Kolla,

I've managed to cut my holiday short that week so I'll be able to make it down after all, hurray. But you can't let me forget to pick up my ticket for the birthday bash, I'm counting on you Kolla. ;-)

Guest in town Mikey

I used to go to Filthy's when I was at college in North London.

It was all spit and sawdust, literally. It must have changed a lot now. Does Shane McGowan still own part of it?? Has it been done up??

Had a great drink up there one night. We re-enacted Ray Houghton's goal against Italy in the 94 world cup, with a group of Romanian tourists. With a mate shaun, trying to explain to the mother, that she was in fact the italian goalkeeper, and couldnt keep trying to reach her glass of orange juice.

Gene, you'll have the owners spitting sawdust... it's a WHISKEY bar, not a WINE BAR

Mikey, it's nothing like the glory days when Gerry and Shane were in residence. Never in the history of bar rooms were so many heads , marriages, hearts and bones broken... It's been scrubbed, polished and stripped of the Irish theme but it's still a really nice wee pub.

PS: James - I promise I won't forget to remind you :)

Wasn't it Filthy McNasty and the Bar Stewards?

It's more of a pub than a bar. It's co-owned by Paul Hallam, top mod geezer from the early 80s and ex 100 Club regular Danny DeCourtelle runs it.

The highlight and indeed the raison d'etre (whooo, get her!) is a poetry recital from 100 Club regular Patience Agbabi who's a great poet and performer and has written several music and Northern based poems. There'll probably be an open mike spot for anyone who wants to read out music related poems or lyrics; I'm hoping to be pissed enough to do just that and am press-ganging several other faces so that I'm not the only terrified one. We've got the back bar and there's a large outside seating area where they'll be doing a barbeque. The music will not be particularly aimed at dancing, just great 60s & 70s soul.

100 Club regular Patience Agbabi who's a great poet and performer

Patience is a cool lady - here's one of her poems:

NORTH(WEST)ERN

I was twelve as in the 12-bar blues, sick

for the Southeast, marooned on the North Wales coast,

a crotchet, my tongue craving the music

of Welsh, Scouse or Manc; entering the outpost

of Colwyn Bay Pier, midsummer, noon,

niteclub for those of us with the deep ache

of adolescence, when I heard that tune.

Named it in one. Soul. My heart was break

dancing on the road to Wigan Casino,

Northern Soul mecca, where transatlantic bass

beat blacker than blue in glittering mono

then back via Southport, Rhyl to the time, place

I bit the Big Apple. Black. Impatient. Young.

A string of pips exploding on my tongue.

Filthy's have passed on the full details for Sunday 15th (i've also put it in the event guide)

SUNDAY 15th of AUGUST

FREE ADMISSION

"Poetry and the Soul"

with Patience Agbabi & DJ Ady Croasdell

Ady is the driving force behind London's longest running club night namely the monthly Northern Soul night at the 100 Club - The 6T's All-nighter

Patience Agbabi has had two books of poems published and is close to completing her third. She has also been published extensively in collections and magazines.

Her forte is her performance where she recites and enacts the best of her work.

As a regular attendee of Northern and rare soul nights around the capital, her work sometimes reflects this musical influence and its these poems that will be recited along with the highlights of her other work at  the mic tonight.

Ady Croasdell will be providing soul records from his collection for a summer's day, post all-nighter, trauma recovery period. Expect to hear Tyrone Davis, Sly, Lou Johnson, Kenny Carter, Bettye Swann, The Dramatics, Clydie King, Johnnie Taylor, Gladys Knight and The Main Ingredient rather than that stomping stuff he tries to fill a dancefloor to. He will co-opt fellow soul fans with impeccable taste to spin some sounds too.

Kicking off at 3pm until late and Patience's main performance will be at 8.30pm
