Went to see the film at the Empire, Leicester Sq on Saturday night, overall it was an enjoyable 90 minutes :glare:

Some of it certainly reminded me of being 17 and back in the early 70's.

Then again some of it was, as they say, ' artistic license' , true for most entertainment.

But it's not a film about 'Northern Soul' , it is a film about 'boy meets girl' set in the 70's with a background of Northern Soul, as such it was brilliant to hear some of the music played out in a venue that wouldn't normally hear it.

I'll get the DVD when it's available and play it every 10 years or so just to remind me of what it was like to be 17 and naive and slim and full of the joy of hearing certain tracks for the first time :D

Burst out laughing when I saw your comment Malc...................................but I have been to London this week..........................and I do own a grey suit...........and I am about the same build.

Not a good defence Your Honour.

Steve.

Unless you can provide a written alibi , signed by several reliable witnesses Steve , I am afraid the evidence is stacked against you :D

Yet another own goal on the promotions side...

Not sure about the thought thats gone into the styling of the dancers for a film set in 1973....

50s style and mod style makes no sense to me... Its more like Grease meets the blues brothers...

Young dancers male and female with some good looking kids would have been more on the money...

Many many years work goes into putting a film together and time and time again the promotional side looks like its been put together in a few minutes with little thought for impact...

It lacks the Va va vooooooooooooooooooooom that would really draw you in.... IMVHO...

Just a thought... :D

I saw the film on Saturday.....I was desperate to enjoy it....unfortunately I was disappointed.....most of the dancing scenes were the out takes from This England......the script was poor and was crying out for some humour.......most of the characters were completely unbelievable.......the wait continues for a movie we can all get behind and enjoy.......I won't hold my breath.......

That is just the f---king pits. Do they know no embarrassment..:hatsoff2:

What is there to be embarrssed about (dancing to records ? )

It was just the same in Blackburn town centre when TSWONS was 1st shown at King George's.

I have seen people do far more embarrassing things happen at nighters (me inclued) than just have a dance.

It wasnt great.

He did try to sound convincing about the soul scene, but did cringe when talking about rooms full of 50 year olds.

At that poiint I turned over before I had a stroke.

If you had stayed with it Mikey he did add "but they can still move". I thought he came across pretty respectful of the current scene. He was obviously a bit nervous and anyone who has been interviewed live on national telly knows how nerve racking it can be and that you don't always say exactly what you want to!

I'm sure the members of the public passing by the cinema were taking notes about the clothes the dancers were wearing so's when they got home they could come on a forum and say bloody hell, they weren't even making those trousers in 1973.

Soulboy the Movie

Well after much trumpeting and waiting I finally got a chance to see the movie. We went as a family consisting of my self, my wife Carol and my 17 year old son Zak the venue was the Showroom & Workstation smack bang in the centre of Sheffield and we were in the wonderful company of "The Tarn Posse" who had come mob handed from the beautiful metropolis we know as Barnsley.

Anticipation was the best way to describe how I felt as the curtains parted and the lights went down, Soul Source had already set the stage and I didn't quite know what to expect, I think every one was conscious about the possible impact the film could have and no one wanted to leave feeling let down or used?

I will do my best to critique the movie in a moment but first I will say that we all enjoyed the film and none of us felt cheated or used and that was a big relief.

The Movie

The plot is described as a coming-of-age drama set in the 1970s Northern Soul underground music scene.

I found that the script was either overambitious or that the director was unskilled enough to explore some of the characters introduced within the sub plots. The sub story of "Fish shop Bobby" was half hearted to say the least and left me scratching my head as to why hint at this little vignette as it started quite strong and fizzled out as if it had run out of allotted time? The acting and direction was quite confusing at this stage, we where presented with a credible performance from Joanne Hartley who played Monica the 'battered" chip shop wife (sorry), she navigated quite capably giving a good performance yet her co star in the shape of Brian McCardie was nothing more than a clich pantomime villain, I was reminded of the butcher from The League of gentlemen.

Our lead man and hero Martin Compston played Soulboy Joe McCain giving a more than adequate performance coming across as a likable lad yet there was hints at boredom yet know real show of teenage angst. Nichola Burley, his reason d'ªtre gave an uncomfortable and unconvincing performance as the Northernsoul "Vamp" who inspired our Joe to become a Soulboy, I am not too sure if this was down to the bad direction or the bad script?

Felicity Jones played Mandy Hodgson the "ugly duckling" girl next door, frustrated artist and Casino regular, her character was over cluttered yet Felicity Jones more than coped with some excellent acting resisting the trap of over egging the pudding, she came across a as likable character and it was great to have quality acting amongst other flat and ill equipped actors who where struggling with a scrip that some times appeared to be written by four or five different people?

This is where the film falls flat on its bottom a bit, there is such disparity between the actor's skills and the script not quite knowing what kind of film it is, we go from whimsical to serious without any real substance and this relegated the movie to a rainy afternoon on DVD.

Would I recommend the movie, sadly no, certainly not for a special trip to the pictures.

I think this is a fun film, on the Northernsoul side I would have to write "Could have tried harder", the mix of old clips and new was well done yet some times it came across as the Kids from Fame, at one time we see a Blues Brothers type jump up and touch your toes.

The dance off at the end was probably the most unforgivable own goal of the movie.

Simon Cuerden

Soulboy the Movie by Zak Cuerden (17)

Upon first seeing the trailer for the film Soulboy the excitement felt by all the northern soul fans about a film that captured the magic that was felt at Wigan casino was unmatchable. Finally a film that could describe what northern soul meant to that generation. The film on a whole was very predictable, and seemed to be just a big build up to the final dance off. In my opinion the film did not know what kind of film it wanted to be and seemed to stray away from the initial goal of capturing the feel of Wigan casino, in the end it did not do this. The film on the whole was a good watch but that did not stop the disappointment by the Wigan veterans after being promised a film that could be based on them, but unfortunately the film concentrated on the love triangle instead of the music on which the film boasted it would be. But despite the all the failed promises, the film had a good mixture of comedy and seriousness. One thing that I must praise Soulboy for is the range of the audience I sat in the cinema at the age of 16 being equally entertained as my nearly 50 year old father. Soulboy will not go down in the record books for being a revolutionary film but it also will not go down for being the worst film of all time.

The cinema was pretty empty, There were about 13 "Soulies" counting The Tarn Posse and my family then another 10 in the cinema making a grand total of 23, that's a lot of empty seats.

23 bums on seats

Went to see the film last Friday, which was enjoyed by a group of us. It runs for a week in Belfast.

Thought it was well attended with a mixed range of ages, l think the QFT holds around 120 folk.. all seats sold..

Its about how to promote Mr Smith, generate a buzz, get the juices flowing and get bums on seats...

You said it, passing public..... Not paying public who were impressed enough to go and see the film....

The clothing comment was my own " 50s style and mod seems an odd mix to me "

Time and time again the promotions are done for this movie and fall on their arse... Someone must be in control of the promtional side??? whoever that is, dont give up your day job

Its on at the cornerhouse Manchester.... Maybe a chance to make my own mind up at last...

Steve - are you referring to the dancers outside Leics Square rather than the film itself? Must admit, Keb and Chris's style of clothing next to the Mod guy would send a confusing general public message when put alongside the film and its fashions set in 1974.

Can't understand people taking the piss out of that clip, I absolutely love it more every time I see it, not so much for the Northern dancers, which is a bit of a cheesy publicity stunt but for the members of the public in the background being prepared to drop everything and join in just because music starts playing. Don't watch the dancers, watch the background.

p.s. If Keb Darge dances like my Dad then I wish my Dad had tought me a few steps.

Went to see this last night and i was toatally shocked! Having read the script 5 years ago, i alkready knew it would be slack, BUT, thought i would give it a chance as some people on here are giving it good reports. MISTAKE!

Jesus christ, this film is just f---king diabolically crap. What shocked me more, is that so called soul lovers and Wigan lovers , could like this rubbish!

I went with 5 actors (good ones) to see it and without even going into the crap costumes, the same extras waliking through scenes cos they couldnt afford enough, the main guys trouisers being too long, the f---king appalling dancing, the fat extras dancing in the background etc, it was just the worst ACTING we had seen in a long , long time! It was so bad it was offensive.

The two bad guys with stupidly deep voices,, the crap dancer bad guy with the pot belly and pills in every pocket, so that when he falls over they all fall on the floor! The 30 year old Danielle Henry cast as a teenager! The f---king ridiculous dance off at the end thats decided on the worst spins you have ever seen! Im still in shock from the film, but more from the people on here who can possibly like this stupid rubbish. Forget the Northern angle, its just one of the worst acted, written and directed films i have seen..REALLY!

THe 3 guys on hidden trampettes who jump up in the dance scene, touching there toes like a scene from FAME.! The badly cut original footage (thats orange for some reason) that we have seen a million times before, that switches from busy Wigan to empty hall. The 'line dancing 'scene:ohmy: ! f--king hell!

The scene where the girl OD's that just a rip from the 80's tv play and bloody ridiculous to boot! Did this film have no advisors on it? If it did, they were crap!

The BREAK DANCER doing turtles on his back! Alfie Allen doing an impression of Martin Clunes! The record shop guy doing a crap 'Shameless' caricature. In fact thats why the acting is so awful, its all 1 and 2 dimensional caricatures and i cant believe that a director could cast so badly and direct even worse.

This film just has NO DRAMA, its UNSEXY, and just plain BORING!

I see why it has no release now. Its like a bad student film. Dont even bother with it when it comes out on DVD very soon, its annoyingly bad!
