Guest karen b
I wanted to be first to say a big thank you to all the attendees from far and wide who made our Boomerang 3rd Anniversary night quite special. The DJ's of the night, Cliff, Yann, Arthur and Maria O made it hard for me to stay focused on the 'door' job and I even managed to sneak in a couple of shuffles round the dance floor, my night was filled with smiles and laughs which were shared with some incredible people I am pleased to call friends,I even made a couple of new ones! I also need to say thanks to Pete for being, well, Pete, who has supported us 'quietly' from behind the scenes and in front of the bar!!!! Playlists should be up soon. Maria O
As Karen wrote, a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who ventured our to Thorne for the first anniversary that BOOMERANG actually celebrated. ...It made sense to wait 3 years for the first one, as we only run four times a year Not sure where the time went - bit of drinking, bit of dancing, took some photos and played some records - and regret not spending more time with people. Big thanks to our anniversary guest dj's CLIFF, YANN and ARTHUR - who kept me on fast forward all night, especially with King George, The Sweets and Salt & Pepper. There were also a few brave Boomerang virgins who we hope enjoyed themselves because this night does not suit all tastes, including distance travellers Audra, Paul, Helen, Michelle and Dave. Special mention to my adorable bald roadies too - thank you both for saving my energies XX A few missed faces but numbers were up, and it is very much appreciated that the regular support is still there to keep going. Honestly made an effort to put records in my box that I'd never played there before, because my playlists must be getting tedious I think. However, given that I'm more a lover than a fighter after a few pints, I succumbed to request and dedication time. Realise now that it was worth every smile! : opening time... Sandra Wright - "Midnight Affair" (Truth) Dorothy Morrison - I Can't Go Without You (Brown Door) James Walsh Gypsy Band - Cuz It's You, Girl (RCA, Australia) Beloyd - Get Into Your Life (20 Century) The Sweet Things - Don't Come Looking For Me (Date) The Spiedels - Dream Girl (Providence) Shiela Ferguson - "And In Return" (Swan) Eula Cooper - Try (Tragar) Gracie Darnell - The Bad Guys (Ruth) bit later... Holidays - Without Your Sweet Love (Top Dog C/U) Purple Mundi - Stop Hurting Me Baby (Cat) The Ascots - Just A Few Feet From The Gutter (Playboy) Guy Allen - Changes (Allen Bros.) Natural Impulse - She Went Away (Natural Impulse) Geraldine Hunt - Winner Takes All (abc) The Attractions - You Don't Know Boy (June Bug) Karmello Brooks - Tell Me, Baby (Milestone) Tommy & the Derby's - Don't Play the Role (Swing) Richard Caiton - I Like To Get Near You (Up Tight) Bottom & Company - Gonna Find A True Love (Motown) Out Of Sights - For The Rest Of My Life (Saru) The Four Voices - Your Love Is Getting Stronger (Voice) Darrow Fletcher - Changing By The Minute (Uni) The Ethics - I Want My Baby Back (Vent) The Districts - One Lover (Just Won't Do) (Nile) Jackie Wilson - Soul Galore (Brunswick) As a vinyl hugger, I'm always pleased that guys and girls are so comfortable to regularly approach the stage and ask to see a record they enjoyed. None of our guest dj's ever seem to mind this, and let's hope that continues . - After all, music for the soul is what it's really about! m ps. Most LOST PROPERTY has now been claimed by Cliff . However I have an unclaimed small silver earring (please PM me with description and address if it's yours) and Julia was still looking for her missing gold/white gold earring this morning (please PM her via member 'HOOTENANNIE'). What can I say ... Edited February 7, 2010 by Maria O Link to comment

Geoff
Not sure I can add much to what's already been said. Another great night at my favourite soul club. Music excellent as always and the great company. Good to see my good friends Paul and Helen up from London, and Michelle from March in Cambridgeshire. Thanks to Martin who did a sterling job driving from Welwyn Garden City to Holmes Chapel to pick up Audra Thomson who was going to her first soul night for a very long time. Then driving to Thorne, and discovering halfway there that there were no rear lights working on his car; fortunately brake and reversing lights were working. The fact that it was a grey and misty day didn't help. We got to the guest house at about 4.30, Martin attempted fruitlessly to sort out the electrics problem on the car, we got ready and were in the Canal Tavern by just gone 5.30. I enjoyed my meal, a Barnsley Chop, very tasty, sure the others enjoyed their dishes. Pity the Black Sheep bitter run out. They obviously need to order an extra barrel when Boomerang is on. Just gone 8 pm we went in, and Maria was on the decks, she'd only played 3 or 4 records when Audra started dancing, think it was Dream Girl. And she kept dancing for most of the evening. Arthur followed Maria, remember dancing to the Vanguards and William Powell. Must have missed the Esther Grant cover up as Mick H played that at Gloucester last week and I had danced to it, a nice bit of Crossover. Then it was Yann's first set, some nice mainly medium tempo tracks; particularly enjoyed Chubby & The Turnpikes' I Didn't Know The Inside Story, the b side of I Didn't Try, what a good doubesider. Cliff Steele followed, playing some good Crossover. Then back to Maria who played my request for Natural Impulse's She Went Away. In the car on the journey I'd played it off a CD, don't think Martin and Audra really liked it, but to me it's a most beautiful record. I danced to the Attractions' You Don't Know Boy, but was at the bar for two of my real favourites, Tell Me Baby and Don't Play The Role. Funny how that always seems to happen. And as I was in the middle of ordering a round couldn't rush to the floor. Yann followed Maria, thanks for playing my request for I'm Yours by Betty Wilson. I also remember dancing to Ordinary Joe, must have been others as well. Then it was Arthur's second set, loved dancing to Salt & Pepper, Angela Davis and the Kings Of Soul among others. I'd danced quite a bit by then, the legs beginning to get a bit tired. Cliff finished the night off, started with my request for the Earles, heard that quite a bit lately. Then he actually played something I've got, the Chimes, as he said a good way to spend £15. Unfortunately at about 12.40 Audra felt so tired that I had to take her back to the guest house, she'd never have found her way by herself, so had to make a sharpish exit without saying farewell to my friends, please accept my apologies. It was good to see so many of my friends there, Boomerang is such a friendly club. Well done Karen and Maria, and thanks to the DJs and staff of the Canal Tavern. Paul McKay
Top night! Our first visit and it was a cracker. Thanks to all involved especially Pete for showing us around Beverley and introducing us to the fantastic Nellie's (White Horse) pub - 2.5 pts of bitter, pint of Cider and a diet coke and change from £7! Gas mantle lighting and real fires in almost every room. Found the venue from the guest house without too much bother, had a cracking meal and spent the night chatting and taking in the tunes unable to dance due to ligament problems. Thanks everyone for their company and to Maria and Karen for the lovely present for my birthday, very thoughtful girls! Hope to get back soon! Link to comment
