Pity this clashes with "On The Soul Side" at Bournemouth Uni as wouldn't have minded coming along as used to frequent the Blue Lagoon when Johnny Rolfe and then Keith & Maxine used to run them on a friday night.

i know what you mean regarding the clashes dave...it would be great to go to both venues.......

saturday night has gotta be better for this event......

Certainly has got to be better. If they've anymore booked then hope they pick a date that doesn't clash with other do's so can get down there again.

as far as im aware they have 4 booked..not sure if they are in events calender though

if they have to clash its better if they do with the pier or the belvedere as different sort of night to yours at the uni

think it classes with the crown as well Dave, whats gonna be the music policey?

i dont think it will affect the railway club tim...its not gonna be rare and underplayed stuff but it aint gonna be a cheese fest...blue lagoon was always a real good mix of tunes......they have apologised for clashing...its only dates they could get unless they reverted back to a friday

Yes Tim it does on two accasions....shame really.....i will have to visit the lagoon before that....i've heared it's a class venue...never got to go before as work was the problem then...running pubs and the staff letting me down all the time....thumbsup.gif

June 19th

August 21st

October 23rd

November 27th

sorry to Dave and Alfie

we are working on next years dates and we will let you know well in advance

Sorry again

Mark & Keith

Hi guys,

Only clashes with 2 dates at Uni.Not a problem.Hope to have my dates soon for next year.So hopefully we can get summat sorted.

Regards

Dave.

theres a calender thats been sorted for the hertfordshire and surrounding areas......it would be great if all the south cost promoters and "close events" could do something along the same lines.....toddy always has the 2nd saturday of the month but imvho it would matter clashing with the event at the pigeon club that alternates with bishopstoke....alfie and chilli plus dave morris at the uni are very accommodating

The thread is asking for any memories relating to the Blue Lagoon at the Hilsea Lido, as mentioned by Theresa a topic on the site was covered on the venue during 2009.

Which at the time made interesting reading I didn't make any comments back then but I would like to share my memories with you now? I had moved south in 1981 with no knowledge that a Northern Soul scene existed down on the coast, I thought at the time I was leaving it all behind in the North West. How wrong I was prior to kick starting my own soul nights in the Bournemouth , (InCrowd Soul Society), area in December 1992 which I am still running. I didn't know many people at the time that was into Northern Soul in Bournemouth but through word of mouth, I discovered two great little venues one being St Denys in Southampton, and further up the coast was the Blue Lagoon which at the time was being run by John and Becky.

A train journey and a £35.00 taxi fare home to Bournemouth Friday nights would never be the same again. Some great friendships were born at the Blue Lagoon and I am pleased to say have continued through to the present day. As my own nights started to take off it wasn't long before a regular posse from Bournemouth was attending the Blue Lagoon.

The promoters put together some great nights featuring DJ's like Tony Ellis, Barry Willmore, Chris Dale, Irish Greg, Roger Banks and a whole host of local guest spinners.

Some of the tunes that hold memories for me back then were Wayne Anthony-Blow Me A Kiss, Howard Guyton- I Watched You Slowly Slip Away, Chuck Jackson -Hand It Over, George Pepp-The Feeling is Real and Jimmy Soul Clark-I'll Be Your Champion just a few of the many great tunes, good times!.

One of my last memories at the Lagoon would have been in December 2000 when I hit the Big 40 from memory that was a great night. However back to the present and the Torch is about to be lit again at the old venue, I would like to take this opportunity as a fellow promoter but more importantly as a friend to wish you both every success with your venture. I look forward to supporting the venue whenever I can, an excellent choice of guest DJ Matt on your opening night. Matt has always delivered the goods throughout the 17 years whenever he has been behind my decks and we are looking forward to his return at the Belvedere Hotel later this year.

Ta for the kind words Steve- really enjoyed last Saturday at the Belvedere- keep up the great work!- I was resident at the Lagoon in John & Beccy Rolfe's day- I always remember playing the first hour then Keith Barnes would take over with John Rolfe always playing some great tunes after. The guests often included Keith and Maxine Woon, Shay , Steve C etc some top guests have graced this venue- always across the board quality music. Looking forward to going back there. John and Beccy used to travel miles to put the event on, from South Wales! another 80 miles on from where I live in Wiltshire! that was true dedication. If only John Rolfe would turn up with his old sales boxes with the old prices! I met some great friends for the first time at the venue such as Jason Desmond, Martin Adams, Greg etc- happy times in deedy!!

Johnny, myself & Ray Gillen conceived the idea one night at another local venue after getting bored with the same old same old & the South Coast Rythmn & Soul Society was the name we came up with, John found the venue & I supported in the background initially, although John was always the sole promoter.

I would like to see some of the original DJ's, Dave Abbott, Molly, Steve Csordas, Lloyd Attrill, Jed, Tony Ellis, Shifty, Shay, Ben Summers & Keith n Max as well as some of the later additions to the role of honour..........I would also hope that the Lagoon continues in the spirit that it was originally intended, other wise it'll just be yet another soul night...........

Some fantastic nights there & some lasting friendships, as well as cutting my teeth on the Wheels of Steel........some of my plays there were Johnny Rogers - Make a Change, Martha Starr - Love is the Only Solution, Vivian Carol - Oh Yeah, Yeah, Yeah & later, now Modern classics such as You Aint Sayin' Nothing New & the Abshott anthem Barbara Lynn 'Moovin' on a Groove'..........we had em all & Shifty would be playing the big newies & RARE oldies, as well as Irish Greg (running the Water Rats at the time, but later 100 Club resident) slamming the biggies of the moment also..........Matt was always playing great sets there, as he still does every where & John would be playing 6ts club classics along side the t'other flavours of the month, holding it all together.......happy days

Please keep it real guys..........remember you have a huge legacy to live up to & to continue........... it shoudnt be just another oldies night please, although I appreciate oldies must be a part of most nights these days, the Blue Laggon was definitly not jus an oldies venue, it was much, much more than that & has the potential to be again........

Good luck. I will be there if I'm in the country...........

Russ, what colour is the sky on your planet?! The South Coast Rythmn and Soul Society had been going since the late seventies. The venue, in the early days, was Waterlooville Football Club. Then the Soul nites were at the Blue Lagoon from 1981. The only thing you got right, was that Johnny Rolfe was the sole promoter, (from the very beginning). It was also Johnny Rolfe that founded the Cavaliers scooter club, in the late seventies. He was also responsible for the first Isle of Wight Scooter rally, at Smallbrook stadium in1981. It was Chris Dale that ran the Waterats, not Greg. There you go with Shifty again! He played there Once! It was also Johnny Rolfe that Played Johnny Rogers, which he later sold to you for £400. Mean what you say and "keep it real".
