Art Deco Buildings

And this house is one of many in my Mum & Dad's road in New Malden, Surrey. I always loved these 'ship houses' when I was little - Justin & I were sorely tempted to buy one 10 years ago, but he couldn't face living quite so close to the outlaws :D

post-8338-044635200 1277750278_thumb.jpg

Fantastic, wish I could afford to buy one, I know New Malden quite well, used to work in Surbition, Hinchley Wood and Stoneleigh.

When I were a lad there was one art deco house along this long.....long street called The Heights in Northolt. All teh rest were traditional 1930s type semis but this beaut looked like a small cinema  Went back there about 5 years ago and all the 1930s houses were still standing almost unchanged for 40+ years but that art deco one was gone  and a 1980s little box stood in its place :(

The Hyde Park Cinema in Headingley , Leeds .

A Grade II listed building , the Hyde Park still has many original features , including gas lighting , a decorated Edwardian balcony , and a piano and organ . It is the only gas lit cinema remaining in use in the UK . The ornate gas lamp outside the entrance is also Grade II listed .

Not exactly art deco , but a pleasure on the eye .

My office building on New Oxford Street ( I like to think of it as London's very own Flatiron Building). Really a 'Modernist' deisgn but a large nod to Art Deco detailing.............

Commonwealth+House.jpg

Art Deco & Modernist were pretty good bedfellows, bit like Brad and Angelina..............

It belongs to the Belgian Military and is called "Mess Continental", totally refurbished only re-opened end April, right on sea front, we had a 1 bed apartment, place has a great restuarant and bar :D

I'm not sure whether the Isokon flats in North London count as Deco or Modernist or a bit of both, but they are round the corner from my office base and I can't cycle past without looking every time.

I went on one of the 'Open House' tours a few years ago and they are tiny inside, mind.

The first 'photo is a proper one, i.e. nicked from Google Images, the second I took with my camera 'phone. A few days before I ran over it with my car (don't ask).

I love the Isokon flats-they were very run down until a few years ago though. As you say, the flats are tiny inside but I seem to remember that the original tenants were encouraged to share some spaces and live semi-communally?

Yes, my idea of hell.

After the refurbishment, a few of the flats were made available for keyworkers and I thought about applying. But they were just too tiny. And the thought of all that communal living that went on the past would make me shudder every time I crossed the threshold.

Anyway, as we're onto transport on this excellent thread, how about this weird and wonderful little car? Designed by one of my favourites, Norman Bel Geddes. Father of the lovely Barbara. Was never mass-produced and looks quite claustrophobic, but appealing too.

Took these last Sunday whilst tavelling on the underground from Uxbridge to St Pancras. Of course the trains are overground this part being the extension built in the 1930s, hence the art deco type architecture.

Here's London's jewel in the crown IMO. Grade II listed exterior and interior, covering 2 acres in central London. Even the bogs are Art Deco.

It's open to the public and guided tours can be arranged in advance. Go and take a look - they don't bite!

Broadstairs is always worth a trip anyway but especially to see Morelli's Ice Cream Parlour.

I want that van! And the dog!

Beautiful pics. What about some of Gaudi´'s Catal탡n modernist creations like the Casa Batllo in Barcelona? It's hard to think that people like de Velde, Gaud탭, Morris and Rennie MacIntosh were all exponents of the same movement.

I know the picture of this building isn't very good (it was derelict and vandalised and this picture was taken in 1994) as it is taken not long before the building was demolished. It is a picture of Bishop Auckland Odeon built in 1938 and I used to go a lot when I was a bairn. It sadly closed in 1983

I used to be a Freemason and our Lodge held it's quarterly meetings in this palatial building. If we were lucky we'd get the splendid Indian Temple to hold meetings in!

Nah, a lot of people think that, but it's not the case. Once you've handed in your resignation and cancelled the standing order at the bank for your monthly dues, it's all over - no more funny handshakes, no more secret signs, no more wearing an apron... ph34r.gifrolleyes.gif

Great thread with some lovely photos.

We've had a few Odeon cinemas, naturally, so here the former one in Scarborough. It's now the Stephen Joseph Theatre - probably familiar to Richard Hawley fans as the cover shot for the Coles Corner album.

Despite being an internationally renowned theatre and home to Alan Ayckbourne, it's future looks uncertain thanks to the recent spate of cuts to arts funding.
