Jackie Wilson At The Casino

Recommended Posts

For the life of me I cant remember what the date of Jackie Wilson appearing at the Casino! Hardly surprising really, though is it? I believe it was also his last UK appearance before returning to the States and sadly passing away. Though I could be wrong on that point. All I know was it was a fabulous , magical show. One of the stand-out live appearances I have seen ! Anybody got the date?

It was deffo in June - the flyer is wrong or it was pushed back.

I'll see if I can find my ticket.

And it was 1976 not 1975.

what a memory! is that def because the flyer says May 10 or was it put back?

On September 29, 1975, Wilson suffered a massive heart attack while appearing in Dick Clark's Good Ol' Rock 'N Roll Revue at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Wilson collapsed on stage while singing a line from his hit "Lonely Teardrops" ("My heart is crying..."). He was revived after medical personnel worked nearly 30 minutes to stabilize his vitals, but the lack of oxygen to his brain left him comatose. Meanwhile, Eliza Mae Wilson died only two weeks after Jackie fell into a coma, severely distraught over her son's illness. He briefly emerged from his coma in early 1976 but slipped back into unconsciousness and was in a vegetative state for the remainder of his life, as an inpatient at a nursing home, eight years and four months.[19] Jackie Wilson died January 21, 1984 of pneumonia, at the age of 49 at Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly, New Jersey after being admitted for having trouble taking nourishment.

Hackles Wigan concert must have been may or June 75 would have loved to have seen him live but I didn't start going till march 76

According to wikipedia Jackie Wilson sadly died in 1984

Love his voice and energy in his tunes

Soul galore !! You bet Jackie !

I opted not to go to the JW WC gig , for fear of possible disappointment with his performance , as this unfortunately was a common occurance with me when seeing my musical heroes .

when did he record "it only happens when i look at you"....cos i bought it on release in 79...

It was released in 1977 on 45 and the Nobody But You lp in 76 I think over here (I've got a copy in the cupboard, I'll check if you need me to) and 1975 in the US. No US 45. Dunno when it was recorded.

It was on the "Nobody But You" album which came out in late '76 I believe. However, when it was actually recorded could be anytime, sometimes even years prior to release.

it was a stand-out night among many at the Casino,Mark. A lot of them are a blurr for obvious reasons but that night still remains clear in my head. Can still see him on stage!. Any way I could get a copy of that 20 minutes?yes.gif

 Hi All....2 things for me to correct, it was a memorial night of corse, not a fund raising night reguarding his hospital bills, So did we ever do such an event, on the scene??/ or did I take some of that acid that i use to sell???

2. that would mean that it was the record by the Vontastics, as iI dont remember the Gene Mc Danials ever being play prior 1977??

I was right about him dieing on my birthday 21/1/ old age is a comin :ph34r:DAVE

Isn't it amazing how different peoples memories are of the night.? Is that because of expectations and whether it lived up to our own? Had any of us seen him before and were we already pre-judging him.

Or was it the drugs?? ie. was Jackie Wilson better on 20 green & clears than he was on 10 chopstix or a few ephidrine!

haha I was wondering more about the audience Malc..was the quality of intake of uppers influential towards the view of how good he was...seeing as different people have such varied opinions of the night.

I declined to go on the night JW was on , the reason being was that I did not want my illusions to be shattered if he was below par on the night , as I had been when I saw many of my " heroes " perform live .

In respect of opinions about his act , the people who attended that I spoke to after the event ( a mixture of partakers and non - indulgers ) , had mixed views as to the quality of his act , but from what I recall , they stated " he was OK " .

I was there also along with around two and half thousand others . I can honestly say for a man to that was meant to have been unwell and given a not so good performance as some folks say , I have never seen anyone before doing back flips and putting so much energy  in to a performance .I thought he was fantastic didn't hear anyone booing the noise  was defaning

I was at the Jackie Wilson   performance  at the Casino, and to be honest , it was not a patch on the Betty Wright  performance a few weeks earlier .   No one  realised at the time that Jackie Wilson was ill , ( no one i knew any way ) , and the consensus  at the time seemed to be that it  was a bit of a let down .    In hindsight , i realise what a privelidge it was to be at the final show of such a ledgendary figure .

No on both of those , wasnt it quite a short  show ?  dont remember the sound being noticably  any better or worse . What i do recall of that evening is the small record outlet on the balcony  had a  page long list of  Brunswick   Jackie Wilson 45s For sale ,unusual as it was mainly an outlet for   pressings .
