Winstanley's Disoveries?

I'm not having James Coit as RW. Because I was there, I first heard this in the Morecambe/Lancaster area. bought it cheap and at the time I did a couple of spots in Mr M's in the early session before the all-nighter, played it, Searling came over and asked if he could 'borrow' it. I said he could, if he played it. in the event he didn't, but gave it to the DJ following him, who did. That's the first play at WC. I remember people singing the hookline as they flooded out in the morning. what an awful recording !

I'm sure Minshull was first to play Black Power, same night as he played Tim Tam for the first time?

The problem with this thread , i.e. the debating and confirming as to what WC sounds that Dustbin Stanley " discovered " , any acknowledgemnt of them will be overshadowed by the feelings that people have for him , and the stigma of being associated with Simon Soussan .

Edit. Nothing pos to say, say nowt.

I was there in '79, can't remember 'My Generation' being played, or a massive influx of revival Mods, I think a lot of existing NS fans reverted to Mod clothes, because it was the fashion. But then I can't recall coachloads of Slade fans accompanied by Pan's People tipping up at 'nighters just because Footsie was in the pop charts. I also love an Urban Myth.

I think it was much later, late 80, early 81 when some young mods arrived, and some of us young dudes as you were saying started wearing harringtons etc (I wore one pretty much every Saturday) but never directly a mod, in fact I was quite anti mod at that point considering they were too retro, the Saturday nights had instilled an anti oldies attitude after only going for about 3 months, ah the cockinesses of Youth. Pretty sure they did have a mod allnighter, certainly a Motown one in that period but it was empty, as many were, but the most Quadrophenia style record I remember from then was Green Onions, I remember it very well as I jumped up thinking it was Lou Pride, yes I know but I was young and new to the game, and after realising it wasn't waved my arms as if I was moaning about what they were playing but not dancing! So my vote is the Who never got played unless this Mod allnighter happened

Russ wasn't that bad in my short time there, some big old things Posse and Dee Dee Barnes being biggies on my dance floor, even things like Gene Latter And the Mary Wilson Candi Staton c/u I loved at that time. He was generally playing to a few hundred die hards so it wasn't a huge challenge for him. It was all over for me and Russ in September 1981 and he now just doesn't feature in my world, thankfully.

Yeah, quite a few local scooter clubs would turn up at that time and generally they always seemed to sit on the stage for that 'we're here now' look.

I remember Warrington Scooter Club doing the same, so I waited for my chance and robbed all the peaks to their helmets - funny watching em in the car park in the morning with their now 'shit pot' helmets on.

I can't remember which DJ Richard gave it to, to play, I know it was immediately after his set and was the first one played by the next DJ. Hope this ties in with your tape recording Pete. Edited by Dave Ward

I used to enter Mr m's via gerrys inn, pint, pool and then early session, with searling, soul twins etc. I had found a copy of James Coit and len barry- you baby, in a secondhand shop, in southport, that very same day. Both sold that night, as soon as I got there, more than likely, already known, by then. Since, led to believe James coit, to have been a soul pack record.

It's hard to remember specific weeks now, maybe the one I have was the second week it was played, because people seemed to know it by then?

1 page advert for mod allnighter in blues and soul magazine in 1980, wasn't it Prince Buster- Al Capone, that caused all the fuss. Yes you are correct but it was played on a Saturday night

One of the music mags printed a list of Russ discoveries,i'll try and find it.

John Bowie, You've Gonna Miss A Good Thing was a decent Russ spin.

He played tons tons and tons of cr@p in my time though, used to go to early sessions on a Friday too, he was the resident in my time so I heard him a lot, I do remember him playing Yum Yums Big Thing, was he the first,?? Could well be, kudos if he was.

People used to tell me that in his earlier years he was much much better, but in my time, he was a stooge for Sousaan, to get a record pressed that he could go on and make some coin, he always looked bored out of his brain on the decks.

A few others off the top of my head I know for sure that he played regular, and were regarded as his spins.

The Point Of No Return, Dusk. cr@p

Bobby Diamond, Stop. (which I think is a great record).

Joey Heatherton When You Call Me Baby.

And he deffo make James Coit, Black Power massive at the Casino, not my cup of tea, but that was a very big record in it's day.

I thought Joey Heatherton was a Richard spin, but I may be wrong (I usually am ) was it Russ that played Prince and Princess Stick Together ?

Notwithstanding the fact the Russ played some rubbish Richard did as well and "broke" and played many a white pop piece of trash (I too have same tape as Pete S where Richard plays Gary Lewis in 1974)

Back on topic, as mentioned earlier, Tobi Legend, he broke and pushed it death. I have loved it from first hearing and for that I forgive him some of his awful records at that time. Can't forgive some of sins since then, but hey ho.

ps when he played leon Thomas L-O-V-E I used to think it was called "Hello Vicky" ohmy.giflaugh.gif

So did I,

I was recording tapes quite regularly from 78 to 80 and apart from Richard Searling who was outstanding more or less throughout and Gary Rushbrooke (towards the end) I don't think RW was playing anything worse than anyone else. Think Love Hustle and Tim Tam.

But as soon as Wigan Tiffanies started I went there instead......

more Russ exclusives:

sammy lee - what goes around

servicemen - sweet magic

I'll list them as they come into my head...

I remember him playing Jay Traynor exclusively from about 77 on

Perhaps Russ's biggest discovery was not a record, but the Casino itself. Had the venue never opened what impact would it have had. Many current fans and people on here got their first real experience of the music and the scene by going to the Casino and became lifelong fans since then. Just a thought...
