A place where lasting friendships were born

A place where talking bollocks was the norm

Where Wrigley wrappers filled the floor

Where the local gangsters stood by the door

Jez and I spoke at great length yesterday about an annual Torch Revival evening, although NOTHING will ever get near last Saturday I hope he finds it in himself to 'do another' if he does can I have cash waiting here now for my ticket.

PD

Whatever the decision what is irrefutable is that the Torch sounds do rule, if getting excited and hitting the dancefloor

when you hear a choon you love then you're a Torchie at heart, good work lads and thanks for a great night, well

worth all the aggro at Heathrow trying to get that rifle back to Brussels

Forgot to say a great big well done to Ian Cunliffe, he got me started on decks but best of all when I came onto

the stage he was playing his last record, The Four Larks - Groovin' at the Go Go. This was very first proper rare

Northern Soul record I'd ever heard, on my very 1st trip to a NS venue, the Cats circa 1972, Alan S was playing it.

Yo Ian, it took me 2.5 hours to get thru Heathrow with the air-rifle, you'd think I had a Polaris missile shades.gif I had

2 armed officers escorting me (great blokes) + BA security officer, they x-rayed it, opened it, pulled it about

a bit then hand carried it to the aircraft hold. The cabin crew kept an eye on me for all the flight and made me

get off last. I got a whole lot of info about where I could collect it from. I was waiting at the carousel for my

suitcase when low and behold the package came tumbling down there laugh.giflaugh.gif a very happy workmate come

Monday, box of Belgian chocs next visit promise.

As for the Four Larks they've done somer remarkable work, all that Tom Bell stuff is great, just love Another

Chance & Rain on Tower, try the re-recording of Unbelievable on Uptown, great version. I once wrote an

article on them for Kev Roberts Manifesto, I regret not meeting Viviane before her death she was by all accounts

a poppet, for a school teacher boy can she sing !!!

I'm still tingling all over from Saturday and loved the fact that I was able to sandwich in between you and Nige Brown,

a real honour.

Thanks a million for the Wigan pick-up.................good.gif

Swish - We did know each other, I have to apologise I had the added advantage of you being introduced to us all. When you had finished your stint, a few times I made the move to come over to say hello but either you were collared or I was (or another favourite came on - which of course ruled out most of the day) and before I knew it the day was finished, this is why we have to do it all again next year, cos it's all only now falling into place as to who some of the faces were.

You would probably also recall the trips to the Burton 76 Club on the Sunday, Catacombs, Up the Junction (loved this place), Bletsoe. Other names like Bob Dryden - Wolves, Stu Morris - Nottm, Neil Hedges - Newark, Russ Staley- Mansfield, Liz Tinsley - Wolvs, Doris - Burton. Ricky - Grantham, Pete Jepson - Notm, Olly - Corby (now Nottm), Keith Shepherd & Paul Pleva- Hyde, etc etc

Can anyone remember when we always used to go into those photo booths at the service station or train stations? I have loads of the passport sized photos of various people from these occasions.

Ethna actually is my sister, have to say have never heard of another Ethna on the scene, but then again I used to get called other Irish names from time to time when people knew my name was Irish sounding!! Ethna never went to the Torch as she was too young but was at the Casino from when it first opened, her late husband was Billy Garner who passed away back in 91'. They both used to enter a lot of the dancing competitions.

Memories ...........

boxing.gif Bridgett You went to the fist Wigan Casino AllNighter, sadley I did not But I did go to the next 6, Did you get a First Night Badge? as I reckon they were just given to selected people and not to genuine 1ST All nighter goers, and if you did not know I have the same Irish Romany Blood, just like your MAMMY?

I saw people i have not seen since 1975, HARRY CROSBY, GILLY, DI CROSBY, my old mate ALAN DAY who i last saw at BRETBY. VANDA who i forgot because of my previous stroke's, then to top it all off on WEDNESDAY of this i had another stroke. I am ok now and i can't help but thank the men behind the organisation of it all " PAUL, MALC & JEZ ".

If you have another one next year if it is on the ground floor i will be there.

Dave - I never did make it to the Casino at all due to starting a family in 74, was at the Torch first all nighter though. It was my sister Ethna who was at the first Wigan all nighter. Will check with her whether she got that badge. Was actually born in Dublin's fair city so 100% Irish, just have developed a nice English accent over the years.

Swish - I've not forgotten about those photos, have to sort out a new scanner next week, so hopefully I will have them to you within a week.

:boxing: Hi B

Thanks for that I could of sworn that you went to Wigan I no your Sister did, you could ask her for me? can you remember us lot comeing up from the capital and Hertfordshire Luton Bedford & Cambridge? surley you must remember Mick & Big Clive? as he was a main player, I only got to go twice (a)I was couting and my girlfriend (Irish)parents did not think I was suitable??? ( I use to DJ on Sat Nights and would watch the boys leave around 9.30 painful by the summer of 73 I got some freedom hence going to the VAVA and Wigan it is amazeing how many people dropped of the Allnighter scene in 73 many wheel goers and quite a few Torch devotees and also they all seemed to get hitched (thats what Happens if you lay inbed on a Sat/Sunday night? you and your sister are still great SORTS. Great night allround and Allan Day set the clock back to 1972 brilliant  DAVE KIL X

:boxing: Hi Chris

They were the times? Can you remember which ones?..I think a Lot of peaole were dodgey back then and Big Clive was the type of bloke that a lot of Northern Soul goers tend to stereo type Cockney Boys, I no my own origanal interest in the Cats Torch & Up The Junction was to make money especially after the Luton Lads Got beaten up for there Dubes in the Tiolet I think? What I do Know is with Chriss Gallard or Big Clive and myself any idea of turning over cockneys soon evaperated? I had my DJ box Nicked from Brian Raye in 1977??I was so Gutted it made me ill, over the years less now due to health I have always looked after Mick and others, but people like Smokie from Wolves could fight 10 men and I have seen him do it? DAVE(MY BRUVVER IS HARDER THAN YOURS)KIL

Sue.Hey

I tried to reply the other day.

Computer suddenly crashed.

Then I couldn't get back on Soul Source for a couple of days cos I only have a tenporary password which expires quite often.

Even that you sometimes have to try half a dozen times before it works.

I try to alter temporary password to a permanent one, but it never works.

Anyway Alan Day got in touch today and we had a nice chat.

So I guess you managed to find my phone number somehow.

I'm putting this thread to bed, its was fantastic fun etc now let's all move on.

1- There will be a 2010 Torch Reunion same place, same time, same date contact Jez Jones now..

2- Cheques have gone off to charities

3- Thank you to EVERYONE who helped, contributed etc

4- Trying to arrange a meet up for those friendships that have been reignited after 30 years next April in the East Midlands, again converse with Jezz Jones

5 - and finally I'd like to personally thank one bloke who was always there for us, he gets some bad press on here, some of which my be warranted however I always speak as I find. Kev Roberts not only put us right on a few things, he came along, he dj'd, he got Alan Day there, he donated £100 worth of prizes to the raffle, he MC'd the whole day reading out emails from Dottie Cambridge, Nolan Chances nephew to name but fed who paid their tributes to one of the all time great venues, like all those that contributed to the entertainment he never once asked for a fee. Top geezer in my book.
