STOLEN RECORD - CAN YOU HELP

Guest

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Unfortunately I had a copy of Bobby Day (Pretty Little Girl Next Door) stolen last night at the Llandudno niter.

I'm keen to get it back if at all poss and would appreciate anyone becoming aware of a copy turning up suddenly or being quietly touted giving me a quick call on 0161 766 9086.

If it found its way back to me anonymously that'd be fine and if anyone knows anything that may help point me towards the 45, then again, I'm not interested in anything other than geting the record back so any info can be passed on anonymously if necessary.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Neil Jones.

Let me tell you........Neil is one of my best friends on the scene and infact gave me a ride to this allnighter so the topic of converstion during the drive home was this very sad incident, as friends do we shoot from the hip and can talk with trust, now i'm going to break that trust now and let you all know that Neil was so angry, upset and very hurt that some low life would even think about taking a record out of his box, Neil is a decent top bloke and does not deserve this, infact this practice is simply not fair and totally against what we are about.

How anyone can steal a record and get any pleasure from it is just beyond me, may i wish these people simply bad luck for the future.......do the right thing and send the record back, Neil was selling this tune to secure other tunes so not only have they taken the record without payment but they have upset a really decent bloke who i care about and value as a mate.

Neil has been as ever a gentleman about this, however i am a little less nice on this topic and if ever we catch these bastards at it i can promise total retribution.

I really hope this turns out to be a mistake of somekind, but I'm afarid it won't be and it pains me that we have people amongst us that could stoop so low as to steal records or anything else come to that. One thing the Northern scene has always been known for is that you can leave your bags, handbags whatever on,under tables and know they won't be touched.

Not so long ago I was at a venue and someone tried to nick a mates leather jacket and believe me it wasn't a mistake!

Neil and Jayne are one of the nicest, hard working couple on the scene and If I knew who the git was that took the record I would have no hesitation in letting Neil know.

Chin up Neil there are pleanty of good guys about and hopefully one will hear something and your record will be returned.

I felt I had to add a reply to this very sad news.

Thieving is unacceptable full stop! I have heard about several records going missing in the past few months as well as handbags and purses, in amongst drinks and cigarette packets off tables, crikey what do we have to do, set up a table watch scheme??, has it really got to the pitch where we have to ensure there is someone watching the table and contents constantly!!

A few months back I was paid with some counterfeit notes for some records I sold and it has made me extra vigilante. as in my mind the buyer stole those records from me. I make sure I watch my records like a hawk now, if I go for a dance or a beer I ensure someone watches them while I am away.

Is it going to get to the stage where I have to lift one record out of the sales box at a time for a potential purchaser to view? I hope not!

If the person who stole Neils record is reading this, get the record back to Neil asap. You are lower than a worms tit and do not belong on this wonderful scene.

Someone knows who stole this record, imagine if the record belonged to you, how would you feel?? Stand up and be counted, do the right thing....name and shame the thief, then I hope all promoters will ban this thieving scum from each and every soul event for life!

I have had a couple of records lifted over the years and its a terrible feeling, the people who do these things are not soul fans, they are selfish scumbags and need to be taught a lesson....

I suggest that you return the record to Neil asap....before you are named and shamed......

Neil I hope the record is returned to you, it's rightful owner.

regards

Paul

Maybe this should be a wake up call to us all.

I can remember leaving £115s worth of records on a table at the Leicester Oddfellows allnighter in the early 80s, and having no qualms they would be there when I got back. They were.

But I have also in the last couple of years, stopped a guy leaving a club with my bag, and seen another person try to put his hand in a cash box, while the person on the door was distracted.

Unfortunately, not everyone understands how most of us like to conduct ourselves at Soul venues.

At Cleethorpes i had a bundle of 45's just bought, then heard a track on the floor ,simply placed the records on the nearest table and fled to the floor, when i returned and looked they had moved, fortunately for me a certain Chris Waterman had put them safely in the care of Kiddo.

I have always been comfortable with the soul crowd but as this post shows you just cannot be that careful .

Hope the record turns up Neil.

Tunes Stolen to Order Beware

Hi Guys Can I tell you all to be xtra vigilant not Just at venues, Reason

two years ago I was burgled and all that were 2500 records 6 x 400 dj casess and album cases and a classic ferrari model car collection (every die cast ever made).

Its becoming quite a frequent thing up in Yorkshire that people are being burgled for their tunes i was told off the police I wasn't the first in the area.

The thieves left a brand new lab top and other very nickable items, my tunes were stolen to order said the police thought.

I'd been collecting since I was 14 and had amased a huge amount of records but all of my prized ones were in my cases.

I was told I was probably followed home from a venue and that It is not unknown for people to be followed from (For example and Im not calling anyone in the north west a thief) say the North west to somewhere like leicester if the pay day is going to be big.

The same day another guy was burgled near me and a few weeks later a guy about 14 miles away Same thing (white Transit on the drive) only choones taken.

My Insurance did not pay up (should have been covered under a collectors insurance I was told and hadn't declared the full value???? how easy is that these days with prices changing by the minute)

I also should have documented my tunes and where possible photograped everyone for ID later in case of a burglary ..nowthey tell me..PLEEEEase how do you do that after Nigh on 26 years collecting.

I now dont discuss my collection to any but my closest friends and are anxcious to know whos watching when I buy at venues. paranoid ...absolutely the price of vinyl is such that its a thieves paradise. and I make sure my box is locked when I dj and no one but no one browses my box any more.

Let me tell you Ive not slept properly since and my house is like a fortress and thats why Ive not said where in this text I live suffice to say Yorkshires all you need to know.

Neil I sympathise with you in fact its stomach churning, whether it be one tune or a thousand it makes no difference the bastards need their hands chopping off.

We all know there has always been a certain amount of pinching of records on the scene and the only thing that i know for certain is that whenever one of the thieving bastards has been named they have disapeared fast from the scene. So as long as we know who they definately are name and shame them every time. I know as a collector for many years (?) that my good name is worth more than the value of any record.

The BASTARD (S) are getting there sounds free from use who pay good money to own these beloved sound, I say kick the S**T out of them

I could go on, but this sort of behavier gets me so mad I lose control

If it were mine and I found out who it was, the bastard wouldn't be walking for a long, long while

Though I agree and understand the amount of feeling that this act has evoked in people, my concern is should this person have a conscience and a computor that whilst people "post" negative and threatening remarks on forums this will close the door for Neil having any chance of his record being returned.

Can I make a suggestion that if you know or are the person that took this record maybe by mistake, that you post it back to Neil..

I have noted an earlier post regarding records stole to order so it may not be wise to put his home address up, how about FTAO Neil Jones, Bury Town Hall or if Neil reads this he could put an address up.

I can imagine a few eyebrows being raised at this post but surely the end result we all hope for is that the record is returned to its rightful owner.

Here's hoping Neil

Chris is absoultely right and as we've seen on other forums - naming and shaming has its repercussions. People how are not even involved in the initial incident end up being dragged into it unwillingly.

This is a personal matter between Neil and however took his record, and as Chris also rightly said, the best thing people can do is keep their eyes and ears open and pass on any relevant information to him.

I've nothing to add, I wonder how this person feels when they play it. More to the point you know that feeling when you pick up a nice tune so you have to tell your mates, and how much it was etc. imagine telling one of your mates that you was a thief, maybe not maybe they just lie to there mates.. What would you expect from some one like that.... SCUM.

(Only added this so it stayed on the front page maybe the thieving scum will see how people feel on this website.)

Yes it is a personal thing Kolla and Co but as a very close friend to Neil and being in the car on Sunday on the way home it really hurts to see one of your best buddy's close to tears with total anger and various other emotions flowing.

I take your point that it would be wrong to drag perhaps inocent people into this, but the stealing of records is totally against all that we are about and i feel if we don't make a stand sometimes and vent our frustrations then if it's left totally alone have the bad guy's not won? and be left to feel that they have got away with this criminal act, you steal from a shop and get caught you appear in court repeat the action and you go to jail, so what protection and justice can we secure to stop this happening?, has to be retribution if caught and a total ban for life from soul events.

Several years ago someone was caught red handed total named and shamed, banished from the scene and has never been seen since which is how it should be.

As ever Kolla your point is spot on so lets hope something comes of this and my mate Neil gets his 45 back.

Hi again,

I've only had the chance, today, to read the responses on here following my post at the weekend and I have to say that I am absolutely overwhelmed at the amount of supportive comments and help I've recieved in the last few days. Not just here on Soul Source but via emails, txts and calls from loads of people who have taken their valuable time to pass on a few kind words or offer help in trying to locate the record.

The record has not turned up unfortunately (and being honest with myself, I suspect that it wont) but my faith in the fantastic people on this scene has been given a much needed boost since Saturday from the 99.9999% of the brilliant people I see and meet every week.

As for the thief who took the tune. I can only take some comfort that you will never, ever, enjoy hearing that record ever again and, if you know who I am, will never be able to look me in the eye without the fear of your own giving you away.

Soul? You don't even begin to understand what it is. And you never will. Your loss is greater than mine.

My heartfelt and sincere thanks to you all.

Neil Jones.

I remember a dealer back in the Wigan era,(can't remember who) that had a thin steel rod, secured at each end by padlocks, that passed thru' the midddle of his box and thereby thru' the center of the records (no good for uk records tho') This allowed you to flick thru the choons, but you could not physically remove them unless you wanted to buy, when he would then withdraw the rod and release the record. Quick, and easy to do, I recon, any 1/4 inch pipe would do, it doesn't have to be solid, and a small hole in each end of the box. Might be an idea for dealers etc in this day and age!

Good idea, but wouldn't it just be sod's law that the record you want to play/sell would be right in the middle! Still, I might have to make myself one...

When i was an apprentice working in Staley Bridge there was a second hand record shop that used to sell northern Originals and pressings etc that used to do exactly the same, can't blame them though can you?

Gloucester Disco Centre used to do the same thing - the metal bar through the 45's - in there 45 boxes.

Used to be a pain in the arse asking to look at a 45, waiting for them to unlock it, to check condition etc.

I also remember watching a dealer in the record bar at Wigan giving a thief a right pasting after he caught him trying to nick a record.

Disgraceful. Insurance (and good locks plus vigilance backed up by the threat of extreme violence) is the only answer. It's a bit rose-tinted to say the least to say records haven't always been nicked; I had two 45s half-inched at a Whitchurch nighter in about 1987 and my mate had a Fantastic Four 'CSLFMB' taken at the 100 Club the same year.

I'm happy to put people in touch with a specialist insurance company I use if anyone is interested. I wouldn't consider myself a major collector by any means but it's still been worth doing for me from both burglary and fire points-of-view (imagine the dilemma...the house is on fire and it's your Fascinators or your missus...ummm...errr.....sorry luv.) Just gives you (and your wife) peace of mind.

I posted something on this on RSF a while back and one or two people did follow it up.

Never ceases to amaze me that people don't insure their records.

I sat in the house of one very well-known collector a month or so back. He estimated his collection as being worth £250,000 to £500,000 - in other words, about a Transit van-full.

It was not insured.

You insure your house, your car, your sofa and your telly...but your records, which might be worth more than all that put together, to say nothing of the emotional and sentimental value...those you don't bother with!

You've only got to read geordiejohnson's heartbreaking post on here...I can't speak for you Geordie but I'm sure you will never quite get over losing those records and my heart goes out to you.

Dan

Btw I do NOT work for the insurers! lol

Although I have been on the scene since the days of Wigan, I am new to this site. I have read and am disgusted with the growing trend of stealing records to order. My friend also experienced something similar recently, although the item was not valuable, it was a gift and hard to replace. This idea has probably been done but what about a section on this website "Lost & Found". It would at least give a dedicated place to look for these items rather than trawling around all the postings? Sorry if this has been done and I have not come across it yet!! Chrissie

Also you go to the insurance company who tell that the premiums to

insure a relatively easy selling item costs you another fortune to insure as the items are very high risk,

Nobody wins in the long term

Iremember January the 1st daytime after a long night ON New years eve

leaving the van loaded, back window out everything gone, apart from the base bins which were too big to get through the rear window of an old trannie,

7 grands worth of sound and light plus 15,000 pounds worth of music,

insurance refused to pay,as there was no grill on the inside of the back window ,although it was covered and painted and you couldnt see inside.

got 500 from vehicle ins for loss of goods

Neil this has gone way off point and I hope this was a genuine mistake by a forgetful punter and that he remembers and contacts you with regards to the record and then everyone will be happy,I will keep a watchful eye this side of the penines for a bargain buy and let you know if I hear of anything

Nothing worse than that sick feeling.

Can I add my own misfortune - I had a Daybreak, Charles Johnson, Bill Harris, Will Collins & Will Power, David Sea, Beloyd, Tavasco taken amongst others from my collection in the late 90's.

I still have sleepless nights when I remember this at bedtime, fucking awful.

These incedents are absolutely disgusting, although never had records nicked I did have a so called friend steal an envelope from my house which contained a lot of money put to one side to pay a bill (A guy I had travelled all over the country with) and because of this I had to sell my best records to make some of the money back up again. This was back in 1985 and I could not afford to replace them then, at todays prices I would have to win the lottery :)

Personally I would be happy to take anyone cought stealing at a soul do down a back alley and give them a right good kicking thumbsup.gif

That is real shitty m8, if it's any consolation I had a 45 rpm worth £20 nicked at one of my local soul nights and it nearly broke my heart to think someone on such a decent scene would do this nowadays, ok back in the early 70's maybe.

Only thing I can say is were there any marks on the label or vinyl to identify it.
