $$ could go along to somewhere like Sound Inc, buy a backing track, hum, whistle, howl..... whatever on top of it and Sound Inc made it into a record for you. They would make up a name for you, the label, the song, press as many as your $$ would bring and even distribute it if you wished. The Fiats are under the stay of execution at the moment. The same problem affects Detroit labels, I'm currently considering axing all of the info on Panik Records for example - is it a soul related label or not? The Deans' `No Not Now` on there is certainly bought by soul fans.
