Could You Play?

Where is it written that a record cannot be played twice in an evening?

I was recently at a do in Warrington, where we arrived around 9.30, when I asked the DJ to play a record he said " that's already been played by the previous DJ"

This was before 8 o clock. Most of the room were not even at the venue then so why can the record not be played again?

I'm not suggesting that the same records should be played over and over but two or three in an evening is hardly excessive is it?

if it is a fresh new sound then i would - if it is something that is played every week e.g. Ruby Andrews then no. but then again i dont think RA should be played at any time now. and it this is a soul nite not a niter then 3 times is excessive let alone 2.

Have to agree with you Dave, if it's a new or up and coming sound then by all means but as you say played out oldies are repeated throughout the night at most big venues, part of the reason we stopped going to Whitby, Blackpool etc,

Years ago some DJs would play the same record 4 or 5 times in their set if they were trying to break it and no one batted an eye-lid. Popular plays exclusive to some clubs deserve at least a couple of outings a night from the residents, as often regulars will come to hear those sounds. I don't mind hearing a brilliant new to my ears sound twice in a night. :hatsoff2:

True Matt. That said, most of the people not batting an eyelid had about a hundredweight of amphetamine sulphate coursing through their veins, and would have danced to the sound of a jackhammer, or a car alarm. As the rave scene later proved

Aah but it still had to be an authentic 60's U.S. jackhammer or a vintage Detroit car alarm. We had standards you know.........:hatsoff2:

In my opinion, the DJ was right not to repeat the tune. You did say it was the previous DJ that played it, so that was less than an hour before. By not playing it again, showed respect to the previous DJ. Besides that, he'd probably got loads of other good stuff in his box to play you. If a record is repeated throughout the night, i'd like to think it's by mistake.

I can remember many of the DJ's back in the day would play records more than once over a evening, if it was new or something that was breaking. Richard Searling would often play a record in his early spot at Wigan and then in his late set again if he was trying to push it.

Keb and Guy would often play a record twice in the same set, hell Keb even played some records several times over until people started to dance to it. It would go something like this "I'm going keep on playing this F@#&ing record, until you F@#&ers dance to it"

But there again all you young bucks have rules and heavens forbid if someone should stray from the rightous path.

Yes but those records were 'new' Dave. Plus they were usually played in the same set by the same DJ!

Chances are the record that was asked for was not.

For what its worth I would not play a record if it had already been played.

Maybe the topic starter should wait and ask one of the later DJs to play it next time. Chances are they would not have been there to hear the early spots

Yes I know Joan, but mores to the point, what up with all these 'rules'. People asking if it's OK to do this or that, just go out and have fun, be of your own free mind. Some times you please people, sometimes you don't, but just have fun. I just get this horrible feeling that there are people sitting around at venues taking meticulous note on everyones behavour, instead of just haveing fun.

When did it stop being just good fun.

Dave surely you can't say I don't go out to have fun?

How can you call choosing to not play something that has already been played a rule?

I would not go on after you and play stuff that you had played.

Why? Not because that is 'the rule' as you put it but just because it had already been played and therefore I would play something else.

Nothing sinister. Nothing to do with rules. Just that it had already been played.

Joan all of above I agree with and know, but your missing the point. Asking if it's OK to do this or that, like there is a book of rules that have to be observed

I remember Rob Marriott playing Escorts cover up (Hyperions) three times in one set at 100 Club, "you will dance"!

As for rule book, someone asked a question wanting opinions, he got several, whats wrong with that? Discussion doesn't stop us going out and having a good night.

 wasn't it Lenis Guess - For All You've Been, or Tony Galla? The good old days when DJs with balls weren't scared of a half empty (or totally empty) dancefloor playing a tune they believed in.

it was me that said that...and yes In My Opinion i do not want to hear Ruby Andrews - it is a fantastic soul record that 'our' northern soul scene has ruined by over playing...

No - it is not about floor fillers to me - it is about hearing different; new sounds - why go out every week to hear the same thing??

what i "think" I want you to hear bears no resemblance to what i envisage you want to hear so i wont even bother - in fact, if i am DJing in the same venue that you may want to go to - do yourself a favour and dont bother coming in while i am on.

Giving a new sound two or three plays in an evening is acceptable , a la as in the " good old days " , when new sounds were played several times in order to " break them " .

In any other case , the old adage of " flogging a dead horse " should be given careful consideration .

Thing is, was your night ruined by not hearing that one tune? If so I suggest you should maybe by a copy so you ca hear it at home, or if you really need to hear it played out, start your own night. I hear there's a shortage of them these days anyway.

If, on the other hand it's not such a big deal, then maybe you could - in the nicest sense of the phrase - get over it. :D

Oh my goodness, bit strong language to use dont you think against a person expressing an opinion thats different to your own.........ffs chill out.

But while we are getting things off of our chest, dont ever tell me where i can and cant go again, or what dj i can and cant listen to.......ever.

Just no need for that response really was there??

Just to throw my tuppence in.

I think sometimes if as a DJ if you work say 3 times a week, say 10 times a month then yes you may get bored with a tune. this could also apply to a customer going out over a simular period. If I go out twice a month i only may hear the same record once or twice. Should I go out more, maybe but I and others have a life outside of this soul (records) scene, and I like to go out and support the people who acctually make the tunes.

Now if you choose to play some 'rare' record, that let's face it is more than likely that if it ain't been popular over the course of the last 40 years your gonna struggle to make it so now, you have no god given right to insist on me listening to it until I dance or walk out the door & go somewhere else.

Don't get me wrong i'm not averse to hearing newly discoverred stuff, but FFS some stuff I hear played is bordering on R&R or old style R&B, I may as well turn up in my blue suede shoes.

Anyway my cage seems to have stopped rattling now so i'm off:hatsoff2:

Another tuppence worth chucked in,

Some soulies do go out every week cos they are just addicted to not only the music but everything that the scene is about and has always been about and that is travelling to nighters all over the country meeting up with mates they met many moons ago through the music listening to the music they love and taking in the atmosphere etc etc etc, now they have heard it all a million times before and most of the time have to put up with hearing tunes the peeps that have just got back into the scene only want to hear over and over and over and over and over again cos they are on a nostalgia trip and dont want to hear nothing they dont know cos its so called rare so must be shite, all they ask is every now and then to hear something new or something forgotten or just hardly ever played, now what constitutes a good tune is in the ear of the beholder, some rare stuff aint that great but some overplayed oldies aint that good either, so the oldies dont like some of the rare stuff and the rarer lovers get a tad bored of the oldies that get battered to death, whats the answer, go to a venue that suits you and if you go to a rare night then i hope yo get what you want, if you go to an oldies night i hope you dont hear them rare tunes you dont like, if you go to an acccross the board night good luck cos a decent one is so hard to find, end of the day do your homework on the event your looking to attend and get to now your djs it makes getting the right event for you soo much more easier,

me im one of the lucky ones cos i like it all and just tonight i found 3 tunes that have blown me away ive never heard of before and all because i love hearing new tunes to my ears biggrin.gif btw ive listened to about 50 tunes tonight, blown away by 3 of them, 5/6 really good, the rest just not for me, it sometimes takes a lot of listening but is there any better feeling than hearing a tune for the first time that makes the hairs on your neck stand on end :D loving it and to think there are 10s of thousands more tunes to hear  dont you just love this music

im off to make a payment

Yep. that's what drives us all surely?

I try and keep my ears open. Occasionaly, something I heard 30 years ago that didn't hit me at the time, suddenly makes perfect sense some 30 years later and hits the spot perfectly. But, by the same token, 95% of most stuff I hear doesn't pass muster at all, in any catergory. My personal expectations are very high 'cos I've been listening to music for 50 years and know what I like so I trust my ears.

So I LOVE your enthusiam Bearsy! Makes me remember why I got into this scene in the first place. I envy your innocence and fresh ears mate. That's EXACTLY how it hit me when I was your age.

F*ckin' GREAT innit?

i'm not saying everything that is rare is shite, but we all have our own interpretation on what makes a good record. You only have to read the thread on cellar full of motown 4 to see that in action, which incidentaly i've been listening to and have very much enjoyed most of it, which apart from the covers, i'd not heard before!

The problem is the scene is more splinterred now, newly discoverred good soul tracks are getting more difficult to find, hence my comment on rarety. Yes I agree their must be loads of good records that i've never heard along with ones i've not heard for years also. :hatsoff2:

IMO it's rather pointless comparing playing a record twice in a day to say at the Torch or Wigan. For one they were new or fairly new discoveries back then. Today they have been hammered for up to 40 years.

There are 1000's of records to choose from so don't really see the need to repeat plays throughout the night, just shows a distinct lack of imagination of both the promoter and the DJ's. Unless it is a new discovery I would avoid repeating a record at all times.

He did the same thing with Cleveland Wilson (A.K.A O.C. Tolbert) "I,m Shooting High" Chalky at his Mansfield niter. On first hearing it I must admit I wouldn,t have minded iff he had played it 5 times. It had the effect on us lads from Aycliffe, by the 3rd time we were all up.

We should bear in mind the "it's already been played" line can be used when a DJ simply doesn't want to play the track and he is exercising a little diplomacy. Like the old chestnut "it's in my other box", or my favourite "Jock's on later, loves the tune. He'll play it for you" - for years I used that ploy to get a procession of oldies heads to harangue him for Mickey Moonshine, Barbara Mills, Joe 90 and all that shite. How we laughed!
