BUTCH'S ARTHUR WALLACE 45 - INFO?

Recommended Posts

Just woken up after an excellent nite at the 100 Club - some excellent sets played!!

One record which grabbed my attention is being played by Butch at the mo - all I could find out about it is that it's by Arthur Wallace (I guess that's how it's spelt). Anyone know any details on it (title, label etc?). Sorry about vagueness of detail here, but when I asked Butch about it while he was on, the only answer I got (with a smile) was "Arthur Wallace"!! It was too dark to see the labels on the decks, so that didn't help either!! What I can tell you it's that it's a neat organ-lead male vocal at about the same pace as style as "Sweete'n" by Wilbur Reynolds.

It was Butch's second spin in his 2 - 2.30am spot.

Thanks - any help, as always, appreciated......

Gene

This is a scan of the only other known copy (?) which belong to Andy Rix (retired fron the Northern scene?!!) A couple of years ago he was offered £4K for it, so as JM would say "what price now"!

Did it sound like this?

Blimey!!

I need to get out more. That's just got me jumping round the front room. And it's a lot more exciting than The Poseidon Adventure.

Cheers for posting that one up Hippo.

Hippo,

That sure is the one!!! Many thanks for posting that here - made me a really happy man you have, more so knowing it will be the only other chance of hearing it!!! Presume Butch has the only other known copy. Are you the lucky man who got Andy's copy?

Tony - I was sitting at a table in front of the bar. Sorry I missed you; how many beers is that I owe you now for missed ops?

I'm just waiting for someone to jump in with the full story...where are you :)

Was sunbathing in Dave Ferguson's back garden ;-)))

Rob Thomas is playing Andy's copy (which is a real one)

It came from the states and originally cost 50cents, traded, copied ( I had one given to me 3 years ago but sold it last year) then sold/traded to Andy Rix..

I did hear that someone else was playing one of the copies with a scan of the label on it?!!!

Personally I think the records shit :-)

Scrambled brain says possibly right in saying the below

"Was "discovered" on a website, where the site owner had a sound clip and described it as the "worst soul record ever heard" " ??

Have to say can't agree with that desrciption at all, find it most enjoyable imo:)

Yeah, Brian said that, I agree with him :-)

Couldn't possibly say who's playing it under a fake scan as I may be wrong!

fair one:)

"fake scan" comes up quite often nowadays

noticed how now a lot of scans are done so they are now unprintable?

dishonest, underhand, cheating paying soul fans??

thoughts??

Now there's a good thread Mick what exactly do people think of the Yate all nighters?

a) Second rate Wigan wanna be allniter in a Gloucestershire backwater?

or

cool.gif The Grandfather of the Modern day Northern soul scene (As opposed to the Oldies only scene)

John

F###ing great allnighter. Did Dave Thorley get the inspiration for Stafford by going to Yate?? And of course watching the demise of Wigan at the same time.

When the Casino was leaning more towards the established sounds, Yate offered a great venue to 'air' new discoveries, from both 60s and 70s.

And in the old venue, you could have a swim too. And it was a bloody site warmer than the pool at Cleethorpes!

Johnny, I have got a tape of Soul Sam at Yate in either 77 or 78. It sounds like it was recorded alongside a huge pop can filled with angy bees, but it has some good tunes on. AND listen to the deafening claps to Village of Tears.

I will do you a copy and pass it on to Janine. I reckon you will love it.

Gene , you may well have more opportunities to have a listen as I'm sure it's on a

Goldmine CD, I'll have a look when I get home, it could be that "rare soul heaven" I told you about. Don't remember Butch playing it , mind you saturday night was a

long time ago for my memory ! LOL

Yate was my first "main" all nighter, used to think it was great. Didn't attend that

often but gotta say don't remember much 70's being played. Is my memory shot

to pieces?

Can you do a copy of the tape for me Mikey ?

Yes i know i wasn't saying it was the father of the Modern scene that would have to be the Mecca but without Yate would the impetus have been there for Dave to get involved at Stafford and would 100 club have taken the roads it did? I'm not saying that the 100 was neccessarily a result of Yate but the inner sanctum cliques were remarkably simliar ;o))

John

Obviously speaking from the viewpoint of a spotty 16/17 year old who didn't really know any of the cool dudes back then ;o)

Dave will bring the tape down to Soul in the City. Is it next Wednesday? If you promise to play my record. He he.

Johnny. I will give Janine a copy to take up to Cleethorpes with her. It isnt great recording, (are there any from nighters??) but it is a nice 'historical' tape. AND it was the first allnighter I ever went to. Christmas/New year 77/78. Cant remember exact date

know this thread has diverted somewhat, but my best memory of Yate, cant remember date due to old age and chemical imbalance, was after driving down from Manchester with Kev Smith, Mark Andrew and Rick Warburton pulling onto car park and noticing 2 well groomed young men sat in their car Kevin offered them a can by launching it out of our car window whereupon it promptly severely dented their car door. Neither even blinked! I wonder to this day what their interest was in an allnighter ????

On the subject of Arthur's 45, and I am sure that Nick Brown has one doesn't he?, I did speak with Craig Moorer in the US a few years back about getting it and he said that he'd had a few of them in but sold all of them off cheap as he didn't rate it and couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. Anyone confirm?

99.9% sure Nick doesn't have a copy of it, if he has he has never played it out

I went around to Andy's on Monday night and he still has it. He sure there is only his and Butch's copies known at the moment.

He has 'retired' from the Northern scene becasue he "can't be arsed". I asked if he was letting owt go and he said no becasue he intends to smash all his records to bits and then form the bits into a Roman style mosaic on his patio!!

Andy Rix's retired!?! I am not happy!!!!! He has always been one of my fave DJ's, despite his resemblance to that character out of Ren & Stimpy (lol) and did a blinding set at the Plinston when he came down for us. Please tell me this isn't true :-( If your reading this Andy drop me a line mate as i would certainly have you behind the decks again at the Plinston.

If he does smash them for a mosaic surely a huge mosaic arse would be more appropraite and a symbolic gesture?!?!?? I'll get the door......

Yate was probably the most underated & most influential nighter ever IMO the toons that travelled oop north & then were assumed to have been played there first were numerous. And yes, I agree with John with the Yate, Stafford, 100 Club connection, the Southern Soul club certainly has made its mark on the scene.

The football matches on the dance floor were ok too, not being allowed in the bog was a bit of a downer tho', think there was a board meeting on !!!.

Yes, I'm going to have this story hanging over my head forever, aren't I? In my defense I got what was a very fair trade to me at the time, which was nowhere near £4000 quid. I'm happy to see that the story hasn't changed over the years though. I DID buy the 45 for 50 cents, I did call it the worst soul record ever and I did trade it to someone who later sold it to Andy Rix. As I recall, and remember I wasn't in the UK when Andy started playing it, Andy was first given an acetate while the previous owner held the original. I don't know when Andy got the original or what happened to the acetate. I also do not have a copy of it myself, though I would now like to have two: one for my Georgia soul archive and one to sell.....quickly.

Other information: I have spoken directly with the man who owned the label. He only has bluegrass records left, the pressing plant is still in operation though only presses CDs and has no vinyl, the Artist hasn't been found, though I had some leads that went cold years ago and I think that's about it. I do wish I had been holding onto Georgia soul records at that point, but don't really feel bad about letting it go.

Brian Poust

p.s. I appreciate the label scan. It's better quality than the one I had made myself at the time.
