Yksoul Charity Soul Night On Saturday 27Th November 2010

At the YKSoul charity event on Saturday 27 November, an extraordinary event happened. At 11:00pm, YKSoul announced it has raised over £50,000 for 28 charities in York in its seven year history.

This remarkable achievement is down to the relentless determination, hard work and sheer dedication of its five-strong team. But, none of this would have been possible without the loyalty of all YKSoul supporters, from such a diverse background. Some of YKSoul's loyal followers have been aboard since the beginning, while others have discovered YKSoul more recently. Either way, it is so rewarding that YKSoul has raised so much money for so many worthy causes, through organising so many fantastic, successful and enjoyable soul nights in York.

Being able to donate £50,000 to local charities has been no easy task: YKSoul's costs are escalating, and it's worth just mentioning much of what goes on in the background, which is not always visible: there's complexities associated with venue hire, security, equipment hire, First Aid, planning meetings, preparing for events, liaising with so many people, printing and publicity.

Anyone who has been to one of YKSoul's legendary "All-Dayer" summer events (in 2005, 2008, 2009 or 2010) will have had the pleasure of probably experiencing YKSoul at its best.

As well as YKSoul's regular nights in York, it has been proud to be associated with several additional events in York. These have included:

• Successfully running a fun 1960s night for the Teenage Cancer Trust for sixth form students at Fulford School in 2005;
• DJs with decks at the City Screen Picture House cinema bar in York coinciding with the screening of "SoulBoy";
• DJs at York against Cancer's "Race for Life" in 2009, playing music to the 24-hour walkathon around York racecourse;
• Playing music and videos to a special interest group at the University of York studying social anthropology from the 1960s;
• DJs playing non-stop music from the era at the National Railway Museums "1968 and all that" festivities in 2008, commemorating 40 years since the demise of steam trains.

Finally, YKSoul would like to extend a big thank you to all its supporters and followers who have made raising £50,000 possible. We would like to thank all the volunteers, DJs, organisations, raffle prize donors, event staff, individuals and help from the people of the charities we have supported, of whom there are far too many to list here, and look forward to an even more exciting future for the next £50k!

I am still counting the money but we made a good sum for the charity.

People were very generous with the raffle and Paul Donnelly who was unable to DJ at last minute, made a very generous donation, thanks Paul.

It was great that so many people attended, despite the awful weather.

Our next event is on February 19th, again at Temple Hall, York St John University and tickets are now on sale.
