Dancefloor Disaters

Agreed  I personnally will not slag a dj to his face or behind his back i just wont go where he is BUT if someone does a really good spot then i will let them know Beggsy did brilliant spots both weeks as did Scotty and they were told so(Y). But as i say its human nature to protest and i dont think it is avoidable.

I wouldnt protest to be honest. I dont think its fair on the other half of the room that are enjoying it.

The majority of us should know what to expect from certain venues/dj's.

Vote with your feet is my policy. Plenty of other venues/dj's around.

thing is, if you protest the implication is that only your taste and your view is right, surely rick?

if someone comes on and plays the buzzcocks fair enough (though i like the buzzcocks to be fair) or if they play obscure stuff at a night which is advertised as oldies, maybe...otherwise you sort of have to put up with it on the basis that other people there might like what they're hearing - just don't go back again!

Why is it wrong to be 'educated'?

We have all been and will continue to be 'educated' on this scene. That is one of the marvels of the soul scene that everyone can be surprised by a new record or piece of knowledge. I thought that was part of the appeal?

I want to know more all the time.

Shane

Totally agree with you Shane. I don't DJ but have no problem with a Dj clearing a floor- how many times does a DJ break a new record to a full dance floor. If it takes a few cleared floors to break a quality new sound then I'm all for it.

BTW I've always viewed the scene as an education and expect this from a nighter

I dont think my view is the only one thats right Dan its just my opinion. If you played your Magnetics would i dance? too fecking right i would!!! if someone played say stemens express would i dance again too fecking right i would!! and if i go into a newies room and hear something i like i will dance to it! it just makes me so  that certain djs think they have the god given right to push onto us what they think is or should be "northern soul" this scene is not a closed shop we all have the right to be part of what we love. I for one WILL vote with my feet and my money. In the long run i suppose the only difference i will make is to myself!

There are 2 djs on the scene who i wont name but you will never see me at any event they are at, both with the attitude "you will listen to what i play" At the end of the day all im saying is yes break new sounds but dont play what you want us to hear, play what we want to hear! Be aware of whats going on down on the dancefloor. How many people have been to a nighter the place is buzzing and all of a sudden the dance floor is empty for an hour???? It can spoil the whole night for the majority of "punters" (sorry Pikeys).

very good point that byrney. i wasnt around in the 'good old days' cos i am only 31 but I am sure the big records of today were played to empty dancefloors to begin with. This opinion rips apart the belief that dj's should always play to the dancefloor. Afternoon Karen XX

Afternoon Rick

Shall I add my twopence worth so I can get torn apart too ?

yeah alright then I will hehehe

I agree with Rick, to my mind a DJ is there for my amusement, I paid to get in to a venue to be entertained not to go back to school.

I don't mean that I don't want to hear anything new because I do, but to have a DJ stand up for an hour playing utter tosh that he/she thinks is just brill but the dance floor just don't want is not being a DJ IMO. By all means play stuff that isn't known but slip them in between records that make you want to stay on the floor, that way you are more likely to have your new finds accepted if they are good enough. I will dance to a sound I have never heard before if it's got that something magic about it that makes me want to shift my backside onto the dance floor.

Like Rick said, I have been to venues where the floor has been full to have someone come on and clear it but instead of trying to get it back, he has carried on regardless with no thought whatso ever to the people that have paid to come in.

I wouldn't be so rude as to say to someone they played shite but would be warey of attending a venue that advertised them unless there were pleanty of other names on the rosta that I knew for sure I would like as well.

i'm not that much older shane (though more than i would like) but i think it was maybe slightly different in days gone by.

my 'generation' were probably the last major influx of young people onto the northern scene ie early to mid 80s, ex-mod revivalists/scooterists.

at that time the demographic was much younger (although compared to, say, the rave scene, it was ancient) - you had nighters where the seasoned pros were probably in their early 30s and there were plenty of people in their teens and 20s (obviously some older ones too).

with the natural energy of youth added to (I don't like to talk about this but it's no good pretending it wasn't a factor) the recklessness of youth (ie a lot of people were on gear) the dancefloor was always more buzzing. if you're young, enthusiastic and speeding your tits off you don't want to come off the floor for anything...i certainly stayed on there pretty much whatever was played and to that extent i think it was probably harder to clear a floor 20 years ago than it is now. nowadays people probably quite like a break!

i know people will say 'this is bollocks, i dance as much now as i did then' and maybe that's true but the pace of the whole thing has declined, and naturally so.

no that's all fair rick, i think it's about attitude really - both djs and punters.

there have always been arrogant djs and i remember being talked down to by them as a kid. you're probably more inclined to enjoy seeing them land flat on their face.

someone like, say, ian clark, or cliff steele, or ady croasdell, who've given a lot to the music and are plainly really just fans with a set of decks and no pretentions, you're more inclined to be open to their new sounds.

or is that bollocks? i dunno! :P

I agree with what you say there Dan. God you make me feel old tho!!! Im 46 but can still boogie and still love doing it. In the Old Days your right everyon was off their tits but whats changed there  I remember first dancing to 9 times out of 10 at wigan and thinking fecking brill!!! now i think OMG what was i doing???? I also remember dancing to Frank Wilson and thinking fecking brill!!! and i still think its brill! but i will also dance to things like Lamont Dozier, Gene Page sounds i first heard at 100 club years ago.

Ive just got copies of got to pay your dues and let her go oldies but goodies and looking for Marie Knight i think its called come on baby hold my hand? which i first heard played 2 weeks ago at Steam in the R&B/Popcorn room. So as i say and will continue to say i dance to and buy what i like not what someone tells me too

I apologise for using the word educate! I am a teacher by trade and thats where it probably comes from. Maybe I should use a different language like for those who live in a timewarp or narrow minded individuals who only want to hear an hour of Wigan/ Stafford etc etc.

I get educated everyday with the next thing in life that comes along. Yes I have memories and like to reminisce once in a while. I just put one record on (The first one and it cleared the floor) If it was a rubbish record I should have been shot at dawn but IMO Judson Moore- Push and pull - is not abad record but would like other peoples opinion about it to decide"Am I a crap DJ or not" for putting it on.

steady on!

was only saying that the concept of 'education' is a red rag to some, especially your 35-year vet, 1000-yard starers

i agree personally, i like being educated soul-wise (and always am being) and the word don't bother me in the slightest. but some people think it's patronising, that's all

maybe shane was right with introduced

anyway, once you get into a debate over semantics the whole thing is gone and you disappear up your own arse so i bail out here!

i think you should have stayed in the vein you started in Steve .... Dundee isn't the most receptive of do's (i'm sure even the promoters know that ) but i liked the tune personally ... a lot more enjoyable than the showmen and nolan porter

Think my points are valid read it again!!! you take the pats on the back if you play well, but can't take it on the chin if you don't. Be serious who wants to go on a night out to look at an empty dance floor!!! stuck in timewarp was another comment i'm more than likely younger than the lot of you. And lets face it you will never get a better northern soul record than a good top quality stomper!!! After all Is northern soul not a dance music scene? If your clearing the dance floor alot during your set your not dropping your tunes properly or got the vibe rite, Again string a good set together new rnb oldies whatever people will dance, and thats what your paid to do, if your not doing this best invite your mates round on a saturday night and give them an education!!!

On the bright side, music is a form of brainwashing thats a fact if people come often enough and your clever enough you can twist them round, the simple fact is you are basicly breaking new tunes to an audience with limited knowledge, Now thats what djs dream of is it not so here's your chance stick with it your the man!!!

Bit of a split personality.

Looking into your other posts, you seem to have a bit of a chip on your shoulder about DJs and 'Cartels'.

Are you a Chocolate Chip Cookie?

Or just Crackers?

One of the DJs at 'Back Beat' told me it was common practice to be shouted at whilst DJing in the South (where he's from) and he was kacking himself because he expected the same in the North. Thankfully this isn't the case and he played an excellent spot.

One of the things that I object to is generalisation. Please be a lot more specific.

Personally I think you are talking out your backside and will not be able to supply any facts to back up the above.

The Djs name is Kieron O'Hara and he DJs in the London area . He told my wife that he was really worried about the way he was going to be received as it was the first time he had DJ'ed in the North and didn't know what kind of sounds that people would respond favourably to...

When he was told to play what he thought was worthy of playing, he was suprised as he had experienced a lot of hostility in London when playing something that wasn't the norm, with people approaching the decks and shouting abuse at him.

Is that enough information to back it up, Soulsmartarse?

This discusion is getting us no-where im afraid that those who want to "educate" are an ilk to them-selves. The saying goes "Knowledge is power" and those people who have the knowledge also think they have the Power. They think are better than the rest of us, well thats bollox.

Ive nowt more to say about this, I will carry on the way i have been and if i dont like a sound then i dont like it!

Okay the question was what track would refill the floor after an unknown floor clearer.

Answer - Lou Johnson - Unsatisfied  Don't know anyone who finds it objectionable and is a nice easy paced dancer.

I hate the saying 'end of' But Unsatisfied, satisfied?

I don't dance that often now particularly if the bar or record room are too far from the dancefloor but I have paid as much to get in as others does my opinion count at all?

I like to be educated, I like to hear something new / different, I wont like it all but that's cool. I used to love Farleys Rusks but I have tried new things since then not liked them all but now I eat all sorts of things I didn't eat years ago.

Nice to see the 'Parachute' count down earlier in the thread remember the mind is like a parachute works best when its open

Got to admit Joe, not that I'm doubting what was said to your good wife (I daren't she knows what I look like and would hit me blush.gif ) but I do find what he said a little strange. I've DJ'd at most of the Soul clubs in London, and nobody has ever shouted abuse at me, and I'm not aware of it happening to anyone else in the London area. I do know that John Weston had abuse shouted at him once, but he recognised my voice, so that doesn't count

dont know about shouting but some need rotten veg thrown at em from time to time blush.gif

only shouting incident i remember was at the rocket when the music stopped after a record and some nutter shouted out " levine youre a wanker " from across the dancefloor.

did tiggle me.

said nutter has/had a ponytail and was last seen at the dome a couple of weeks back.im sure a few must know who i mean

When I went to Fleetwood a few years ago when Willie Hutch & Sandie Sheldon were on Ian Levine did a spot prior to them coming on on the Saturday and played Sad Girl by Carol Anderson and as the record was finishing someone in the crowd shouted out loud "Sad girl , Sad boy, SAD TWAT"

Ill never forget the look on his face it was priceless. wicked.gif

I'm shocked by that and sorry to hear it. Well not about being called Soulsmartarse, thats quite funny.

Yes I've been around when some DJs have been yellow or red carded, but I doubt thats just a London thing. Surely that happens up north?

I was recently speaking to a northern DJ/collector fairly recently about the scene down here and his view was that most people down south made an extra effort to get on because the scene was so small. Up north there are loads of dos on and you have loads of choice where to go, but down south there aren't. So if you fall out with somebody down south one week you've got an almost 50/50 chance that you're going to run into them next week. So there's more reason to be sociable.

One of the worst incidents I've seen was at Prestatyn when 2 old soulies who had just been introduced by a mutual friend started a proper old row about football within 10 minutes.

Ady, my mum just rang, she's about 50 miles away from me, she said is there any chance you can make your signature bigger - she cant see the time that the Dome starts on my screen from there. Bless, its her eyes, you know thumbup.gif

 Dave, now this is the truth mate, when i put this signature thingy on & i saw how big it was, i went back & tried for about an hour to reduce the size, been back a few times, but it wasn't having any of it. So i tried to change it from red to a less conspicuous colour, i did fancy the blue, no still not having any of it. The only thing i can change is the avatar picture, so i'm having great fun with that. Each time i try & change my signature you'll know cause i'll change my little picture. And dont worry Ted, got plenty of records to go. I'm going to start putting my reggae records on there next, so keep watching.

I did give me password to Tommy to change it, but all he done was post up my so called "favourite sound", which i must say is not "WAKE UP TO THE F*****G SUNSINE GIRL"

I thank you.
