I used to take a cassette, never really a success, wish i could find em now.

Just used to get mine from Manship, a lot of Soul Sam stuff on those, stuff not getting played at Wigan, remember Jimmy Burns on one, long before it got played at the Casino.

Got one 45 left: One side The Tempose c/u (Lil Lavair and the Fabulaous Jades I think) - I'll Be So Happy b/w Lesley Gore - Just Casn't Get Enough of you (same as Apollas on Loma), think this is album only but not sure. Got this from Eric Hetherington local respected DJ we used to look up to as a 16 year old.

Just found an album but don't remember track listing - sure it includes Rain tho. Terrible sound quality.

The paper flier is an insert from an album put out locally, I'm thinking 1990s but not too sure. Can remember who but perhaps politeness should rule.

I also remember this album, ground breaking at the time and it was put out by .... ah well as you say, politeness

Not sure why they put that credit to Charity Brown on the reissue, it wasn't on the original.

By Rain it was a top ten hit in Canada circa 1971. We weren't to know that back then

Charity was solo by 75 and the "re-issue" was intended to cash in on her new status and the popularity in the UK, not really a boot/pressing but A re-issue.

I had one with Lorraine Silver on as well, this was before it was played at Wigan and was only getting played at St Ives, it was meant to be Down In The Dumps by Tony Hester but the chap who did them couldn't get that. Having said that, we got a sort of exclusive as it wasn't really known and it became a big record locally via my emidisc. Just for the record - I still think it's great! (Other tracks on there were Bernie Williams, Rain and Al De Lory)

Just remembered I also had a jeanette harper / anderson brothers, a detroit executives / phyllis brown - i've got something on my mind, which I don't think was ever played anywhere, maybe the Mecca?

78 was the year that most of the poorer white records started getting played (Nita Rossi, Blue Chips, Sue Lynne that sort of thing) mainly but not exclusively by Keith Minshull to be honest. I've got a tape of Pep playing Rain in about October 76 and the clapping on it is so loud (also on same tape Matt Lucas, Rosemary, Jay & The Americans Got hung up along the way (played by RS), Yum Yums, Broadway Cissy, Johnny Williams Just a little misunderstanding, Ron Holden, Gentlemen & Their Lady Like Her 12", French Fries, MVP's, Ronnie McNeir, Astral trip - I know all this off by heart having played it so many times after I taped it)

This weekend I have been tiding the garage up, as some if not all of us do now and again. I took the lid of one of my boxes of soul mags and the top one was Blues & Soul from March 1971.

In Dave Godin's column he wrote " I Hear that a real racket in white label dubbed copies of in-demand records is flooding the Northern Soul Scene. It will be short lived I think"

He covers the illegality of it, the unfairness to those involved in the making of the records not receiving royalties and tax avoidance.

Dave's closing sentence" There is a world of difference between taping a rare record for your own use, and this wholesale illicit manufacture for gain. So don't be a sucker - the originals can often be bought quite legally much cheaper too !.

Interestingly there was not one advert in the mag for a function. Certainly changed not long later.

Until the advent recently of rare studio cuts fetching big money , I seem to recall that in the mid 70s , the " going " rate for a two - sided Emidisc was £5 each .

Yes, was a massive record in 76 and early 77, then reissued on that Axe label that Webby mentions.

It's one of those records that people say is pop crap but it used to sound great blasted out loud at Wigan.

In respect of Rain .....

Whilst LADY B and I were on a trip to California in 1980 , we went to Disneyland , and a group called Rain were playing live sets there twice a day .

I wondered if it was the same group who had recorded " OOMM " , so we watched their afternoon performance ( good pop

/ MOR ) , and upon them finishing their set , I went up and asked them if they were THE Rain .

They told me that they were the same group , and were intrigued that people in England knew about the record , as it had been a relative failure in the US .

I can honestly say, I've only ever owned one, and can remember vividly the night/whereabouts (albeit not the exact date) I bought it!.... Approx 1975 at the "Oval" in Cheltenham on a Tuesday night,where I remember Jerry "Hippo" Hipkiss was in"residence"......Hot Line- Reggie Garner was on the one side (Can't quite remember the flip), albeit I actually recall it due to the fact that on leaving for home at the "finale"@ 1 Am and having to wait til 4 AM for the train home to the "port" with a severe case of the "squits"......

Whilst subsequently concluding the shellac had influenced my "regularity........ I suddenly decided to go totally OVO........It was indeed a case of s-it or bust!

Within a few months I had the whole of it on British reissues except that dreadful 3 Degrees track.

It's not that sad because it was played on pre-release for a long time before it came out on 20th century and before Ian had those Tomorrow label demos made up, the only way anyone could get it was to get an emidisc done. It was truly massive at the time so all the dj's needed a copy.
