Soul In The Fens

with a title like 'Soul In The Fens' one may be forgiven for expecting a room full of tired looking peat-stained land workers shuffling around their handbags on the dance floor...... but that would be so far from the truth.

this excellent venue in March, Cambridgeshire was heaving with soul, souls and atmosphere.

dee-jays Mellors, Mick Janes, Tony Dellar and Martin Stanford each to a man delivered a much appreciated and diverse set of 60s northern soul.

nothing challenging, most people knew most of the tunes, some people knew most of the words to the tunes but that didn't detract from their quality and soulful content.

highlight for me (other than being surrounded by a host of east anglian soul fans) was Mr. Dellar playing Betty Fykes and the Passions - Prove It To Me, pure cleethorpes heaven.

this small market town located in the heart of the cambridgeshire fens has thrown down a gauntlet to the many, many east midlands oldies venues.

northern soul oldies served up East Anglain style at least matches that of our close friends in Notts.

in essence it was like stepping back in time and walking into one of the many East Anglian Soul Club venues of the mid 70s (St.Ives, Kettering, Peterborough, Bourne et al)

long may this venue deliver these goods, memories of old and new memories yet to be forged.

And, as per usual, Coops modestly declines to add that he himself also played a superb hour of music too. It was a thoroughly enjoyable event and the crowd was magnificent, packed floor right up to the end and then not wanting to leave (although the burger bar situated in the car park was a great temptation!)
