My Dj Playlist From The Weekend

Pete S

Recommended Posts

Craig asked me to post up a list of the records I played on Friday night at the 44 so I am doing so, don't usually do this as someone always takes the p*ss so I'll just say, if you don't like oldies, don't read it.

And just for the record - every one of these was an original!

(This is over 2 spots)

TONY MIDDLETON - TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH - MGM ISSUE

ROSE BATISTE - HIT AND RUN - REVILOT (actually I lie, this was a pressing)

THELMA LINDSEY - PREPARED TO LOVE YOU - MAGIC CITY

CHAPTER FIVE - YOU CAN'T MEAN IT - UK CBS

WILLIE HUTCH - LOVE RUNS OUT - DUNHILL DJ

GEORGE BLACKWELL - CAN'T LOSE MY HEAD - SMOKE

TY KARIM - YOU REALLY MADE IT GOOD - ROMARK

DYNAMICS - I NEED YOUR LOVE - RCA DJ

NATURAL FOUR - I THOUGHT YOU WERE MINE - ABC DJ

WILLIE KENDRICKS - CHANGE YOUR WAYS - RCA DJ

DEAN COURTNEY - LOVE YOU JUST CAN'T WALK AWAY - MGM ISSUE

MORRIS CHESTNUT - TOO DARN SOULFUL - AMY DJ

FOUR PERFECTIONS - I'M NOT STRONG ENOUGH - PARTY TIME

EDWIN STARR - MY KIND OF WOMAN - RIC TIC

HERBERT HUNTER - I WAS BORN TO LOVE YOU - SPAR DJ

DONI BURDICK - BARI TRACK - SOUND IMPRESSION

STEINWAYS - YOU'VE BEEN LEADING ME ON - OLIVER DJ

DENNIS DELL - BETTER USE YOUR HEAD - UK CBS ISSUE

CAJUN HART - GOT TO FIND A WAY - WB DJ

VAN DYKES - SAVE MY LOVE FOR A RAINY DAY - MALA DJ

JOHNNY WYATT - THIS THING CALLED LOVE - BRONCO

CHUBBY CHECKER - YOU JUST DON'T KNOW - UK CAMEO PARKWAY

JACKIE EDWARDS - I FEEL SO BAD - UK ISLAND

LUTHER INGRAM - EXUS TREK - HIB

VIBRATIONS - CAUSE YOU'RE MINE - EPIC DJ

SAM WARD - SISTER LEE - GROOVE CITY

WILLIE TEE - WALKING UP A ONE WAY STREET - UK ATLANTIC

DENA BARNES - IF YOU EVER WALK - INFERNO DJ

GARNET MIMMS - LOOKING FOR YOU - UK UA DJ

YOUNGBLOOD SMITH - YOU CAN SPLIT - VERVE DJ

RUBY ANDREWS - JUST LOVING YOU - ZODIAC

STANLEY MITCHELL - GET IT BABY - DYNAMO DJ

ART FREEMAN - SLIPPING AROUND - UK ATLANTIC

SEVEN SOULS - I STILL LOVE YOU - OKEH

MONIQUE - IF YOU LOVE ME - ACETATE

The point is - there's about 8 requests in there of records I wouldn't have played personally but I'll always play a record if I've got it, and the people danced to them so whats up with that? The second set I did, when people had had a bit to drink, the floor was busy for every record, which is the idea as far as I'm concerned.

I always enjoy reading playlists from venue reports and the variety of what gets played is unbelievable. Whether it's from the Lifeline, The Orwell, The 100 Club, Oslo Soul, or Japanese radio stations, there appears to be a healthy regard for stuff that doesn't fit in the 'Top 500'. It was with this in mind that I thought it would be good to carry on this thread ( I know it's been done before but I can't find it) and see what people are spinning either in venues or radio stations around the world. I'll kick off with what David and myself played this weekend at the 3 Greyhounds Crossover night in Middlewich.

In no particular order:

BJB-I got to make you believe in me (Tee-TI)

Gangbusters - Just want you to know (North Country Records)

Maureen Bailey -taking my time with you (Embee)

James D Hall - I Wanna Get Into You (JDH)

LeroyBarbour-I Aint going nowhere (Frontiersman)

Headliners - Little Sister (Super M)

Brand New-Thousand Years (Duvern)

Trey J's - I Found It All In You (Tee Gem)

Cloudburst- I'm Loving you (Stormy monday)

Betty Boo - Say It Isn't So (UK Grapevine)

C.Coulter-Cant fight the feeling (Dyco)

Nia Johnson -I'll Be Your Pleasure (Mainline)

Ellipsis -People (Briarmeade)

Vise - Baby I Love You (Chocolate Mamma)

Flourescent Smogg- All My Life (WJ)

O'Jays - Just To Be With You (Little Star)

Norris Vine- Give in (Smile)

The Committee - Give In To The Power Of Love (NMI)

4 Dynamics -Things a lady aint suppose to do (peachtree)

Skip Jackson - I'm Onto You Girl (Dot-Mar)

Bobby Hutton- Watch where you're going (ABC)

Rotations - I've Got To Find Her (DeBrossard)

Willie Pickett- On the stage of life (Eastern)

Emulations - Move A Little Slower Girl (Emulate)

Connie Laverne -Cant live without you (GSF)

King Tutt - You've Got Me Hung Up (Fun City)

Dutch Robinson - Can't Get Along Without You (UA)

Papa Bear and the cubs -You're so fine (SMS)

Nobodies Children - Shardarp (Toeholt)

Milton Parker -Women like it harder (Closet)

Wanda McWilliams and Universal Truth - Gangster Boy (Appleray test press)

Great stuff Pete.Dave played some wonderful stuff as well.

I think the last record you played in your second set was Monique to a full dancefloor and as I said in a previous post I tried to follow it with Love by Gladys and cleared the dancefloor completely but thats inexpeience for you.I'll still play it next time though.

Looking back at that Craig, that was quite funny really...get them dancing for 3/4 of an hour then you come on and kill it dead with one record. It takes a lot of skill to do that :wicked:yes.gif:yes:

great night though mate, really enjoyed myself, bodes well for the future

Nearly the same set as I listened to using my 5xCD Player on random, wigan 1,2,3,4,5.

Get some obscurites thrown in to keep the punters on their toes.

Don't be so soft, did you not read the rest of the topic? Craig played ONE obscurity and killed the dancefloor that I'd had for 45 minutes. I played stuff for people to dance to, not to stand around scratching their heads to

Your right Pete , I then played some tried and tested classics and filled the dancefloor again with the next few then got cocky , played something a little less known again and everyone sat down on there arses again. There are some fantastic lesser known obscurities out there but they dont nessecerily get a good dancefloor reaction.

Hi Pete,

What excellent taste you and your dancing patrons have. I went to a "bit of do" on Friday night and danced to oldies for 4 hours. Thelma Lindsey - prepared to love you all the way jees i'd forgotten how fast that really was, knackered after.

once again excellent set - carry on the good work

at least everything you played could be classed as "northern" in the true sense of its origins

don't you just hate all this modern crap and that real slow r&b stuff

whoops - sorry - didn't really want to start one off

How about if you come and do a guest spot down here then Ted and show us what proper Northern soul is?

I've just been down the tip with Davina to throw some rubbish away right, I'm just standing there waiting for her to stop talking to the woman in the next car and an old bloke comes up to me and says "Excuse me, you do work here don't you?"

I looked completely shocked and said "No I don't work here"

Cheeky old bastard looked at me as if he didn't believe me so I said "these jeans cost £70 mate", he said "well you shouldn't wear expensive jeans to work" and I said "I DON'T F*CKING WORK HERE"!

I had on the aformentioned jeans, a Hugo Boss t shirt and a pair of imported Vans which cost me £60. That is not scruffy.

My girlfiend is now calling me THE BINMAN.

Great.

The above topic was also put on by Mr Smith

Pete not only are you deaf your obviously blind or don't own a mirror aswell :thumbsup: Only joking mate killed myself laughing at the above.

Pete, have you got a copy of Love by Gladys on O-Gee for sale?

It's not just a case of throwing records on in any order Chalky, you should know that. Some people aren't comfortable with even standing in front of a load of people let alone setting records up, working out a playlist etc. Not everyone is the same.

And so it should. Great record. I'll still play it next time , couldnt give a shit if it clears the floor or not.

You're starting to sound like 'them' Craig. :(

I can't understand this at all Craig, surely people who have paid to get in deserve a little respect. OK if you believe in a record give it another try but to say you don't give a shit if it clears the floor sounds daft to me, I thought a DJ's job was to give people a good night and get them up dancing :(

Exactly what I was thinking (and saying above) Karen.

When I posted this, I KNEW there would be people saying 'same old oldies', comments about 'dinosaurs', obviously these people can't read because I said I specifically played these records so that people would dance to them. The punters who came to this do didn't want to be 'educated', they wanted to get up and dance for Gods sake.

Ok Karen I probably worded it wrong , what i should of said was I'll give it another try and will be really pleased if I get a few up dancing to it but I wont worry too much if it no one does. Ill just put it down to experience and move on from there.

By the way how are your screens showing the threads at the moment. I have the opening starting part of the discussion (Petes playlist) then the last 2 additions from this morning and everthing underneath is in a long line in very small print.

It is the same on every thread I click on and has been since last night.

Hi tad,

I played this one in honour of Eugene Record. I've been playing it at home for a few days thinking that I'll play this out next chance I get. Sweet, feel good 70's dancer. :( Do you know the Gangbusters - Just want you to know. :(

I don't see a problem Pete. Your set was awesome, and as you say it was for a specific crowd for a specific reason. When I go out to '60's Oldies' nights that is the sort of set that I would like to hear and dance to.
