Winstanley's Disoveries?

Wasn't Yvonne Baker first played at the Mecca? I might be wrong on that but it's a niggling thought. Maybe the Mecca played it later I can't recall.

Rather than "discoveries" which is always a misnomer since most people at the time discovered these records in their letter box or in a bin at Soul Bowl or a market stall in Bradford, maybe "broken by" would be a better expression to use (and I don't mean broken as in Pete SMith's Carstairs).

Whilst I am a big critic of Russ and the Wigan bandwagon he has promoted he did play some good records such as Willie Hutch "Love games", Larry Hale "Once" and Lee Fields "Take me back" I believe was his too. But it's all so hazy now someone else may lay claim to beating him to it.....

'Broke by' is certainly a better description than 'discovered'...but apart from all the pop/tailor made dross, what were there any exclsuive soul plays...LOVE and can't do without you come to mind from '78 onwards, but did he have any big records back in the earlier days.

oops, sorry you said "soul" records

The problem with this thread , i.e. the debating and confirming as to what WC sounds that Dustbin Stanley " discovered " , any acknowledgemnt of them will be overshadowed by the feelings that people have for him , and the stigma of being associated with Simon Soussan .

Seeds, Outsiders, Pallbearers, Dawn...he created a sound all his own..mind you Minshull was far from blameworthy...for a bloke of his pedigree, he played some unblieveable dross..Tim Tam FFS!

Apart from FW, did Russ actually discover any real 'soul' records. Was Yvonne Baker down to him?

Being a bit of a Casino fan, I created a spreadsheet to list all my 'live' tapes and made some 'best of DJ CDs from the tapes I had using the tunes most played by that particular DJ from 77-81

Here's a few Records that appeared to be played solely or mainly by him (Please no oh that was also played by X at Venue Y coments, its just meant to be representative:-)

21st Creation - Tailgate

Danny Wagner - I lost A True Love

Dee Dee Barnes - Do What You Wanna Do

Dutch Robinson - Can't Get Along Without You

Helen Shapiro - Stop

LJ Johnson - You Keep My Temperature Rising

Marty Lewis - I Can't Do Without You

Mary Wilson - You're The Light That Guides My Way

Master Four - Love From The Far East

Patti Labelle - Loving Rules

Peggy Scott - You Got It All

Pete Warner - I Just Want To Spend My Life

Posse - Evil

Renee Pryor - BOradway

Sergio Mendes - Love Music

Four J's - Love My Love

Bees - Where Do I Go

Camotions - Motown

Checkmates - Kissin Her and Crying For You

The Intros - Stop, Look and Listen

The Moments - Hey Boy

Pallbearers - Music With Soul

Rainbow People - Living In A Dream World

Teen Turbans - Need To Be Loved

Tommy Bush - I Don't Like It

Toni Lamar - Just In The Nick Of Time

Turley Richards - I Feel Alright

DIanne Ducanne - Better Late Than Never

Seeds - Pushing To Hard

Roger K - Give Me The Love

Lockettes - Boy Next Door

Allan Reuss - Zorba

Bobs Band - Lockes Theme

Paul Peek - Moving Uptown

Ruth Lewis - That Special Way

Outsiders - Why Don't They Leave Us ALone / Backwards Upside

Some good and bad tunes in there but compared to Dickies record over the same period a lot less tracks and a lot less quality:-)

Cheers

Hey Malc I am trying to be objective in my post  ......and yes Richard was getting most of big stuff from John A in the late 70s.

That's the point about "discoveries". I know stuff did turn up in shops and stalls and some stuff was discovered that way but most of it came from dealers, Soussan, Anderson, McCutcheon etc etc.

BTW Frank Bloody Wilson also came from Soussan..... So this obsession with DJ's 'discovering' records is a bit of a misnomer. Levine can of course lay claim to "discovering" many records because he was going round junk shops in the USA and bringing back unknown records at a time when most of the rest of us got no closer to the USA than watching "The Andy Williams Show".

Some quality stuff on that list. DD Barnes for Eg was one of the best tracks played at Wigan IMHO

Also loved the Pallbearers - proper 100mph dancer in it's day.

Easy to pick out the good, Tommy Bush, Dee Dee Barnes, Marty Lewis etc but far too much pop crap in there, Rainbow People, Seeds, Camotions and Diane Ducanne F.F.S. it was embarrassing at the time and sounds worse now...

Was glad when they re-opened the Mecca, leave there at 1am and get to Wigan just as Richard was starting..... whistling.gif

Don't mind the Allnight band, but at Wigan ?? Russ just took the easy way out playing cheap pop records towards the end, Richard, Pat and Gary R were the only ones worth listening to....

Trouble is Mark, that would have involved having to play records that featured Black American artists...

whats the difference white pop soul or black rock and roll (the worse side of rnb i may add!)

sorry Russ is my hero in terms of most of the stuff he played at wigan and ive got to stick up for him

Hi Mark,

The guy helped turn an 'Underground Soul scene' into a 'Pop phenomenon' and many Soul Music fans find that hard to appreciate.

Like getting the fox to look after the chickens, he was never a 'Soul Music' lover, by his own admission.

No great sin in that in itself, but the detrimental affect that had on the 'Soul' scene in the North took years to recover.

Fortunately, some of those who were attracted to the scene, ironically because of the 'publicity' generated at Wigan, stayed around long enough to experience and enjoy some real Soul Music.

:)

That's an interesting point. Some would say that the whole WC thing did untold damage to the soul scene in this country with the split between oldies and newies, 60s v 70s, the complete neglect of things below 120 bpm and things like Muriel Day. Not for this thread but I have heard it said....when compared to others scenes such as Europe....

DD Barnes was a good Russ one, but Mark you have to admit for a guy that had a two hour set every week for eight years at a club, the list is a bit on the "thin" side even if it does contain some goodies. Does Russ really see himself as an "underdog"? :hatsoff2:

I think the telling point is that Winstanley rarely was invited to DJ anywhere other than the Casino, apart from the 'Wigan Casino Roadshow', having said that he had a vested interest in 'keeping Wigan as the 'No.1 venue'

On a side issue, does anyone know anything about one of his plays 'we're gonna party' by Detroit Sound. I've always assumed that it was some sort of tailor made thing.

Sorry, I did go for years and Russ's first spot was as good as any you'd hear all night, especially the period mid 76 to mid 77, after that until I stopped going late 78, he was ok not brilliant, but to slag him off like all of you lot are doing just proves you don't have a clue what you're talking about or have very selective memory, try listening to that tape I posted up from february 77 for a fantastic Russ spot. Want to hear Richard playing My hearts Symphony, I can post it up for you. (Russ was also first to play Judy Street by the way).

Hi Steve

He may have played 'Love Music' but Richard really did champion this every where he played in the country at the time.

I'm sorry to say that no end of rehabilitation will ever change his standing with me. The way he treated Richard and others towards the end of the Casino was shocking. Ego over any real content.

Dave, I swear to you, I went practically evey week in 1977 and nobody except Russ played Love Music, I must have half a dozen tapes with him playing it.

If you weren't a dancer at wigan you could be pretty damn critical of Russ's delivery.

As a dancer - took the rough with the smooth, but always reckoned Russ was more bothered about a heaving floor rather than the up yer ass politics of who had what etc.

Spun many a fine 'dance tune' over the years - Johnny Dynamite - The Night The Angels Cried stands out for me.

Hi Paul

Sadly Russ was one of the main instigators of much of the politics that went one at the casino, so he was very bothered about that side of it.

Pete as always I bow to your knowledge.
