The film is Hellzapoppin' , from 1942. The dvd cover notes describe the footage as: "...the greatest Lindy Hop dance routine ever filmed."

Watching clips like these...and the many on Carolina Shagging...it does beg the question as to why Northern Soul dancing developed as a singular activity rather than as couples. Surely the early influences via TV and visiting GIs showed couples dancing?

Because the popular music of 60s saw the rise of couples dancing apart (as witnessed in all those TV music shows). Further solo inspiration came from the carefully choreographed stage routines of artists and groups...

if my elderly citizen's memory serves me right I do remember around 1970 dancing WAS in couples ! Although I was too young to go to far away clubs like The Wheel,all local midlands dance halls had the guys lined up in formation with the girls in front of them,handbags on the floor etc and almost everyone was dancing in the same rythm too....."marred" only when some nutcase started doing wheelies or backdrops

also I do remember back in 1975 going to a club in New Jersey where they were playing 6Ts,and mainly Motown,man that blew me away,and yup-same thing there,guys were all in a line facing the line of girls and also dancing in sync

uk solo northern soul dancing already existed an I saw some,probably first around Notts and Leicester,Wolverhampton,etc but really at The Torch....which was fabulous and mindblowing for the sounds and dancing too ! awsome stuff indeed....one guy I will never forget was

Andy Simpson(tho were'nt mates at that time)was going "animal" on the dancefloor....and I mean,"animal"....not the gereatric zombie 2 step shuffle O.A.P. stuff,but the real thing....never saw anything like that before nor after-he was the spin-master !

The 'line dancing' I can understand as yes a lot of 6Ts dance fads seemed to 'line up' in that fashion, but the jump to all doing one's own thing...when, where and why!?

This is just a guess but i expect when lots of single lads started going out with friends, and not with a female partner, if they wanted to dance they had to develop a dance they could do alone (since working class lads wouldn't dance with their mates). From films i've seen it looks to have started in the mod clubs, although having said that did gangs of teddy boys dance alone as well in the 50s? The Carolina Beach scene looks very couples orientated and stayed that way.
