My first nighter for a long time and what an event to pick to return to doing nighters!!

The music was excellent and of course the pick of the DJs for me was Andy Dyson who never disappoints but all the other DJs played blinders too and I heard a ton of music that I hadn't heard at other dos.

Nice to meet Nige and Carms again, also bumped into that mentalist Simon Cuerden but couldn't see Wicksy anywhere.

Had to call it a night at 4 as my 1 year old grandaughter had woken us up at 7am but I'll make sure I get some proper kip before the next one!

Many many thanks to Simon and Aimee for their work in putting this on, a fantastic night and only a mile from my front door! :D

id jus like to add my thanks and support , though ive forgotten what i was gonna say now, got there at midnight, immediately wished we,d arrived a bit sooner, mainly because the lights were probably working then, along with the microphone, and i could have seen what i was trippin over, and not have to repeat me Norman Collier impression for james troubles entire spot to groans of fake appreciation from anyone in earshot. things immediately looked brighter (though at the time darker), as i thought i would easilly hide anonymously away shielding me eyes from all the people i cant bear to look at in case they might be looking at me pointin and talking behind their hands to stop me seeing that they might be referring to me Mind you the feedback from the left speaker during james .s spot and the inky blackness of the dancefloor felt like being subject to an half an hour in a snoezalon room where the fuses had blown with a light aircraft piloted by jimmy hendrix circling around the bubble chamber. my anonymity blown after i tried to spin and only managed to turn towards the bar, and drip feed this blokes pint into the waistband of his trousers, a bit like charlie corooly used to do to his mates at the circus, No-one seemed to be as amused as me about it though, still its better than pointing out assertively that he was standing on the flipping DANCEFLOOR about an inch from the back of my neck at the TIME. Still apology accepted (in theory ,anyhow),and i skulked off up the stairs to wreak further havoc, speaking of which, i noticed a familiar odour on the stairs but was dismayed to find that it was me which smelled of stale ammonia, talk about sensory overload, i wish id spent some time at least upstairs in the rythm and blues room, my mate greg mentioned he,d enjoyed what he,d heard up there, mainly that the bay city rollers are fashionable once again , you could actually wash your feet in the beer and, the music played in there is a flippin education in itself,( other stuff overheard , is better reported after the kids have gone to bed.). downstairs, i should mention Anton , who,s spot, seemed to get a unanimous thumbs up from the dancefloor , as did james, (ahem, classics hmm, reminishnt isnt it? blue vinyl, blue stratosh, and er blue veins , shad really, end of an era ,or is it? hmm?( thanks ron!)

Had a really good time at the citrus room as always .

Always a friendly atmosphere with well known travellers who wer well in attendance and Top DJs! Which i was pleased for Simon and Amie, they deserve it with all their hard work and devotion thumbsup.gif

Music policy sumthin for everyone ,hopefully with a good mixed bag but mainly uptempo!

The nite for me seemed to step up a gear and start rockin with Mr Dyson with a well put together set which would keep me happy tune after tune. The hair on my neck stands up with his 3 opening signiture tunes..Not always in the same order tho LOL Oh and Eddie Rey

which he always bangs on somewher before i get chance to ask for hatsoff2.gif

Next up Daddy Dave Rivers who took the helm perfectly and carried on wer Andy left off with the best set ive heard him play in while. Never put a foot wrong( he didnt believe me tho) such modesty innocent.gif

And for the last hour our host Simon who played a brill set to a still full dance floor keeping it at the same pace right thru till the end.To send us all home happy thumbup.gif

Also we had the young Toby geezer celebrating his birthday. He was made up with the turn out from his friends ! he had a grin on him all nite like a cheshire cat..Top Bloke with a passion for it !!

If i had any contructive critisism.. a bit more light and the floor cud do with sum repair unsure.gif

A great bounce back Simon & Amie.A venue well on the map for future visits for me shades.gif

I had a brilliant time, hardly danced at all but certainly not through lack of quality sounds. Just had the best time chatting and laughing with friends that I hadn't seen for a while, the usual suspect and new acquaintances. Fantastic atmosphere that carried right on down to the services, loved chatting to the two guys outside and obviously the usual services crowd.

Well done Simon and Amy, Don't stop the music xxthumbup.gif

Without a doubt the best ever Nighter to hit Barnsley, well done all involved and thanks for keeping "Soul Tarn" dripping in quality!

The South Yorkshire Soul Searchers hit the town in the cold of the night looking round for the warmth of the light there was fog all around so I guess no one saw us arriving. We headed up towards the Metrodome for a warm up courtesy of Dave's sixtieth birthday and tapped our toes with what seamed like the complete population of Yorkshires Soul Night community, the very best warm up ever, happy birthday Dave.

Stepped outta the night It was brighter inside Someone come and asked me my name Taken back by surprise What I saw with my eyes A girl in a love's disguise, soon we where hopping over to The Citrus Rooms for the Nighter.

My first impressions where that the heating was on, if you didn't notice this then fine but what it says is that Amie & Simon had listened to the punters and sorted this out, well done!

The numbers where at least double the amount as last time and I think this was due to the DJ list and to the reputation that is growing and growing for this allnighter that had never assumed anything but has now well and truly established its self up in the major leagues and more than ready to play in any cup final!

The venue is atmospheric with its dark spots that never appear gloomy but they add to the feeling of exclusive without loosing any welcoming appeal. Difficult to carry off but add to this the scary stary people and the friendliness of Soulies meeting and greeting it becomes a family affair without excluding any one.

There is certainly a charm about the place and a feeling of real inspiration, great to remember that Amie & Simon are so young and passionate. Any preconceptions are left at the door and the emphasis is on "Storming Soul" without having to revert to any formula.

On a very personal note I had been badgering any one who would listen to play my old time favorite "A Touch of velvet a sting of brass", I finally gave up the ghost and bought the single on the night and gave it to Anton, we had made a previous drunken arrangement and he had promised to play it for me. Well I'm not sure if he believed that I would remember this but on the night I handed him the single to play half way through his set, look on the face springs to mind lol.

The needle hit the groove and there was moments of trepidation as the first bars hit ears, remember this track was dropped after the casino days and to my mind never dusted off? I watched Anton's face go from "Whoops what have I done" to "Thank fook for that!" The tune was well accepted and a round of applause was given! Kudos Anton and Kudos to the Barnsley crowd, you got Soul!

To the Stormin Soul jocks who blasted us with some thing old and some thing new thanks and mega to get a chance to hear some of the under played Wigan sounds that would not normally have been outed less for the passion and energy of the dancers.

James Trouble gets a cream egg from me, well done! You were the dude on Saturday night, it was as if you were connected to the floor and giving us exactly what we wanted!

Have I got any criticisms of Barnsley?

Only the one I have always had and that is the wasted up stairs room, dump the RnB and give us a Modern room, attendances will double and we can compromise with having a few scattered RnB tracks down stairs.

I know there are some very passionate RnB cats in attendance but that room aint being used to its true potential.

In summary, wow! I feel as if I have fallen down a pit shaft! Super night, brilliant people and DJ's that do the voodoo that they do so well!

Amie & Simon xxx thank you.

Nice to see you too Gordy , it's a been a few years since we saw you last . I reckon you have got taller , you even made fudge look small .

We only stopped for James T's and Andy Dysons sets because we had already put 5 hours in covering Bury Masonic and travelling down, plus the sensational night we had the night before at Southport , it all sort of started catching up at Barnsley and we were starting to feel the pinch at 3am, so we decided to make our journey back to Manchester.

Great to see a few people we hadn't seen in a while.

Fantastic night Ames and Si . See Simon ! the Panic was on , as you do, but turned out a great night

as i knew it would. Was Great to see you guys its been far to long.

Loved as always the R&B room , one of the best line up of Djs you are ever going to find, It was a tad quiet upstairs at times but the word will be put around to the mass of "the Devils music" lovers that i know are out there... buzzing most of the night all the same, loads of stuff i had not heard before but soon as you hear them you think Wow !!!

The music, as always was good down stairs and the floor was full at all times.

Criticize ???..........Nope ! cant find a one ....

Well done yet again you toothumbup.gif

Agree with Stevie T.

The R&B room was class, Joe Dutton's second set up there was the pick of the bunch for me! Few more numbers in there and the atmosphere will be even better.

Spent a fair bit of time downstairs aswell which also ticked the box's for me, uptempo/in yer face!!!!! absolutely spot on night. Can't wait for the next one!

SIMON AND AIMEE, WELL DONE ON ANOTHER FANTASTIC NIGHT.

WAS UP AND DOWN THOSE STAIRS ALL NIGHT. WHAT A GREAT WAY TO GET SOME EXERCISE thumbup.gif

THE LINE UP IN THE RNB ROOM IS ABOUT AS GOOD AS IT GETS IMO. LOADSA TUNES I'VE NOT HEARD BEFORE, ALWAYS SOMETHING REFRESHING

AM RATHER DISMAYED AT IMBER BOYS GREAT IDEA (NOT) FOR THE UPSTAIRS ROOM AND HOPE THERE ARE NOT GOING TO BE ANY CHANGES. THIS NIGHTER IS PERFECT AS IT IS.

WHEREVER THERE IS A SECOND ROOM ITS NEARLY ALWAYS A CASE OF RAMMED ONE MINUTE AND HALF EMPTY THE NEXT PURELY AS MOST PUNTERS WILL WANT TO SPEND SOME TIME IN THE OTHER ROOM TOO.

I REMEMBER IMBER BOYS POST AFTER THE FIRST TIME HE ATTENDED THIS NIGHTER SAYING HE WISHED MORE SEVENTIES HAD BEEN PLAYED. THIS NIGHTER IS ADVERTISED AS 60'S AND NOW HE WANTS A MODERN ROOM . BEGINNING TO WONDER IF THIS NIGHTER IS HIS TYPE OF THING AT ALL. SORRY MATE BUT THAT'S THE WAY IT SEEMS

KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK SIMON AND AIMEE AND DON'T CHANGE A PERFECT RECIPE

g.gifI have supported this fantastic allnighter from the word go and if you truly think that an empty room upstairs for the best part of the night is the way forward then its me that's out of step?

I have nothing against RnB and nothing against the sixties, I do know from experience that up stairs at Barnsley aint exactly rammed.

I don't want to see an empty Modern room as much as I don't want to see an empty RnB room but the fact is that Simon needs bums on seats in order to maintain this mega allnighter.

You do not need to "sell out" and there is nothing wrong with the formula but the fact remains that upstairs is not as full as it should be to deserve any dead horses being flogged!

Radcliff had a Modern room that changed direction at 0300hrs and it worked a treat, I am all for rare music but the active ingredient is people dancing, Barnsley has been on long enough to know that the RnB room is a failed experiment.

I am truly sorry to all of the RnB cats who do not want to read this and I do admire and respect your knowledge and passion but Simon is not in any financial position to allow a disaster!

Why not compromise?

I will end this post with what is important and that is we have a superb allnighter here and it is both a privilege and a joy to attend, the dancers, the venue, the jocks all are top notch!

Simon,

Did'nt Johnny Walker use 'Touch of velvet' as his backing track for his radio shows since he started out from pirate days to the BBC years.

Kevinnocent.gif

Not sure but got a feeling Simon Dee used it as well as Dave Lee Travis.. Not to say Johnny Walker did also.

First time for me. Brilliant Nighter. The usual, propper nighter people in attendance, great atmospheric venue (Coggy, I disagree, the darker the better). But the best part is the Music, can't comment on the tunes before 2am due to a visit to USOS but never heard a bad record, loved Dave Rivers's set and Simon, your set was perfect for me, outstanding mate, very consistent Dance music.

Loved it, when's the next one! thumbsup.gifthumbsup.gifthumbsup.gif

First of all I'd just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who came on Saturday. WOW, what a crackin night!! You know you're doing something right when the lights go on and the floor (and the rest of the room) is as busy as it was! I'll never forget seeing that.smile.gif

Special thanks to the dj's too - that dancefloor was busy right from the start of the night and it didn't empty once no.gif A real testament to the quality of music being played. All in all it couldn't have been a better night and all those who missed it, seriously MISSED OUT. I'm sorry but it was that good!shades.gif

We know the RnB has struggled with numbers of late but the music up there is second to none. I put the shyness down to the condition of the room at past events and the fact that the music in the main room is so strong too. The RnB loft will continue for the foreseeable future as I think it is the music that fits best with the Stormin' Soul ethos, and I really want to get ut back to how it was the first two nights before the room deteriorated. But Imberboy is right - we can't afford to have that room quiet and we really need the RnB crowd to come support it and get it back to how it was. Roger, Joe and Ted do a great job with the music and deserve a bit more support. Now that the room is sorted I'm confident the numbers will return as it has the potential to be THE premiere RnB club on the scene. So come on, spread the word! The room is in the best shape it's ever been and the music is top top drawer.yes.gif

Comments are always taken on board and are always put forward to show management. The club was in need of some investment. It has since been taken over and the new owners have already indicated improvements are on the way. Dancefloor is soon to be reconditioned and varnished and many will have noticed the cold and smell has already gone from upstairs. All in all I think the allnighter and the club is moving in the right direction in terms of reputation, music, djs, and the facilities. I must stress I don't want the club too 'nicey' as it's got a gritty character, and amazing atmosphere and is a proper 'underground all night venue'. wicked.gif

The move to Saturdays has really helped and I think by the end of the year the attendance will be double what we had on Saturday - without a doubt. After a couple of cancelled do's last year I wouldn't have blamed anyone for thinking Stormin' Soul might never be back, but boy didn't it come back with a vengeance. boxing.gif

Thanks again to everyone who came and supported us and had a bloddy good night. Spread the word - Stormin' Soul is back - and it ain't takin any prisoners this time!diablo.gif

someone had metiones thre had been a flood inthe downstairs room, to be honest you wouldnt have known as the dancefloor while havin a couple of gaps between ht eboards seemed in better nick than first couple times i went a year ago, i can only say that i was happy enough in the main room to stay , though i know the line up in the r&b room spoke for itself in terms of the quality of music on offer i just made it upstairs once or twice all night. i think on another night there may have been twice the nuber of punters in there as was on saturday, and that would probably have made the room less forlorn in appearance. I couldnt make a suggestion as to how to improve it, i suspect it,ll just evolve as the main room has.Saturday night was pretty special and thats evolution , in my view, from a night which in the past made me feel a little ambivalent about returning to one which i,d look out for in the future. thanks anyway.
