I think the boy you are talking about is Ethan, he goes with his Dad Brent from Horwich, Marcelle lets the lad in for now't and he only stays a few hours, the Civic Suite management or the folk who attend, do not seem to mind, Ethan never causes any problems and his Dad does not have to look far for him, as he is always on the dance floor or in the record bar

I had to turn him away from the Stafford Reunion as the venue management would not allow anyone under the age of 25 in, their policy.

I highlighted the last post before I posted, as that was the last one that I thought was talking about this young man, I posted he does not cause problems as others had posted about kids running around and such,

I would not let him in if he turned up on his own and if the paying public objected to him being at the event then we would have to rethink for the future.

Ethan is a really good lad ! he comes n' dances with Me n' susan , Tommo, Liam, Carl piper Joe Beech, Sammy Dee etc ... he fits in so well, does not misbehave or anything...Brent is always on hand too..... how could anyone turn him away if the law of the venue allows ? ... .. thing is lads or girls like him are few n' far between....he is dedicated... and an exception. to the rule...

I remember kids let in at Alfreton.....ok at first with some good dancers,,, all well into it....then more arrived over the months ...they ended up running around in gangs like a school playground......so it can go very wrong........

perhaps the way should be by invite only....?

I think there's plenty of posts on here that shows kids are welcome at some venues, but the poll is with regards to ALLNIGHTERS.

That Ethan lad is a great little dancer and he's 12 (or was when I last saw him). It was a pleasure to see him on the floor.

I like kids but I couldn't eat a whole one.

I hear what you're saying and in a way I can imagine it's nice trying to introduce your kids into Dad's music and night life, there's far worse things for kids to do or get in to. Personally don't mind seeing well behaved young 'uns at local friendly soul nights but would get annoyed with kids, and I mean kids under 10 running around all over the place, in peoples way, running in and out the bogs and mum & dad not seeming to give a fook about what the kids are up to or how much they're annoying others. Nighters, then for me it's a no no.

Having said the above about youngsters at local soul nights there is the other side of the coin. How would you feel if your 10 year old just happened to be near a group of blokes (and lasses) recalling the old days " I was fucking smashed mate, green & clears, bombers, we rolled a bloke, kicked the shit outta him and nicked the c-nt's motor, screwed a fookin' chemists in Uttoxeter blah, blah, blah". As a responsible parent you wouldn't be too chuffed about it, would you? However why should those same blokes have to huddle in a corner out of earshot at what in effect is an adult night, quite free and easy but have to be mindful of little ears listening.

I think the main difference is wether the kids want to be in there or not.

If they're at the nighter because they like the music and know how to behave on the dancefloor and off it, then I don't see any problems. If they're there because mum and dad dragged them and they rather be playing on the Wii, than's it' a no.

Who cares if they want to be there or not? Children don't have the right to do as they like, they have the right to protection, love, safety etc... but not many choices. They aren't allowed to drink, smoke, vote, have sex, get married, etc... etc... they earn those rights when they become adults.

What kids want to do isn't even a factor. If i don't want my kids to do something they don't do it, end of. As adults we decide what we think is best for them and that's the end of it. For me that means not being allowed to attend nighters and soul nights. Since when did a nighter become like a visit to Macdonalds? Soul nights and nighters are being treated like a family do or a wedding reception it seems to me.

The problem is there are adults and parents out there who can't see the difference between themselves and their children anymore, they share the same social life as their kids in some cases, which includes going to allnighters and soul nights. That's just completely bizarre to me.

I love my kids, i spend lots of time with them and do lots of things with them, but i'm an adult, and i have interests which i don't want to share with my kids... or anybody else's kids.

Is it too much to ask for one place where we can spend time without kids and have an adult life?

If the parents don't wan't to take them at a nighter that's theit choice and I respect it. I'm 19 right now and I'm very grateful my parents allowed me to go to soul nights full of skins and still be there for me. If you think a nighter is a dangerous place to be in I trutlly respect your choice and support you 100%.

On the other side, if you respect and trust your your kids enough you'll allow them to be anywhere they want and you'll know they behave themselves wether they're with you or not.

As I said, if they enjoy the music and they know how to behave, it's aaaaight with me.

well this is my view all venues should not allow kids until they are 16 in which they are old enough to me to be able to attend and behave. i don't go to pubs to have a drink and play darts etc and expect to see kids. so why would i go to a Northern soul night and expect kids

if parents want to take there kids out go to town, cinema, park, seaside

Spencers a bit off the peg for me,when i was wearing em' they where made to measure with 50" bottoms with no name,once slept in one of me trouser legs when i turned up at the casino and it was shut.....had a few pairs of spencers too., but the pockets were not real must say they look allright on him, but at 21st i wont be going retro very soon

I agree ..they were a bit "off the peg" mine too were made to measure at a tailor ..... but spencers could be made to measure too with fully working pockets etc......as are these.......I bought 3 pair em off evil bay for £5 a pair just for fun.... They would never fit me cos they were too small but as "historical" clothes they were worth it ! ..... then came along Ethan who only had one pair of baggies and loved wearing them........could not get any anywhere .....so I gave em to him.....nothing more fitting than a lad like him should bring them back to life .....out on the floor where they belong !

I have one of my original suits in the V&A ..... I hope Ethan will donate them when he grows out of them ......which wont be long , he grows at an alarming rate lol....

I can only speak from my own experience but Lottie has the same mindset as the rest of the nighter hardcore attendees. She's there to dance and listen to good music.

Children who are taken along due to babysitting arrangement problems isn't such a good idea as they'll play up because they're bored and tired. Lottie manages till around 5am max and then goes to the car to sleep or if the venue has plush seating she'll nod off inside the venue.

The nice thing about Lottie attending nighters is that she doesn't see real drunkenness, aggression or fighting like she would out on the Town with people her own age or up the park etc (except perhaps the record bar ). Plus we get to spend quality time together doing something we're both passionate about although her passion isn't as instilled as mine and maybe never will be.

Now then ....

. Having read the posts from both sides of this debate ... Some interesting..some......... none the less relevant ........ But. seemingly posted by Victor Meldrew ................... This thread seems to have degenerated into a witch- hunt against two youngsters in particular .

Northern Soul and all nighters has never been mainstream and as a subculture, evolved its own accepted unwritten rules and etiquette that enabled it to survive...

Some of these rituals of acceptance and tolerance were created out of a need to avoid confrontation and clashes between hormonal youngsters coming to an all nighter from all walks of life, with one goal....... soul music. something that is still relevant in todays climate.

So why do we become so insular ? Trying to stop these youngsters from becoming the next generation of soulies with similar rituals and values? We made the rules as youngsters so why not accept these young soulies ......................... They need to be nurtured not nutered?

Without them who carries the flag after our demise??

Have we become so anally retentive that we cant remember the way that the hairs on the back of your neck stood on end the first time you heard these "Played out Oldies"?

Stop looking at Ethan and Lottie, expecting them to start playing hop-scotch or tag on the dance floor. Stop stereotyping them and start looking at them as what they are ....Young Soulies with a passion for the music.

Have you ever taken the time to engage them in conversation???

I can assure you, especially Ethan that his passion and enthusiasm shines through. He is more than capable of telling you if the OKEH record you have just bought is a first or second issue, or which Dj is his favourite or going and asking to hear HIS favourite tune.....

Should by chance one of them ask "How are you" Please Victor resist the urge to say " None the better for you asking" ..... just say.......... " Fine how are you" and if the conversation continues you may be surprised that you dont have anything to fear from these young soulies.

Now then ....

. Having read the posts from both sides of this debate ... Some interesting..some......... none the less relevant ........ But. seemingly posted by Victor Meldrew ................... This thread seems to have degenerated into a witch- hunt against two youngsters in particular .

Northern Soul and all nighters has never been mainstream and as a subculture, evolved its own accepted unwritten rules and etiquette that enabled it to survive...

Some of these rituals of acceptance and tolerance were created out of a need to avoid confrontation and clashes between hormonal youngsters coming to an all nighter from all walks of life, with one goal....... soul music. something that is still relevant in todays climate.

So why do we become so insular ? Trying to stop these youngsters from becoming the next generation of soulies with similar rituals and values? We made the rules as youngsters so why not accept these young soulies ......................... They need to be nurtured not nutered?

Without them who carries the flag after our demise??

Have we become so anally retentive that we cant remember the way that the hairs on the back of your neck stood on end the first time you heard these "Played out Oldies"?

Stop looking at Ethan and Lottie, expecting them to start playing hop-scotch or tag on the dance floor. Stop stereotyping them and start looking at them as what they are ....Young Soulies with a passion for the music.

Have you ever taken the time to engage them in conversation???

I can assure you, especially Ethan that his passion and enthusiasm shines through. He is more than capable of telling you if the OKEH record you have just bought is a first or second issue, or which Dj is his favourite or going and asking to hear HIS favourite tune.....

Should by chance one of them ask "How are you" Please Victor resist the urge to say " None the better for you asking" ..... just say.......... " Fine how are you" and if the conversation continues you may be surprised that you dont have anything to fear from these young soulies.

Loved it when I was there.And would love to do it again,

Main problem is,

I love spending my time with -- wife -- daughter

Is it ok at St Bernies, to take kids

It's Allnighters that are being talked about not fuking the local Beefeater and it's Wacky fuking Warehouse.

Children of the ages quoted above (12,13,14) at allnighters is a 100% no for me, and IMO any parent who takes them to one wants reporting to the authorities for child neglect.

I'm sure we all got up to stuff we shouldn't have in our teens, but i doubt 99% of our parents knew what we were up to, and very few of them would have condoned it.

No wonder this Country is going to Ratshit, when people think that exposing their kids to some of the 'characters' on this scene at such an early age is 'acceptable'.

It beggars belief.
