Have been watching this thread for a few days now. Having been to The Greatstone and Soul Or Nothing, I can say that they both serve up something different, all IMVHO of course.

Maybe just because every record isn't worth 4 figures, does that make it crap and un-dance-able??? It seems from the playlist that the only stuff you want to dance to, Phil, is a Mega-Rarity??

I really like the sound of your night, I too enjoy listening to different sounds, but another night that clashes with an established night in the Manchester area defeats the whole object to be honest.

I thought Lifeline/Sheridans was brilliant. But they ran every 2 months and very rarely got 250+ (I stand to be corrected here!). Do you think you are going to attract the numbers to fill out a 'specialist' night, because that's what it is, when it clashes with another night locally?

I'm not speaking on behalf of either of the promoters, but I don't think they promote themselves as the 'rarest of the rare' nights.

What they offer is something different than Brighouse, Prestwich et al. Various guest DJ's will play different styles, especially at S.O.N. where the emphasis is very much on giving up-and-coming DJ's and collectors an opportunity to play their tunes to an open-minded crowd.

Like Tony already mentioned, the guests that are on at The Greatstone are pretty much A List. The sample playlist from your night is pretty much what I would expect from Mick H, Keith Money etc, and IMVHO no different to what they would play guesting at The Greatstone or S.O.N.

Wish you luck Phil, I admire your balls for having a go, it's never easy doing this promoting lark, but I feel that you would be given all the support in the world from other local venues if your dates didn't clash. For example the Greatstone boys support S.O.N. and vice versa.

These are just my musings, and in no way are they the opinions of the aforementioned. I just think with better planning etc... well, you know

All the best,

Jamie whistling.gif

(p.s. I thought the Pirates were hilairious, then again, I don't take things too serious  )

I think you have all taken my comments too seriously. Much of it was with tongue very much in cheek.I have not deliberately clashed with s.o.n. in fact I have tried my damdest not to clash with anything [impossible]. In fact, I would be going there myself if not for the clash. I don't want to be a promoter, don't like the politics, but if I'm going to do something, then I'm gonna try and do it proprely.

This started out as an attempt to create a buz for my night. One comment made tongue in cheek started this lot. And they say there's no such thing as bad publicity. All any of us can do is state a personal opinion. And that's all I've done. Thanks to everyone for their input in this thread, I have learned a lot from it.

Hope to see you all at the next soul or nothing.

Best Regards,

Phil.

Why does it have to always come down to 'my soul nite's better than your soul nite'?

Not once did i compare this nite to the Greatstone or any other nite.

All i intended to do was to give people an idea of what to expect to hear if they go.

I have no agenda in doing so ... i have nothing to do with the running of this or any venue.

I'm a punter .... i just go and dance.

No matter what you play ...... there'll always someone ready to put you down for it! We all know that!!

Hence the saying "you can't please all the people, all the time".

Does the fact that you've heard a record a lot make it any less of a good record?

Of course not.

What makes a GOOD record a GREAT record?

Well for me ..... it's a record that sounds as good the LAST time i heard it, as it did the FIRST time i heard it, no matter HOW MANY times i've heard it!

And in my oppinion ... those are five great soul records. But opinnions are like arseholes .... everyone's got one!

Come on guys .... the music is the star of the northern soul scene ... not any of us!

It's bigger than ANY VENUE .... ANY DJ ..... ANY EGO.

Surely that's one thing we can all agree on .....

Hi Joan,

Thanks for posting up the playlist from the last Soulvation. Have to agree with what you say about 'my soul nights better than your soul night', theres definitely no need for it.

All that was asked of Phil, by me anyway, politely i might add, was just to explain his musical preferences, no more. You v'e done that for him, a list that would grace any soul night in the land. Strangely though, most of which has been played at the Greatstone, some of which are still being played at the Greatstone, some have been 'gracefully retired after years of faithful service' at the Greatstone, you are bang on right, all very good records, quite a few 'classic' rare soul tracks,no question, no debate!!.This was n't about comparing club against club, it was about determining musical tastes, thats all.

I think that was where the confusion lay, with me anyway, i had an idea what sort of stuff Phil liked, and i also had an idea that we at the GS would have been likely to have played it,and he would have been likely to have heard it, especially if he had been on a number of occasions (by the way Phil introduce yourself to me, if you ever get over again) so end of story really, matter resolved.I have no interest, like yourself, in making comparisons with other clubs/nights, i'll leave that to people with more time, and different agendas. The scene, the music, is bigger than all of us, and anything positive we can bring to it , we should endevour to do.......I'm fillin up ere!!. I hope no offence has been caused by this lively debate, none was intended, by me anyway.I really think that this is what this forum should be all about, fair minded opinions.

And So.....the weekend....have a good un....wherever you choose to shuffle......Tony

hi phil

good luck with your night, as you will find it takes a lot of time and no small effort to convince people that what you are trying to do and type of music you want to play/hear/dance to is for them, it has taken a long time for the Greatstone to get to where it is with people travelling and a lot of regular attendess who like what we play and the venue which is a big contributor to the atmosphere. As jamie said we have never promoted the Greatstone as a rare night nor has soul or nothing, just somewhere to hear good music and meet nice people

i can tell you are a big 60's fan so a lot of my spots would not giveyou too much of what you would want to dance to being the 70's and 60's freak that i am  also the odd bit of 80's

good luck with your night and i hope over time you get what you hope for.

Mark, the good looking half of the greatstone partnership  also the modest one.

Guest THE BRIGADIER

THIS SATURDAY NIGHT 8th OCTOBER AT THE PALATINE CLUB, NORFOLK STREET, NELSON, LANCS. [behind morrisons] THIS IS ONLY THE SECOND NIGHT WE'VE HAD, MISSED LAST MONTH TO AVOID CLASHING WITH OTHER EVENTS. THE FIRST ONE WAS A CORKER, SO IF YOU MISSED IT DON'T MISS THIS. IT'S A FANTASTIC VENUE WITH A LARGE MAPLE DANCE FLOOR, SUPERB SOUND SYSTEM AND THE CHEAPEST BAR IN THE COUNTRY. NOT ONLY THAT BUT THE MUSIC POLICY IS STRICTLY 6Ts UPFRONT, RARE AND QUALITY SOUL. RECORD DEALERS ARE VERY WELCOME.

OK WE HAD A FEW PROBLEMS LAST TIME, MAIN ONE BEING IT WAS TOO DARK TO SEE THE RECORDS FOR SALE. THIS HAS BEEN SORTED, AS I'VE BEEN OUT AND BOUGHT SOME LIGHTING, AND SPECIAL TABLES FOR THE DEALERS WILL BE AVAILABLE THIS TIME.

THE CLUB HAS ALSO HAD A COMPLAINT FROM A LOCAL RESIDENT, [nothing to do with our night] BUT AS A RESULT THEIR EXTENTION HAS BEEN RECINDED. THIS UNFORTUNATELY MEANS WE HAVE TO FINISH AT ONE A.M. INSTEAD OF TWO A.M.

SO WE WILL BE RUNNING 8pm-1am £5 ON THE DOOR. I'M STILL HOPING PEOPLE WILL BE WILLING TO TRAVEL, BUT I WILL BE LOOKING FOR ANOTHER VENUE THAT CAN STAY OPEN LATER. IT REALLY IS A SHAME THOUGH BECAUSE THE VENUE IS SUPERB.

DJs ON THE NIGHT WILL BE :- JEFF BUCKLY, FRED KROL, PHIL KOWALSKI and CLIFF CAMFIELD. OUR VERY SPECIAL GUEST WILL BE MICK H. IF YOU CAN FIND ANOTHER VENUE WITH BETTER MUSIC PLEASE LET ME KNOW, BECAUSE THAT'S WHY I'VE STARTED THIS NIGHT. I'M TIRED OF TRAILING ROUND THE COUNTRY HOPING TO HEAR SOMETHING NEW AND QUALITY. BUT AM MAINLY VERY DISAPOINTED AND SKINT.

DIRECTIONS. FROM M65, EXIT AT JUNCTION 13.

AT ROUNABOUT TAKE THE A6068 FENCE ROAD

AFTER 200YDS. ROUNDABOUT. TAKE THE 1st LEFT NELSON

GO DOWN HILL - WATCH OUT FOR SPEED CAMERA - CONTINUE UNDER MOTORWAY,

TAKE THIRD TURING ON LEFT - NORFOLK STREET

CAR PARK BEYOND CLUB, OR IF FULL [i wish] CONTINUE TO END OF STREET, TURN RIGHT, AND PARK IN MORRISONS.

HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE FOR , FANTASTIC MUSIC, CHEAP BOOZE, TOP TUNES FOR SALE AND A VERY WARM WELCOME.:yes:

I'm totally confused now by this post. This playlist is an oldies list surely? Great records but not a "progressive up front" playlist surely? Not knocking the playlist at all, some fantastic records there and lots of 'em. But not what was described imo.

Phil, I'm from Burnley originally and have helped promote many a club there. Have we met. Did you ever get down to The Sparrow Hawk Hotel a few years ago? Hope it all goes well this weekend for you and the place is a success. Say Hello to Geoff Buckley et al for me wil you?

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Suppose your right really, don't think there are many records left that have not been played by somebody, at one time, in some place or other. What I was calling oldies, were the old standards that get played week in week out. Plus don't forget, I was off the scene for 20 years. That's a lot of catching up to do, musically, for me.

I have heard your name many times, think we may have met briefly at Rolls Royce club a couple of years ago. I will give Jeff your regards tonight.

Best Regards,

Phil.

Would've loved to have heard more of Mick H's spot ..... no doubt played a blinder as usual!

Will definitely be at the next one ...... no clashes please Philip

well how did it go did you get many in and playlists please.

Hi Mark,

The night went well, I was obviously disappointed in the numbers that came. But what it lacked in quantity, it made up for in quality. Met some fantastic people, and got some good feedback. I hope you had a good one at s.o.n. Will try and avoid any more dates clashing, I'm sure Steve and I can sort something out.

I would guess 60 punters in, and will try and get playlists if you want, but personally I think they are nagative rather than positive. But I'll see what I can do.

Best Regards,

Phil.
