Whats Your Favourite Soul Concert Ever?

Recommended Posts

Just had to let you all know how good tonight was in Sydney, It was a free concert in the middle of Sydney and Al Green was the headline act!!

Over 80 thousand people moving to all his classics and a few covers. He nearly pulled out due to Willie Mitchells death.

This guy still has it!!! sharp falsetos a great presence and he had each of the 80 k audience in the palm of his hand!! It was quite an emotional evening.

love to hear anybody elses experiences at seeing great soul gods live!

Sounds great. Wish I was there - I've never seen Al Green live. I've seen some awesome concerts though, such as

Michael Jackson - Wembley Stadium 1988 (seriously!)

Luther Vandross - Wembley Arena 1987

Prince Phillip Mitchell - Fleetwood 2002

Maze - Hammy O 1989

Anita Baker / Perri - Wembley Stadium 1988

Jean Carne - Dominion 1988

Stevie Wonder - Royal Albert Hall 1995

Gerald Albright / Peices of A Dream / Bill Withers - Hammy O 1988

Prince - Wembley Arena 1988

I'm very much looking forward to seeing Teena Marie in Jan.

No, I didn't know there was a forthcoming release. The last CD was from last year - Lay It Down - which was pretty good.

Al Hudson and Soul partners at The Blackpool Mecca!

Wish I had a clue who I was watching but I was taken by cousin's bird who was red hot and well worth a tug! She was my fave wank for five years!

Can't remember much about Al Hudson but I did visit the Highland rooms and that is where my Northernsoul odyssey started, great music but there was a bird wearing stockings and suspenders flashing her trumpet every time she span in her circle dress!

Still keeps me awake on a night!

A couple of more recent concerts spring to mind during recent Vegas trips...

One was Etta James last year - god knows how old she is now but she sure knew how to flirt with an audience - and is wasn't all that subtle either !! unfortunately half way through the concert she decided she's had enough and walked off.....

The other was Jim Belushi and the Sacred Hearts - doing all the Blues Brothers stuff and a bit more... all good crowd pleasing stuff and lots of audience participation - but the standout was the harmonica player who did a lengthy solo - awesome !!!

AL GREEN at Southampton Gaumont circa 1975, absolutely awesome at his peak.

FOUR TOPS at same venue, same period, utterly brilliant performance, made more memorable by meeting LEVI and the lads backstage and sitting with them for nearly an hour talking about Detroit and Chicago in the 60s. Me and two mates, the only people who bothered going back! LEVI had on the biggest gold lions head ring I had ever seen! Still remember asking him about MAJOR LANCE and he replied 'Yeah I had a few beers with 'The Major' in Detroit a few months ago!' We followed their coach for 25 miles up the old A roads until they turned onto the old M3 junction, flashing us big grins and thumbs up from their coach windows. Oh, the golden days of youth....!!thumbsup.gif

The Dells was a standout for me,mainly because I went with Martyn Ellis, hadn't been out and about for a long time, and met up with several old faces..........brilliant.

Gladys Knight was awsome in Hanley in the seventies, when she sang Help me make it through the night, you cold have heared a pin drop..........and at the end the place exploded.

Al Green was disappointing in Manchesterrecently, half an hour and just seemed to be going through the motions.

The 3 at the top of my list would be.

1. JJ Barnes at The Casino (mid /late70's)

This was the first time I heard a black man sing live and it was the absolute main reason I continued the soul journey. I swear I changed physically that night.

2. My second would be The Masqueraders at Prestatyn for shear Quality and Class.

3. Ray Pollard/Tony Middleton/Terry Callier/Sid Barnes/Hoagy Lands/Maxine Brown/Betty Lavette/Dean Parrish at 100club.

Would have loved to have seen The O'Jays and Jackie Wilson.

I got spoiled by the first gig I ever went to - Sam & Dave @ Sheffield Fiesta in early 70's. Absolutely unbelievable performance when they both came out into the audience at both sides of the venue and just blew the place apart.

I thought all gigs were gonna be like that!

Seen most acts over the years but I've never seen a performance as good as that first one!
