I hope they do

I hope the future music fans realise that the best music ever was made mostly in Detroit a long time ago,

by people who by then will be long gone.

I realised that a long time ago

weather anyone else will by then time is another question !

Will we will need the scene?

I don't think so!

We will be quite capable of collecting old music without your help.

In fact it might be quite relaxing without the politics you old bastards introduced into the soul scene ! :D

forever !....cos quality lasts forever...remember once it was just a northern thing ,then it spread to the whole of the country now its all over europe and even the states...its not just the uk just as its not just those on soul source...

yes most night are full of...well slightly older people who may not be out and about in say 10 years and there maybe lots of original tunes for sale bringing the prices down :)...but there are youngsters getting into it abroad or at scooter rallies, which are more family friendly than in the 80s when hardly any of us had kids ! ...in ten years time maybe (because of the internet) they will be buying those tunes keeping the dancin and collecting scenes alive...

and maybe when there are less oldies out more youngsters will be...think back when you were in your teens and twenties...would you wanna be dancin with 50 years olds?

go go in bristol attracts a lot more youngsters than most nights i attend...could this be that bristol has never had a soul scene before ? (not including yate ofcourse)...and out of about 80 people only a couple of dozen of those are soulies over 40...

always get 'younger people' asking me the titles of tracks we would all of known half our life but am also pleasently surprised when youngsters know tunes i wouldnt expect them too

it will no doubt have its ups and downs but im sure it will be around when most of us on here have hung up our dancin shoes

fact is you can say it will carry on but there's a problem. your going to a venue now say with 100 people attending and you see 5 people under 30. and you think if that is the case what happens in years to come will it be a venue for Northern soul with 10 people attending and the ones who are 20/30 are now 50/60 and they don't see anyone who is under 40 coming.

MANILA+SOUL2_LORES.jpg

it is the quantity and quality of Soul music produced in the 60s and 70s that will be appreciated and collected by music fans well into to future IMO.

Soul Music like that can never be remade, it is the forgotten story of peoples lives put on vinyl and is mostly the only document from that obscure and dark time in American history.

Its a wonderful history lesson and all them old 45s tell the story.

Of course it wont die, that's why they they did it and left it for us.

They left us all this material to collect, enjoy and learn about !

and I personally do not think music has improved since the 60s

music has lost its honesty and become a commodity

and that is why their 40 year old masterpieces will be appreciated in the future IMO

it will be a real look in to the past, but they will be using their ears not their eyes !

Until the bulk of Greenland's ice cap melts, causing The Gulf Stream to be cut off, and Britain is again covered in ice.

I'd give it about 40 years for The Gulf Stream to be completely shut down, and another 20-30 years before conditions are so drastic that civilised society has broken down, and people are just worried about survival, and there's no electricity to light the venues and power the turntables.  It won't all be bad.  At least we'll be able to have our 11-town skating race again, every year, and The Netherlands might move up a bit as an ice-hockey power. :D

The rest of western and Northern Europe and Northeastern North America will be covered in ice, as well.  Maybe "Beach" music (for shagging) will survive.  But, I doubt it.  I think USA will suffer a complete breakdown, set off by a horribly bloody race and class war within about 30-40 years, marking a massive depopulation, and return to hunter-gatherer way-of life for small bands of humans.

Haven't I seen a couple of NS fans posting from Australia and Indonesia.  Maybe the scene will just move to less harsh climes?

I think it may have ended . I did a set 2 weeks ago , a rare trip into the Oldies genre . I was playing The Superlatives - I still love you . A female ''Soulie'' jumped on the stage and asked my to play something that does not send her to sleep , I asked what she would like and she replied ''Some Northern would be nice '' . Bet you can't guess my reply ?

There is a bigger, more international interest and love of “NS” now and a much wider interpretation of what it means. Not the lifestyle but the depth and quality of the music.  Many members on SS won’t necessarily like this, but it helps with longevity.  Although we ( NS fraternity), do live in the past in many ways, in other ways we have helped expand and promote this fantastic music and kept it going (hope that doesn’t sound too paternal).

Most venues I go to or hear about cater for a wide variety of interests via different rooms and different DJs although many DJs can easily switch between all the many brilliant sub styles be they Latin, xover, beat ballad, sweet, rola, monster niter, classic oldie, underplayed gem etc etc. They have to cater for the non dancers, dancers, collectors, young and old to keep the interest alive  - which they have done IMHO. Members of SS should pat themselves on the back for being involved via their depth of knowledge on the artists, labels, musicians, industry background and workings, assisting with constant new discoveries and the promoters ability to issue long lost gems never before released. Ady C is one of my heroes in this respect as is the late John Anderson.  The whole switch to download and massive access to Spotify, YouTube and via voice recognition technology has opened up content never before possible.  I for one spend hours listening to playLists via this medium but only to then search and buy the original vinyl - and the supply has also increased via discogs etc as well as our old friendly dealers with their constantly upgraded web sites. My wants list has exploded.  Ouch!

Of course it is a small sub sector of the whole massive music industry but no longer totally underground and that’s a good thing. For how much longer though, who knows but I’m not giving in just yet

Ah yes maybe that's the answer? ….its now a money thing and as long as records keep going up in value the scene will continue?

Can anybody remember when it was about the music and not the label? We had no clue if we were buying original. pressing , re-issue or just a plain boot...and we didn`t care... it was all about the music and a chance to practice at home with your swallow dives , drops kicks and spins.

Then we could turn up at the Torch, Casino, Mecca, et al and enjoy the interpretation of the sounds played... dancing with heart and soul and not really thinking about when will it all end.

Come to think of it as long as I can still shuffle around, and clubs like Grosvenor ,, Knutton, Northern line , Kingsway an not forgetting some of the bigger events continue to blast out the classics...…. THEN It ain`t gonna end...Though it may change a bit.

Strong as ever, I think not.  Attendance's are dropping at most all-nighters, with half the number in some that used to be there. Far too many soul nights which is detrimental to the well being of the scene.

I say scene, it is no longer a scene, just a social gathering now.  It is a diluted parody of what it once was, full of cheese, commercialism and divvies.

There aren’t many events that interest me.  I’m still one who wants progression, of which there is hardly any anywhere. It still is about the music for me, friendship is important of course and I’ve made many life long friends,  but it was always the music that made it for me.  Now it is an oldies led affair regardless of the type of venue or event you attend.

Ah yes the new tunes, I too can remember when Sliced tomatoes, Gone with the wind etc were new tunes ...and we all looked at each other in awe and wonderment. But I had an experience a couple of years back that kind`a puts all this into perspective for me.

Kings H 2016 about 3am trotting out to a Torch Classic " Superlatives I still love you"... record finishes and a young guy who I guess would be in his late teens and had pounded the floor next to me says as we walk off... scuse me mate what was that record is it modern or old and can you still get it??     I had to smile

So I  guess old may still be new to some.

That is true but the vast majority of punters aren’t new to the game and the majority will know the classics. He may have heard it for the very first time but I bet 90% in the KH were hearing it for the umpteenth time.

i don’t mind oldies if some imagination is used but rarely does it get used.

I guess it really is a matter of taste and how often you get to events.

if your out every week it will get a bit stale but if its every month or 6 weeks then hey ho.

And if Andy Dysons playing a set it will be oldies and it WILL be anything but boring.

Horses for courses and all that , room for all and everyone and ….back to the thread

When will it all end? Who knows ….enjoy it while it lasts ….whatever it may be

The U.K. Northern Soul Scene is in its last throws in respect of what the scene should be ie Nighter  Led . Age and saturation have screwed it along with the numerous host of so called Coll’s tor’s who lack taste and innovation buying over the hill records for daft money because most don’t know otherwise ?
Also the current nighter scene use the same DJs regularly and that to me as a paying punter is a huge turn off . I would rather do a local soul night that features Collectors playing interesting records that’s what I do these days .
If young people are visiting venues on mass I have not seen them saying that I understand good scenes exist in other countries with a younger crowd and that’s great !
I love the fact that the scene has had longevity but hand on heart wide trousers shit playlists promoters using the same  DJs and Johnny come latelys have killed it for me .
It does not surprise me that some of the real big names of the scene from when it was exciting rarely bother now in many respects it’s an absolute embarrassment!

It's always been a music and dance thing for me too. Never been into the 'group friends thing' - Not that, that is bad, just saying it wasn't/isn't me.

And, I guess you are right in some respects...it is now an oldies led affair (inevitable really) - BUT that doesn't mean you still can't find the music venue, with like minded people. A nod, or a smile to a fellow dancer, that brings that collective consciousness (history) that carries the spirit of NS on without parody.

As for progression, i'm not sure where you progress from and to - OR- where we have progressed from and to since '68 (or '73 if you're hung up on the Cathedral timescales). And the 'scene', i agree, is really a thing of the past that can only be timescaled for each individual e.g. some say it ended in '75, some say...etc.

I think also it finishes at different venues for different reasons other than the event closing. It can become clicky a bit stale the same old same old and many other reasons.

It hasn't finished for me yet but I'm only a sprog (53) but I can understand some of my older mates that have been there seen and done it a few to many times and have called it a day. But I know that even if they just hear those words (Northern soul) they still get a twinge of emotion inside.

Because it will always be inside you somewhere.

Hugh.
