ABOUT THE BANDS...

IMPERIAL SURFERS (Madrid)

Hailing from Madrid, the Imperial Surfers started as a canonic surf band some years ago just to start getting on a more specifically R&B-Frat vein. One of Spain's most funny-to-see bands are coming for the first time to Barcelona, with a special repertoire including some frantic R&Blueish stuff to keep the floor boiling.

THE EXCITEMENTS (Barcelona)

Our city's brand new sensation, this seven piece explore through mid-to-late 60s R&B, Soul & early funk sounds with the delighting voice of singer kakau valls, and the savouir faire of guitar player and band leader Adri  Gual (already on Los Walkysons, The Fab Ottomans and the Kongsmen; to name a few bands he's been involved with).

ABOUT THE DJS...

ROGER BANKS (UK)

"From being introduced to soul music in Cleethorpes via the dizzy heights of Grimsby Town FC in the mid 70's, the soul bug well and truly bit by 1977 when I became a regular at the Winter Gardens Soul Nights/Allnighters and Alldayers and decided to venture further a field in search of this magical music. Out with the thumb as well as jumping trains and rides in the back of ice cream vans to various Allnighters up and down the country resulted.

By 1978 the vinyl collecting bug as well as persistently annoying local DJ's resulted in DJ spots around Grimsby and Cleethorpes. I became good friends with the late Nev Wherry as well as Son of Sam (Jonathan Woodliffe) who's coach trips took me further a field and enhanced my reputation as an 'IDIOT'. When my parents moved to Lincoln, I became friends with local collector Graham Coates as well as the legendary 'Jim & Soap' duo. I was regularly in attendance towards the end of the Casino and saw both the good and bad sides of the music that was on offer at this time. This strengthened my taste and collection towards harder more cutting edge raw 60's soul/R & B - there were no barriers then - if it was good it got played (60's mafia).

It then became an obsession with weekends in the 80's dominated by resident DJ spots at Warrington, Bradford, Loughborough being a resident DJ for Steve Croft. I then started to get bookings for Mod/R & B events because of the type of music that I was playing and the reputation I was getting for my drunken exploits!!! Bookings at Weekenders then followed as well as overseas where I was told I was a leg-end or could they have meant 'legend'(!). On one occasion at the Mousetrap a young enthusiastic Japenese fella congratulated me on my spot by telling me "Oh Mr Banks, you make me crap" - I really think that what he was saying was I made him clap!!!

After various moves around the country as Mr Top Man, I decided in the early 90's to turn my hobby/obsession into my business and R & B Records was born. A lengthy dispute then followed between myself and that other bloke who calls himself R & B Records! This dispute was finally put to bed in the summer of 2008 when me and that other bloke had it out, rolling around the floor at his Six Hills NUTS Weekender. Obviously, I was the victor and that other bloke's seersucker jacket took a pounding.

To this day he still insists on booking me for his events!"

Became a Mod in the early 80's while at school & have never really grown out of it.

Started putting clubs on in 1990 with a few friends under the name Teh Hipster Image RnB Club. In the mid 90's started DJing with my mate Mike Parry at a club we did called The Sound Suite & later Shaken - we played mainly 60's funk, boogaloo and soundtracks. Around 2005 we started The Pow Wow Club playing most genres of black 50's/60's music, leaning heavily towards RnB. Can't wait to play at the Boiler & am honoured to have been asked.

I started going to rockin' events in the 80s. At that time I was living in south of France not too far to Bcn. I love and collect a wide range of musical things: lot of r&b, blues,twisted rockers, instros, and stupid stuff! during these last years, I have been djing at places such as the rockabilly raves, Hembsby weekenders and numerous gigs in Europe.

Thanks very much to everyone coming to our 7th Anniversary Weekender.

Special thanks go to Roger & Jenny Banks, as well as to Gav Arno for their spectacular selections, as well as for their great friendly approach . And of course, to Thierry for such a great comeback @ our club.

Thanks a lot for coming from so far to Scott & Jamie (London), as well as the cool Portuguese crew led by Jozé and Leah, and italian all-time buddies such as Claudio and Scasso.

Great playlists backed by two astonishing live bands (The Excitements and Imperial Surfers) got people dancing during both nights.

Great 60s Soul, Great 50s & 60s R&B and selections including some Early Funk, some Ska & Bluebeat, some Doo Wop and some X over stuff as well.

As said, thanks must go to everyone who came for making possible such a special anniversary.

the Boiler is coming back September the 11th @ Barcelona's JazzRoom with more Rhythm & Soul stuff.
