Russ Winstanley had it in what 77 or 78 huge tune and issued on Tamla Motown every one had a copy even the kid sister.

Now Ward Burton hatsoff2.gif

Have to agree. It was issued on Tamla Motown because it was a huge tune all over the Northern scene, and after the three before eight was probably the most recognised tune associated with Russ in that period.

As in donkey's years you mean 81' ish

The U.K. Tamla copy was released around '79.

It was certainly an anthem on the Scooter Scene mid-80s (when I first started going scooter rallies etc), and should imagine well before that on the Northern Scene.

Are you referring to non-soulies as such, because it certainly became known my lot's more folk outside the scene through media attention to the price he paid for it.

Or maybe that it became a KFC anthem

Whats the point of this thread??

K B only made a big tune bigger at the time because he paid stupid money for a tune that when all said and done is on a "Major" label.

The Americans dont press a button unless it gets pressed at least a thousand times (the button that is).

IMHO somebody somewhere has a shite load of these kicking around in a brown box on a floor and dont even know it.

Just a theory of mine.

You don't subscribe to the story that Gordy ordered the records be destroyed and Frank should stick to producing? The car park story?

Got an acetate of this in the early 70's from Les McCutcheon that I believe came from Simon Soussant (well documented about 6 years ago on John Manships website) has all details on label except who sang it !! It was years later when listening to Richard Searling on Red Rose Radio (circa 1989!! I had been off the scene for some time bringing up a family and starting a wholesale business!! needs must) that I finally found out who sang it!! I also got the black boot on In Records giving credit to Eddie Foster as the Artist sent to me by Les about a couple of years later (mid 70's) but he still wouldn't tell me the real artist!! finally picked up a Tamla Motown british demo later that year (89/90) although that had been deleated for ages still got the Acetate but demo sold!! Love it or hate it!! it is an anthem and will always be part of the history of Northern Soul!!! ATB John

Forgive me Dave, I went to the Casino only 4 times, then it shut. So did Russ Discover the 3 before 8? I thought the next biggest Casino record after 3/8 was Gerri Grainger.

yeah..Top of the World in the 80s after Clifton Hall, Cleethorpes, Darlington Dolphin, Keele..don't think there's been a year of my adult life where I havn't been to an All-Nighter. It's just a record that never really stuck till later.

I 'discovered' Gerri Grainger, or rather, Brad from Burnley discovered it then sold it to me for £2 in '74. Co-incidentaly I also had Tobi Legend long before it went big - I first heard Howard Earnshaw play it in a pub in Huddersfield very early on, maybe around '72/'73 and Kegsy from Bradford discovered Dean Parrish round about the same time.........

On The FW issue

Its a bloody great dancer thats been done to death like any other great record to the point where we become Snobs about it. I suppose like most big oldies.

I love hearing "Condition red" out at a venue once in awhile because it reminds me of great days when I was young! But I wouldnt want to hear it every week!

im with chalky on this one, the bones of this thread were picked clean by the vultures a long time ago.

there are ONLY TWO COPIES OF SAID RECORD....FACE THE TRUTH and thats not said in oneupmanship fashion either...ITS FACT.

YES it was booted and legitimately released in the mid/late 70's, dependant on which item you bought in chronological order...boot 1st - tmg 2nd.

you can take whatever analytical view you like about what was paid for this record, be it 97 or 2009, but it set a precedent for record collecting on the northern scene...it wasnt responsible for hyping the value of millions of other records at the same time, the fact is a lot of other northern soul tunes were expensive then....and still are now, infact some have greatly increased in value as the collectors and connoisuers have established without doubt that certain items definitely exist in only small quantities, even single figures.

SO...do i love you stands on its merits as an obscenely rare artifact, wether you like the record itself or not...if it were an antique it would be housed in a museum, such is its value....but its not, AND RIGHTLY IT GOT PLAYED ON THE NORTHERN SCENE ALONGSIDE EVERY OTHER RECORD WE CHERISH, BECAUSE IT HAS THAT SOUND AND BEAT INSTANTLY RECOGNISABLE TO EVERY FAN OF NORTHERN SOUL MUSIC....IN THE 70'S WE ALL DANCED TO IT WITH NO INHIBITIONS....35 YEARS AGO WE DIDNT HAVE SOULSOURCE TO BICKER AND ARGUE ABOUT SUCH TRIVIAL THINGS AS RAREITY OR PEOPLE PAYING ENORMOUS AMOUNTS OF MONEY FOR RECORDS.....WE WERE ON THE SCENE FOR ONE UNIVERSAL REASON....BECAUSE WE LOVED THE MUSIC AND JUST WANTED TO DANCE.

it dosnt matter who wants to add such a record to their portfolio, if they want it because they love it so much, then so be it...ITS NOT " OH WOW!...LOOK WHAT IVE GOT, AREN'T YOU ALL SO JEALOUS?"

its easy to forget, but even frank wilson dosnt own a copy, yet frank is without doubt, one of motowns greatest assets from a songwriting point of view, many, many hit songs from the late 60's through the early 70's, his is a tremendous repetoire eclipsed only by HDH and in 1965 he created an anthem that has driven our scene, yet he knew so little about it but has been credited since by us with delivering a truely iconic dance record.

its quite obvious that an awful lot of you find it really sticks in your craw just at the mention and someone else will light the touchpaper long after weve all shuffled off our mortal coil, so why get the knives out for this record anyway?.

at the end of the day, the basic instinct is to get up and dance and in the case of this record, its danceability remains undiminished....

INTERESTING POINT:....EXACTLY WHAT WOULD BE THE AVERAGE AGE OF THE GRIPER ON THIS THREAD?:hatsoff2:g.gif

SORRY.............WHAT DJ?

REMEMBER....no-one knew it was frank wilson beacuse it was covered up and as a result, was booted as eddie foster...no-one even knew it was a motown record, other than the people ( a small clientel) who posessed the original copy...SO, ANYONE PLAYING IT IN 78 was playing a boot until 79 and its legitimate uk release, when it was then known to all and sundry as being frank wilson... THEN ANY MOTHER AND HER SON COULD CLAIM TO PLAY IT....AND JUST FOR THE RECORD......rumour and baby were both played in 72/73 from mfp lps BEFORE their release by uk motown,...A GOOD 2 YEARS BEFORE FRANK WILSON.

It was the late 70's I was talking about FW and yes I know the others were played before, I was Djing in the holiday camps/local disco's plus I had a mobile disco from 1972, lots of northern were played back then in the ordinary disco's didn't really matter what it was on back then either. Just trying to get the point over it was known to the general pubil long before KB owned his copy. I was even spinning the CC version in the local disco's in the 80's.

Correction Ian.....Rediffusion in Notttingham sold Dean Parrish as a regular Soul record as early as 1970!

For the record, this was the store that got Mercurry to press The Prophets- I Got The Fever in 1969.

File under Kev's useless trivia no.812!

LOL, I don't doubt 'cos I'd seen it around before but dismissed because of the horrible guitar on the intro - I'm not sure if I even heard it past the guitar to be honest. Too impatient in those days......

However, I give Kegsy credit for forcing it upon every DJ around the North one weekend until Russ took pity on him and played it. :hatsoff2:

No l mean 77-78ish......Whe did Kenny Burrell buy his copy......Sometime in 90's l do believe

Phil it was the very late 90s or early 00s when he got it.

I had a photo took at Tim's with T B's copy in one hand and M C's copy in the other, before Kenny got hold of it.

At the same time Maria took a photo of Carl doing the same.

of course it was known to the general public, goes without saying. ken bought it in 97 or thereabouts, some 22 years before it was played, but from my experience it was not known ( or should i say - played - respect to ian ) prior to 75, so if anyone out there can prove otherwise, then i stand to be corrected, but anyone would have to consider this: if any collector was remotely interested in filling in the blanks in the motown catalogue, in other words the obscure, uninteresting releases that only warranted a limited run, said collectors would have come across frank wilson a lot sooner, even given its supreme rareity.........but any chance of that being reality disappeared when soussan got his hands on it..

as for chris clark, yes, this didnt turn up until after frank wilson and i distinctly remember purchasing a white label copy of this cut from mick smith circa 85 although this was probably a few years after its discovery and introduction at TOTW....again if that was played anywhere else sooner then i will be pleased to be corrected.

any mobile disco or club dj would be playing a boot of FW, MID 70'S....no doubt about that....until the uk release.

There has been some big hitters joined in with this thread. Prophonics with his Ward Burton wins it every time for me. K.R. with the info on Rediffusion is tops. The info on 3/8 is still a little hazy from Ian. The thread was started to try learn a little more about F.W. and Russ really. The negatives..why even bother dudes?
