filming in Dublin & North of England. Based around 2 guys discovery of Northern Soul circa 1974 at Wigan Casino, much like "Once upon a time" guess.

Fingers crossed they don't make a hash of it. I'm sure the music/dance scenes will be top notch but lets hope the 'comedy' isn't of the usually British film comedy quality. ie: cringeworthy.

Gotta stick up for my friends in the great city of Dublin. believe me its one of the hottest hotbeds of northern/ rare soul it can compare to any where i,ve ever been. Anyway Andy they dont want our old mugs in the film but they sure can portray us from way back then

maybe we have been spoiled over the years mate, we take most of the venues for granted, over the pond they just seem to be up for it more than we are maybe because the dublin scene is so much younger than our own.

Amazing. Thought the misconceptions about the Irish soul scene had been left on the boat from Holyhead many years back.

ANYONE who's been here can testify that it's one of the most vibrant, enthusiastic and clued in scenes around and that includes the UK. The Irish scene is made up of people aged 20 to 40ish who dance to and buy records enthusiastically.

We are constantly unearthing new tunes that aren't played anywhere else. There are currently four regular soul nights on in this country which may sound a bit sad considering the plethora of nights on in the UK but in a country of 4 million people, (London, with 12 million people has a bigger soul scene than Ireland) it's extraordinary to have that level of support.

We've had alldayers, allnighters and weekenders over the past few years and the calibre of guest DJs we've had has been amazing. Carl Willingham was a regular guest here for many years and sings our praises constantly. Ady Croasdell has DJd here a couple of times and loved it. And that's to name just two.

Current Irish DJs have played in Bretby, Lowton, Cleethorpes, Rimini, Prestatyn, The Valatone in London, The Greatstone in Manchester, The Meadows Club Allnighters in Nottingham, Caegwrlre Soul Night in Wrexham, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, The 100 Club and the Blackburn Allnighters. I'm sure I've missed some but we do get about and probably wouldn't be asked as much if Dublin wasn't the hotbed of northern soul that it is.

If you want to check it out there are always cheap flights with Easyjet or Ryanair and come over to Sleepless Nights, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the best northern night this country has ever produced and there have been many. Also, don't come if you're an oldies fan because you'll be extremely disappointed. We do not play The Snake. We do not play The Night. In fact, as one of our best DJs Karl Mitchell put it "we don't play anything beginning with 'THE'".

Where are they gonna get enough youngsters who can dance to Northern? I suppose they could get today's punters and spend three quarters of the film's budget on special effects to get rid of beer bellies and put hair on bald heads.

We're not all lucky enough to fall out the front door into a hotbed of soul nights, as you admit you aint been here, so you probably have no idea what its like to keep a scene going in a place with no immediate big audience. But what we lack in

numbers is made up with enthusiasm, good vibe, more youths coming onto our scene which is growing every month.

What we dont have is big ego's whose ideals are biggest is best and manage to ensure the few nights we do have dont clash with each other. Plus everyone knows that Northern Soul dancing evolved from a mixture of the highland fling, siege of ennis and the Hakka

lighten up this is a thread about auditions for a NS film not knocking the so called backwaters of NS, but hey thanks for your encouragement.

PS: next week Mick H is making the lonely trek over by donkey, we're hoping the radiogram will be repaired by then. perhaps when he returns back to UK in 3 weeks you can ask him bout us.

It's a film thus its intended audience will be aged 14 to 25 (35 at a stretch). So that rules out most of us till it crops up after midnight on Channel 4 and we can persuade a grand wean to set the Betamax. If they can make Braveheart in Iireland and Batman in London they can make a film with a Northern Soul backdrop (pun intended) in Dublin. They have made Northern soul records in the UK you know.

Gotta' say in regards to the topic post (having seen the web link) why does everyone outside of the "Scene" view the "Movement" (their word not mine) in some 1974 time capsule.

For me it has always been a continuing and developing creature, growing and adapting to it's ever changing surroundings, and never, never stuck in some godforsaken time warp...............or have i got it all so wrong......

I think with that much exposure it will kill the scene off over night.

One of the things that makes it special is the fact that it's underground. they make a film about mods! . The very next day 10,000 wannabe mods over night. I think it could be the end of the scene as we know it

WTF! Calling Danny and Paul a sarcastic pair of c@&$s just isnt on. I was delighted to see this thread on the go but it's ridiculous to think someone feels it's ok to turn it into a reason to insult the Irish scene. So what if you lived in Dublin for 3 years, it doesnt give you the right to be rude. I challenge you to a dancing duel! No, really, I mean it.

As for the auditions in Dublin, I made enquiries, they only want dancers between the ages of 16 to 30 in attendance. I'm going on Sunday so I'll post up further details if anyone's interested.

you're damned right. I went from the siege of ennis to the stage front at wigan almost overnight. one of the moderators on this list can vouch for that, 'cos he too was often roped in on the 'siege' by my mad aunt mary. those were the days. 8 pints of guinness or light & bitter & then onto the phoenix for some frenzied board stomping...

at the end of the day, I don't think it really matters where they hold the auditions. dublin is as good a place as any, but then again, so is barcelona, or rome, or paris for that matter. I imagine 'tecnical accomplishment' & 'celluloid appeal' will be high on the list of job pre-requisites.

In an earlier post i mentioned that I had done a bottle of Dooleys.. I have since done half a bottle of wine...
