Bury Masonic Soul Club

Just finished tidying my records after a long but very enjoyable weekend and thought I'd start this lookback off so I can post my playlist before the records get put away and I forget what I played!

First things first though.....big thanks to Dereck, Sheila and Killa for asking me to come and DJ for them. The other guest DJ for this was Sean Haydon, a top guy and great DJ and more importantly owner of a much nicer car than mine and willing to drive us both there and back, even though he knows me well enough to realise I'd most likely talk him to boredom/death/tears for a couple of hours each way he was still happy to drive thumbsup.gif.

I'd been looking forward to this for a while now so even when I looked out the window saturday morning and saw a foot of snow on the ground and tons more still coming down I was still hopeful of making it. An hourly update of the weather around Manchester was being texted to me by Killa. A chat with Sean at about 4pm confirmed he felt just as keen as me and as the snow had stopped falling we agreed that we would do our very best to make the drive. So 6pm found me sweeping piles of snow off my car to make the 40min trip to Wolverhampton to meet up with Sean and finish the journey as a passenger in his car. That short drive turned out to be the worst part, weather wise of the whole journey as the motorways from Wolves heading north were clear and snow free.

Quick tour of Bury was in order (nice to see the sights as I obviously never get lost lol) before actually going to the venue, a decent arrival time of 8.45pm good bit earlier than we thought we might arrive. What a superb venue it is with great dancefloor, nice sound system and a very warm welcome from our hosts. The weather wasalways going to have a big impact on numbers in but that didn't stop us from having a fantastic time and it was great to see Nige Brown, Carms, Steve C, Angie and 'Wee' Willie there. Killa was spinning when we arrived and it wasn't long before Sean was behind the decks for his forst 30min spot and I was next up so the night just flew past. Killa played some beauties and Sean played two sets of top drawer dancers and at the end of the night Dereck kept us all peering at the decks as he played gem after gem for the final half hour.

That's enough typing for me......an enjoyable night, spent listening to quality records and chatting to friends old and new all rounded off with Sean supplying great company there and back. What else could you ask for???

Playlists, not in play order though I tried to remember and should be roughly correct. Possibly forgotten some but I generally do!

Apologies to you all, especially Dereck & Sheila. I was really looking forward to getting back over to Bury to catch up with ya all and I know Tony and Ann were too.

After a 3 hour journey home on Friday night for what should have been no more than 20 minutes already put a little doubt in my mind. But then seeing the state of the roads around Shevington and Standish when I made a just about successful attempt to walk to the village shop at lunchtime made me feel even more anxious. Then the final straw, no buses running and major delays on the train to Tony & Ann's. No way was I asking Tony to drive up here so rang to let them know and they were in just as much upheaval as me. So, unfortunately we both decided to vie on the side of caution.

Sounds like you had another top night and great to hear that the quality is still going from strength to strength. Hopefully the next one will be on a much brighter night and I will be there for sure.

This was an unplanned visit for us , as you know we were supposed to go to Luton but we thought it wise to stay local as the weather and conditions were so bad. Saturday we woke ot news of people being trapped on the M6 for 5 hours on friday night and Also watched a girl break a leg right before our very eyes on the pavement  outside my front door ! this sort of sealed our decision to stay put.

Come Saturday night we started to get cabin fever and felt the need to go and socialise so Bury masonic it was , literally ten minutes down the road  and we were so pleased we went.

Not many were able to brave the conditions but those that did made it a very entertaining night . We were treated to some superb sounds and also picked up a nice few too !

Just listening to my Joe Murphy right now , thanks Derek I haven't heard that spin for so long and once it kicked in my weakness opened and i had to coax it out of you . These are just the type of records that you never hear generally ?

Can you settle our little debate Derek ...what flavour were them crisps ?

The conditions were just so bad over here----I've been clearing snow for the best part of two days just so I can drive to work on Monday morning......hopefully!

Stayed in all weekend, I'm sure we missed a great night at Bury and we hope it went ok for you.

Hope to see you soon......Tony & Lisa

First, we would like to thank everyone who made the effort to attend the Masonic last night,

it was lovely to see Carms and Nige again,

and our regulars who braved the weather ,

hope it was worth the effort! We met Willie from Carlisle for the first time, and Angie b and Steve ,and what lovely folk they were too!.

Special thanks must go to Adam from "Move on" Coventry, and Seany from Wolverhampton, soon to be running the Burnley allnighter,

what sterling chaps they were! not only did they spend two hours travelling to Bury, they both played absolutely superb sets, and then

insisted on helping us pack up which was very much appreciated. It was a real pleasure to have you both on, and we would welcome

you back any time. Two thoroughly decent blokes!

Not forgetting Brian, who played early doors, well done Mate!

On behalf of myself and Sheila, Ian and Rita,& Killa

we would like to thank everyone for their fantastic support throughout 2010

and hope to see you all in January!

Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year

After an almost reclusive 3 months with no get up and go I thankfully found the umph, time and money to take Angie out and it was just the tonic!!

Great venue and a very friendly welcome to the point that the promoters even gave us a Christmas card before they got to know us.

Venue was faultless witha superb dancefloor. Musically it was my cup of tea with the onus leaning towards gritty uptempo and lesser played - spot on.

The lack of punters due to the weather never dampened the organisers nor the folk who braved the elements (which were not at all bad between Nantwich and Bury in comparison to my journey back to Hampshire last night believe me).

We really enjoyed ourselves. Came away with a couple of nice cheapies and heard some great stuff. Good to see good mates again ( Sean, Adam, Killa and Willie ) and the surprise bonus was seeing Carms and Nige who I hadn't seen for a long while. Trust you all had a safe journey home.

Will definitely be back only next time in half the time it took us on Saturday.

Icing on the cake was being handed the flier for the first "modified/back to the old stylee" Burnley niter which occurs on my birthday weekend. My Mo Jo is back I think.

Many thanks Bury Masonic Soul Club

PS: Derek, What was the German Bobby Bloom you played?

As Carms mentioned attending Bury Masonic was a real bunus for us having to pull out of travelling down to Luton wich we were SO gutted about!!

Its no secret i love this little Soul Club, Derek,Shiela and the team have really worked hard to get the vibe right and SUCCEEDED when they could have gone down the oldies/nostalgia route and had healthier attendences!

We knew in advance the music would be top drawer as Adam Topping from Move On Cov. was a guest along with Sean Wade!!

Not seen Sean DJ before he played 2 Fantastic Sets really enjoyable wish him all the luck in 2011 with the All New Burnly niter along with Karl Herd at the Helm should put Burmly back to the Top of the Niter Must Dos!!

Lovely to see Steve C and Angie,,, been an age since i seen ya Steve lad,,, last time i think was at an All Niter in Brighton were you were Blasting them with a Full On set to a Rammed Dance Floor,,,,, glad your feelin more like ya old self

Also Willie from Carlisle was there always great to see him !!

Killa and Derek the usual, well thought out sets was writng titles and lables down in me lil Black book all nite,,

Bought 4 toons off Adam and Killa so i was very pleased

Yes along with the Orrell , the Masonic is one of the most undrated Soul Nights in the North West,,, in fact i love being part of the secret!

Its only DJ commitment that stops me attending evey time,, but ALWAYS have a great night when we can attend!!

Merry Christmas Derek n Sheila hope to see yas in 2011

Sorry for the slow reply, been busy all week. Just to say, what an enjoyable time we had at this great little venue last Saturday and in such Great company, Dereck, Sheila and Killa making us so welcome. After a dodgy first few mile of the M6 it was well worth the trip with co - driver Adam keeping me amused (both ways)wink.gif

Lovely to see Steve & Angie, Willie, Nige and Carms all on good form. (Constantly thinking about that record Nige, don't sell it mate and thanks for the nice comment).

A pleasure to DJ in this very prestigious soul club. Thank you and best regards, Sean.

See you soon yes.gif
