Sonic Soul - February 25Th 2011

Just back in after an eventful evening at Sonic Soul, from start to finish.

Bit of a panic at the start of the evening when scheduled plans went a wry. Pat was due back from his golfing holiday and was expecting to drive back down to the midlands, pick up the kit at his workplace in "Harboro" and be at Lutterworth in plenty of time to set up the equipment for our 7 o clock kick off. I was going to get over about 6.30 and set up the tables and chairs.

At ten past five I received a call from Pat to say he had been stuck on the M6 south bound and had not even made Leicestershire, with us usually picking up the keys for the venue at a shop in the town neither of us were going to be able to get to the shop before 5.30!!!

Not to "PANIC" we agreed the bar manager Keith would be at the venue to open the bar for 7 so we would both go straight there.

When Therese, Christine arrived over from Corby the venue was in darkness.

Then "THE PANIC WAS ON" if your reading this "John Pugh" I'm sure you will have a bit of a laugh!! :)

After a few quick calls to both Pat and the bar manager, neither of whom answered I thought it's "gonna be one of those nights".

I had a bit of a brain wave (eh) the bar manager had mentioned he also ran a pub in the town , so of we went and low and behold a barman at this pub had a set of keys!!

I said to the girls as I got back in the car "Amazing" everybody in Lutterworth must have a set of keys to our venue bar us. lol.

Keys sorted it was back to "The Wycliffe Rooms" to set up, followed not long after by Pat with the kit. :D

Things started to ease in to place and I started to think this is going to be a cracker of a night, after all. :)

We knew after last months opening night in which members from last year had free admission, that odds on, it was not going to be quite as busy.

But hats off to everyone that came over and supported us, I could write a big long list, but I will say if any of you are reading this Pat & I are truly grateful for your loyal support.

Now you might think I'm now at the point where I start praising the DJ's for turning up, playing quality tunage and keeping the dance floor busy. Well why bloody not!! Another night at Sonic Soul where original vinyl has ruled the roost, and not just ovo, the quality of it.

Best compliment we have ever had came from well travelled/DJ Mr Ian James who put Sonic Soul musically, being in the top five venues Soul Night/ All-nighter in the country for original vinyl. I know peeps will say "they are blowing there own trumpets" but I kid you not, all last year at "The Town Hall" and the first two this year, at "The Wycliffe Rooms" have been "Heavyweight". :D

What can I say about the guys tonight, "WOW?"

Ralph Forster, one of his best ever sets at Sonic

Rob Gray, tunage on a par with Mr Massey :D

Ian James, if it's worth dancing to, he's got it.

Pat Wallace certainly knows how to get the Lutterworth crowd buzzing, despite DJing out of a suitcase.

And not forgetting our special guests of the night Karl & Marco from "Simply Soul" doing their double decking magic, not only playing something different for us, but also cramming in as many requests as possible.

Now to a down side of the night, which to the majority as co promoter, I accept much of the blame.

About ten forty five we had a group of people came in asking for entry, normally we have had a no soulies ban from people in the town, to avoid trouble, but as one of them was in a wheel chair, two being named as his carers and two friends I decided to let them in, as we have always had a keen ethic at Sonic for recognising disabilities due to one reason or another, which I will not go in to at this time.

To cut a long story short when this group came in I could see they were giving it the none soul dance treatment to which I know can be disruptive but as the chap in the wheel chair seamed to be having a good time I had this image in the back of mind we were doing the "RIGHT THING" by letting them in.

How wrong I was, first thing I knew was when Mel from Banbury came up to the bar (where I was just being served) to ask if Keith "the bar manager" if he could intervene in abuse that was be hailed by one of the group at Charlie also from Banbury (just for the minority out there who don't know him) lol.

I obviously also went over and what followed was an uneasy 15/20 in which it took for this group to be persuaded to leave.

Big hats off to Charlie for keeping his "KOOL" if roles reversed I don't think I could of, and by doing so, things didn't dilute into something more serious. But I did notice out the corner of my eye there were several souls on stand by just in case, thanks guys and also to Keith our bar manager for getting involved.

I will state that one or two of the group were very apologetic as they were escorted out but unfortunately by then the damage was done including a dent on yours truly (take folks at face value) nature.

Soon things were back to normal including Charlie necking of complimentary drinks from the bar. (Thought that group had a Banbury Twang) lol. Went round and asked everyone "I hope it didn't spoil their night", but in true Soulie tradition "The Show Went On" especially Charlie whose reply was "Gave me quite a buzz".

The moral of the story is don't mess with "The Banbury Posse" especially when "ON Tour"

Here's to March lets hope there are no "MAD HATTERS", one thing is for sure no "TOWNIES" especially on 4x4's. lol

Thanks to everyone who stayed behind at the end to help pack away, we had another late finish and this is truly acknowledged by those who gave their time to help Pat & myself. :D

Finally if you've had a bad time of late, get your self over to Sonic Soul and receive a hefty dose of "PAIN MEDICINE" and put a "Soulful Smile" back on "THE FACE". :)

Hi Tom

Wow what another great night at Lutterworth!!

Always a pleasure to spin some of my more select tunes at this venue, many more for the next one...

Thanks for the compliment Tom, being compared to the great Mr Massey has made my day

My future wife and chauffeur, Lynn and I had a great time depite it being a litle eventful at times! People who dont appreciate what a soul night is all about should probably go to other places, no more needs to be said on this

Thanks to all for dancing

atb Rob :(

PS top tune of the night for me was a new one to me played By Ralph, Susan Shirley - Really into something. When you've been on the scene as long as me its great to hear new tunes, good stuff Ralph, lets have some more next month

It wasn't a problem Tom, in fact I think Charlie and Rich enjoyed it a bit too much...rolleyes.gif

It was quite nice at the beginning as they were up and dancing all night, it's just that evil demon drink when it takes over...

I did wonder as we left what time you actually finished, I'm sure I read somewhere that it was 1am...:(

Thanks to Keith for offering to put out flyers but of course I forgot to give them him before he left...:D

Tabs - thanks for the chocolate...not...

A most enjoyable evening and a 10 minute journey home...

Morning campers!!!

Music was great from when the Tabs Taxi arrived at 7.30 pm to when they chucked me out at 2.30am in Banbury........ but next time could you leave me at my door not Banbury Cross??:thumbsup:rolleyes.gif

Got formally introduced to Sian and Claire which was good  ; at long last I appear to have finally made it into the exclusive Tabs T. T.O. T. Club*

Not as many in this time, but as Tom said, to be expected; the music was absolutely great - this from someone who sticks to what I know usually - I am slowly but surely being educated by Sonic Soul!! This is helped hugely by no cliquey groups of 'know it all' soulies looking down on novices like me which really does make all the difference to a happy & fun night out. Danced and danced and danced - lovely floor and some great dancers to aspire to!!!

As for the fracas - nothing Charlie couldn't handle and he will of course dine off this for several events to come!! as an observer and only 5 Becks consumed at the time  , my view is that the individuals were out of order and just ready to start on the first available person......ooops they chose Charlie' from the Bretch' Mac!!!!! Bad choice!!!! All sorted by Keith the bar manager ( he is coming to the next Banbury do!!) and 'the lads' on mass. Us girls just did what we always do....kept on dancing!!!

Have to say also that the Bar manager liked Sonic soul so much last time that he had invited along some of his personal friends who loved it and we have exchanged numbers for the next Banbury & Sonic do's. Also a quick shout to Mia from Nuneaton - see you soon hopefully x

Loved it, great to see and meet new and old friends and cant wait for the next er ........round?//!!!:D

Lots of love

Blimey Tom, an eventful evening as you say!

My first night there as you know, and good to meet you & Pat & a few others around the bar and floor.thumbsup.gif

Some great records played without a doubt + covered the whole spectrum I think it's fair to say... Marco & Karl, then Rob sure did well to keep going as they did, once again playing superb records while the bit of fuss was going on. What can you do if some people just don't have respect?!huh.gif

Cheers and I hope the next one goes better for you all, with more people and less distraction from the music!yes.gif

Tom and I are meeting this week to ensure we have no more little distractions. I must say that promoting with Tom is an absolute pleasure. He has a sharp brain and just gets things sorted. Big thanks to everyone who came along. Just great music and a growing set of people who appreciate their soul.

Karl and Marco gave us a real range and kept evryone on the floor. As for our comitted rotating DJs they were all on top form.

I will get a playlist up in that section today!

Tom & Pat - What a great night yet again at Sonic Soul, this venue will go from strength to strength as word spreads though the grapevine. Can I suggest a white line is painted in the reception leading to a hand bag, if punters can walk straight and not stop for a dance at the bag, then & only then can they come in. You might need a stinger for the odd joy rider in a wheel chair. Other than that I can make no further suggestions to improve this cracking venue. Hopefully see you all again next month.

Well folks we all had a fantastic night at the new Wycliffe Rooms venue again in Lutterworth. Lots of great tunes played throughout the night. Sadly missed most of Ralph's spot as we were still enroute to get there. (Always enjoy his spots). Great sets by Rob and Pat Wallace. Plenty of dancing all night. Carl and Marco's set was really enjoying it, then got involved in a bit of banter with a some locals. Strangley enough I was still trying to listen to the records as the banter was going on! Cracking venue lads, I've got to say. Great night out. See you at the next one.

Just to let you know www.banburyinternetradio.com on Tuesday 1st March (tomorrow) 7-10 live. Banbury and Oxford DJ's tribute night in memory of our good friend and fellow DJ Dave Bailey. Tune in and join us. Also, hope to have news of the new Banbury venue soon!

Sorry for missing yet another venue, a late decision to go into work on Saturday and a hard week all round.

Looks like an eventful night missed.

See you all soon.

Thank you for all your feedback, just a quick mention that if anyone left flyers at Lutterworth on Friday, I have collected them up and will put them out at any events I attend until their event date, where applicable.

Also Pat and I will be meeting on Monday to discuss issues involving entry and security at forthcoming nights to ensure genuine soulIes are not disturbed by outside influences on their night out.

Regards

Tom
