It was absolutely genius of you and Cliff to book Sammys for the mini - nighter.

A packed dancefloor, top sounds and great company really made it a night to remember.

Lets have more of the same in 2010

Best Wishes

Absolutely brill night well worth the journey, crowd just right, and a great cross section of soul music. A most enjoyable place to DJ at, I was a bit nervous at first but no need, a good dancing crowd that dance to any good music you throw at them and they also made my life easy by requesting loads of stuff( Sorry for any I didn't get round to playing)great atmosphere good sound system and met some great local soul fans.

Highlight of the night... Paul trying to slide down the banisters and falling most of the way!!

Can't wait for another maybe get a 6am Finnish?! but that said I was home by 9am.. wow!

what a superb nite ! ...soooo full of atmosphere ..... walkin up those stairs and into that club after 30 odd years...what a buzz ! the place really filled up quick with smiling faces...... all smiling cos you could feel the nite was going to be one to remember.....good.gif ..... it was great to be asked to dj at such an event and i loved every minute,.... there was a brilliant wide spectrum of sounds played and the dancefloor was never empty... nice to see some old faces from the Rotherham "windmill" days...a very succesful nite in proper style.... with proper folk ... and proper "Northern soul " ....!

As a long time collector I would just like to know what the differance is between ''proper Northern '' and maybe not-proper Northern . Only I am a bit curious that is all . Having been to The Cat's , The Torch , The Casino , The 100 club ect ect I would like to know what i have been collecting and listening to for all these years . Nothing ill intended .

Hey Mak ! take the words as a general thing.... proper Northern soul means different things to different people ... just to me and many others.... the nite pushed all the right buttons, you know what i mean, I am sure that many people at many venues every week have what they feel are "proper Northern soul moments" ..... no need to discuss that any further really .... i hope wherever you were over the weekend you too felt the wonderfull feeling of being young again when all that mattered was getting up and having a dance and a good time... !thumbsup.gif take care Mak have a soulful Christmas of whatever you wish to be "proper " ? come n' say hello if you see me around in Notts yes.gif

ps . re your last post, you know what you like and so you should , just as all of us on here do, even if they have been on the scene for 38 years like me , or a few months like some "new" soulies ..... (can i still use that word on here lol ? whistling.gif)

I know what you mean Mak.... but consider how many times you have been at that crossroads with "our music " ... the times when you think it's all gone wrong.... then you get to hear the tunes you love and the support of your friends and you just bounce back again, Keep the faith as you want to keep it and enjoy the journey..... no matter how many wrong turns it makes..... cos finding your way, (and your "mojo" too).. makes it all worthwhile ...good.gif.

take care , Pete n' susan x

Well John Howard and myself and a few more did what should have been the very last nighter there in early 2008, because within weeks they were meant to be ripping the shit out of of the interior angry.gif . and it was Johns intention to continue in the newly refurbed venue with four do's a year when completed, however i suffered a heart attack being a co promotor with John we decided to leave things alone for a while until i recovered , So in answer to your question yes John and Howard may be back there in the futurethumbsup.gif . Cliff and Tony asked me about Sams what they planned because they could not get city limits for christmas and ive supported them all the way and a job well done too. thumbsup.gif

The casino complex is looking good too,

Hey guy's .... calm down now.....the term "proper" is just one person's opinion and should not be taken as a challenge to one's own perception of the reality of whatever is being talked about...... by heck! , Northern soul is emotional stuff eh ? ..... end of the day we are all mates really i hope, whatever our views thumbsup.gif ....... cos we all love this music, the people , the venues , the history..... cos it's "proper" ..good.gif

love and peace to all and KTF.....

Firstly , it was only a question

Secondly it was not personally addressed to you

Thirdly it was not posted other than to clear up a comment posted by someone else....and finally as already stated.........

CATACOMBS , TORCH , CASINO , SAM'S , 100 CLUB , ATTIC , BENTINCK , AND DERBYSHIRE BORN AND BRED

Plus various venues that stretch from north to south of this country

Calm down this is feedback, and please remember quite a lot of folks think northern soul revolved round Wigan casino FFS and no where else .

When I see debates like this one, I like to stick my 5 penn'orth in as an old soulie from the 60s scene (Mojo, Esquire, Twisted Wheel, Palais, Night Owl, Beachcomber, String O' Beads, et al). I love most of the Soul, RnB & Motown that I danced to at the allnighters in the 60s before Dave Godin (RIP) allegedly coined the phrase 'Northern Soul' in 1970.

I think that my contempories and I have a slightly different opinion about what NS is / means, to most of the next generation who are likely to have started on the scene during the 70s and frequented such places as Wigan Casino and Blackpool Mecca.

For what it's worth, I think that Dave Godin coined the phrase NS as a compliment to the strength of the soul scene in the North of England and testimony to the commitment of Northerners to soul music at that time. It was a great discovery for him to see for himself how vibrant it all was at the Wheel. The unique dancing styles of people there and most of all, the fantastic music, all of which blew him away. I suppose it was a bit like archimedes shouting 'Eureka' in the bath when he discovered displacement - Dave Godin saying 'this is Northern Soul' at the Twisted Wheel when he discovered the soul scene in the North because it was very much underground in those days, unlike today.

My point is that NS is whatever it means to you because your opinion is as good as anyone elses even if it may not accord with theirs. Brett

not a prob with your comments Brett i was merely trying to quash where this was going

It was not the point i was trying to make but the way it was going was not correct imho and if they want to argue this and that they should start a thread up re" i went here you went there ner ner local rivelry ffs " or maybe it is spillover from another thread.

not start on a feedback of a do

Hi patto... I was round at Dave's and we were chatting about "ABBA" and "Take That" and for some unknown reason the isley brothers "that's the way love is" came up:rolleyes:

but really i was after a copy and Dave had Two... or so he thought but could not find it ... so he loaned me his.. (iv'e now got a copy on the way ) .... It's not so often played but is a superb dancer with good breaks and can be danced to as upbeat or mid tempo ...deserves more plays in my very very humble opinion......but hey? thats just me ........as for a play list.... that was one of them lol ...and thank you for your well wishes, i appreciate it..thumbsup.gif
