On me way to pick the missus up about 8pm last night and I was trying to get the footie on the radio and happened across a Soul show on Radio Sheffield presented by Steve White.

A very enjoyable show it was and some good interviews etc, the lad who put Samantha's on was good listening.

Will be tuning in next week.

I listen when I can including last night for 2 hours-even an interview with Mr Binstanley claiming he could not Play Ruby Andrews and Martha Reeves "No one there" at the Casino because they were too slow -but he had them in his play box FFS !!

The show is on 7pm to 10 pm every wednesday-I think John Kane may be on next week.

The show itself is not bad, however, it is made so by the quality of the requests from the listeners, therefore this is the reason that there are mainly well known tunes on and few rare obscure tunes played. Steve White seems like a decent bloke , but he is young and led by his homeboys in Barnsley, which although a soulful place, is not the epicentre of soul music, northern or otherwise. If you listen regularly I'm sure you'll find the constant references to T'arn and its clubs, DJ's and events somewhat tiresome, indeed there has been a constant stream of his Barnsley crew as guests each week, Yocki has been on at least three times and nice guy though he is, he hasn't got the voice or language skills for radio. I beleve that Smokey Robinson is a guest in the coming weeks which is the sort of interview I for one will make every effort to tune in to. Keep up the good work Steve but try realise that Soul music exists outside of Barnsley. Anyway I'm off to Oil Me Booits befor ah teks mi whippets fer a walk! Spread the Faith.

Although I'm not from Barnsley, I would guess that based on number of residents in the town and the number of residents into Rare Soul, it must be one of the most saturated 'soul towns' in England.

From the undertones of the original post / reply , its' originator would prefer a radio broadcasting operative or guest , to speak in perfect English , ensuring correct pronunciation at all times , a la the stalwart and denizen of British broadcasting , Alvar Liddell .

The show's presenter and, its' recent guests all have a background in / on the NS scene , and what comes over from / during it by both , is an honest enthusiasm for the music and the scene . Steve's show might not be Sony Award winning material , but it is enjoyable - and that is all what counts .

I first met Steve at Bridlington at the first Spa (SNTD2) Weekender, I liked him instantly (rhymes with Binstanley)

What struck me was his un-bounding enthusiasm for all things to do with SOUL music from the 60s to current day stuff-you'll find him in the Modern room a lot as well.

His main passion is for Motown and "The BBC" Tag gives you a lot of room and opens a lot of doors in to artists that lesser station DJs would not even get a sniff at-and he can handle it well.

Remember you heard this first-Steve is headed for National Radio and will become a household name and what better champion to get our music played weather its a £2 cheapie or a £2,000 in-demander !

The BBC sent him on an outside broadcast to witness the blowing up of the old Blackburn Meadows Power Station cooling towers near Meadowhall - now thats a true claim to fame-- in a Shopping Centre Car Park at 2.30 am on a Sunday morning with half of Sheffield and Rotherham stood there by the way ! So he has credentials as well.

. Steve's show might not be Sony Award winning material , but it is enjoyable - and that is all what counts .

Did you know Radio Presenters can NOMINATE THEMSELVES for this award Godfrey ? I'm not talking about Chris Evans or in your case Desmond Carrington- but people who have shows on smaller local or Internet Stations -costs just £100 to do it -they can then brag that they are "Sony Award nominee's " sounds good until you know the truth behind it !!!

and as for the dig about tarn yes we are a small backwoods town but with 20 or more djs young n old male or female (wont name names for fear of missin someone out) who all dj regularly locally or further afield, and several promoters of events plus many seriously addicted vinyl junkies(collectors)

Steve is a good radio jock, we can't all be Radio 4 type presenters. I hardly speak at all on my internet show and just let the music run but if I did talk more then so be it.

I love living in Tarn, never lived in a place so drenched in soul before. Newcastle was okay but mostly full of modern fans.

Sounds kinda like Radio Oxford's soul show. Their guy loves sorting through the week's CDs for previously unreleased tracks, but the rest of the time it's really predictable 'listener's request' stuff. Every week you're guaranteed one James Brown, one Otis Redding, a Sam & Dave, an Aretha Franklin, and either a Diana Ross & the Supremes or a solo Ross and a Rossless Supremes...

Radio Cambridgshire's show may be only an hour, but he crams in much more of the good stuff (IMO...)

Hi ,I think you should try radio 3 or radio 4 or maybe classic FM if its shakespear your after mate ,if its people who are passionate about northern soul know how to fill a venue and give everyone a good night ,and is a dam good DJ allso ,you wont go far wrong with yocki , Ill leave you with a few big fancy words to ponder over , BOMBASTIC IN THE EXUBERANCE OF YOUR OWN VERBOSITY

Manchester may have been the mother that gave birth to the golden child that was the soul club scene , which then grew up into the NS scene , but Yorkshire was - and still is - one of the key family members who played am important part in the upbringing and development of that child .

So you agree with my opinion then , and I with yours , Yorkshire folk have indeed played a key role in development of our music and continue to do so, therefore let me enlighten you, my statement of " We built the Faith " does not refer solely to Manchester, but is an age thing which means my generation built the scene, that these people, who came from all over the UK, many from Yorkshire, did so

in an era well before Wigan, which incidentally, is now part of Greater Manchester , many of the posters on here and indeed on the radio show seem to have only experienced the scene from the Wigan era .

Your memory better than mine, remember now kelly temple as well, didn't think he was as good as the two afore mentioned, IMO, so didn't listen every week, plus around the time he had his spell there I was usually on my way to a gig . Oh for the good old days.

I remember it because he had a feature on the show called "soul professor", where you picked your favourite two tunes and had them played on the radio. You had to drop off your own records in the week before the show, and pick them up on the monday. I think it was the summer of '80 i had my choices played, which were, Competition 'aint nothing - Little Carl Carlton, and If I could see you now - Sunny & the Sunliners.
