I right thumper and a fabulous key change in the instrumental break. Played this out a few times to mixed responses. I do recall it getting a thumbs up from Karl Heard at an Attic night. Both sides are good (can't remeber flip title on uk mercury, not at home at moment) but No Matter What You Do shades it as a potential dance floor tune. I beleive that Her version of I Just Can't Get Enough Of You was a played sound way back in the day. There's a credible version by the Apollas on Loma but Lesley's version has a lot more 60's thump. I'm too young to to rembember this being played but at the age of 15 I picked up an EMI with this on that had seen a lot of wear before I owned it. Garethx Posted June 13, 2010 Share Posted June 13, 2010 (edited) Right at the tail end of her pop career she recorded a couple of singles with Gamble & Huff and Thom Bell. "I'll Be Standing By" was written by G&H with Cindy Scott. The other side, "Look The Other Way" was written by none other than Mikki Farrow! "Standing By" would be a great record with Cindy Scott behind the mike. "Take Good Care" from the same sessions also has a good Philly backing track. Although she was never a soul singer in any sense I feel she's a somewhat under-rated vocalist. The limitation on her career was the massive success of her first single, the pretty naff "It's My Party". Producers tended to multi-track her voice as on the smash hit single whereas by the end of the 60s it was a far stronger instrument. She certainly got to record some great songs: "Maybe I Know" by Ellie Greenwich & Jeff Barry, and an earlier version of The Inspirations "What Am I Gonna Do With You" written by Gerry Goffin & Russ Titelman. Not sure if it wasn't album only? Thought I recalled flip to No Matter What You Do was ok, just checked to see it's I Won't Love You Anymore, which I now notice is the A side of UK Mercury 889. Guest Simon Posted June 14, 2010 Share Posted June 14, 2010 'You didn't look 'round' off the 'My town, my guy & me' could possibly work, it's got a sorta 'Jennifer Wells - Dining in Chinatown' kinda feel to it, also 'Coolin' no foolin' off 'Boys, Boys, Boys' album is interesting & could be a possible spin. Think we've spun pretty much every decent Lesley Gore track at Da Doo Ron Ron over the years, 'Maybe i know', 'Wonder boy', 'Run Bobby Run', 'No matter what you do' are all regular spins, 'California nights', 'I don't care', 'It's my party', 'You don't own me', 'Treat me like a lady', 'Sunshine, lollipops & rainbows' all get spins also & there's plenty of others that escape me.
