I thought someone would have started this thread but as they haven't I will!

There were a lot of very happy people at the Oxford Soul Night on Saturday 4th June. This is the last one until October 1st and will be missed by everyone who attends, I'm sure - roll on October!

There were people dancing from start to finish to some great music and there was something for everyone.

Rich - started the night off in style - with his DJ debut (playlist has been posted - check it out) and he tells me that he has another offer from another soul club to go and DJ for them - careful he'll start charging for personal appearances soon!! Sorry we were late but it was Kat's fault - ha ha!!

Jon Willis then took over from Rich at nine ( or was it 9.10 Jon - couldn't get Rich off?) and as ever a great set - started with Little Queenie and his set included Jon's favourite "Love Slave" and many more. I'm sure Jon will post his playlist soon???

Charlie Mc then took over from Jon and also played a good mix of stuff and everyone continued to dance and have a great time. He had lots of compliments on the night!!!

Neil - took over from Charlie and the tunes he played again kept the people dancing and happy. I'm sure that Neil will post his play list??? I'm sure Neil had lots of great compliments too!

Last but not least Maz took over the late shift (playlist posted) and started his set with Pow Wow - Manny Corchado for me (thank you). Finishing the night off in style.

Oxford Soul Club has gone from strength to strength, with a very friendly crowd of people, a great dance floor, cheap beer and above all, everyone wants to hear great soul - which is what we all got on Saturday.

Well done to all involved. Keep up the good work.

Hi Ray, great little write up which sums up Oxford perfectly

will post my playlist in a bit but before that just wanted to thank everyone who attended Oxford, it was bloody brilliant.

Oxford has evolved over the years from a standard oldies event in it's fledgling days into a credible soul night out where you hear the most soulful music played be it rare or not.

that's down to the organisers doing what is demanded by their paying punters. and it has worked brilliantly. well done to Mazz, Del, Steve,Jon, Charlie, Tez, and now Ritchie for moulding the event to suit your customers taste. you can tell its good when you get folks travelling long distances to be there and it doesn't matter who the guest DJ is either, they have a loyal following at Oxford and good luck to them in the future. from a guest DJs point of view it's a pleasure to play music to such a warm crowd.

best regards

Neil

Wow, just take a look at those playlists , every one a gem. What a great night again at Oxford soul club, have to say a special well done to Richie , first time at Oxford but just slotted in so effortlessly ---------a star, Jon,Charlie,Neil and Maz all brilliant sets that would have graced any soul club anywhere !!

Seems every time we go there we meet more fantastic people, and on that note we sincerely hope that Les is feeling a little better, makes the effort and just smiles ( and drinks ) all night although on Saturday night had to leave quite early, sums up Oxford for me though , love it to bits.

Thanks Maz for playing Archie at the end ( thought you'd forgot you old bugger )

Roll on October , hope to see you out and about before then

Take good care

We all had a fantastic night at Oxford. All the travellers from Banbury loved it. Got there nice and early to catch Richie's spot, and he did play a great set! Just one record you missed off your playlist (not trying to be an anorak), The Citations (Keep the Faith), on Ballad. Fancy forgetting to put that one on the list  .

Top set of tunes from Jon, our Guest DJ Neil Self, Maz kept the dance floor happy all night!

I've had a couple of days off work with 'man flu' want to make sure I am fit this weekend for Cleethorpes. I certainly enjoyed playing my set, will stick playlist up later. After the nurse has given me my tea!

Hopefully, see you all at Banbury on 9th July. (Guest DJ Rob Moss & Lou Wood aka Mrs. Soul).

We need to drum up support and see if we could have a niter in the big Ballroom.... Now that would be truly amazing, can you imagine Oxford having its own allniter?!? Fantastic venue and its just begging for it :thumbup:shades.gif:rolleyes::wicked:

Yes, it looks great but it would take a LOT of people to make that room look busy. We can hope... thumbsup.gif

YES,

YOUR ABSOLUTELY RIGHT JERRY,A MINIMUM OF 450 .AS OXFORD ITSELF IS A PRETTY SOULESS PLACE WE WOULD BE RELYING ON A AWFUL LOT OF TRAVELLERS.

THE MANAGEMENT KEEP ASKING US TO HOLD OUR XMAS EVENT IN THE MAIN BALLROOM.BUT PERSONNALLY I'M MORE THAN HAPPY WITH WHAT WE'VE ACHIEVED SO FAR.

IT'S A FABULOUS ROOM,WITH A BRILLIANT DANCE FLOOR AND A WONDERFUL ATMOSPHERE AND A GREAT CROWD.

ANYWAY YOU'LL BE BEHIND THE DECKS NEXT YEAR AND I'M PRETTY SURE YOU WILL REALLY ENJOY YOURSELF.

SEE YOU AT THE NEXT SOULFUSION.

VERY BEST WISHES

what a great idea, but it would need a lot of marketing and PR, planning and organising to make it work. It may start off small but could soon grow into a great all-nighter.

I agree it is a great venue and just crying out for it.

Just a thought - What about an all-dayer instead?

One week late, and THREE attempts later,

I hate Aol. !!

Many thanks to Neil for stepping in to guest for us at short notice, never fails to deliver, (see playlists)

Tell Anne next time we will find her a seat away from the entrance, hahahahaha

MANY many thanks to Dave for the video, wonderful studies of our regulars at play.

My only worry of the evening was that the floor seemed slow to fill,

(normally fills early and stays that way)

Maybe we are victims of our own 'atmosphere' in that we are all friends that walk through the door.

Lots of chatting and socialising, which is great as I am the worst offender.

To paraphase Winston Churchill,

"Less Jaw Jaw, More Floor Floor",,,,,,:D:yes::yes::D

Loads of 'Newbies in (I love 'em)

all with positive reactions to our scene, (to-days newbies, tomorrows soulies)

Including my Daughter and 8 of her Uni friends, and yes I DID buy them all a drink, TWICE

what good is money if you can't spend it on those you love.

Heartfelt thanks to those who come to our nights and give us the encouragement to put them on.

As 'travellers' ourselves we try to create a night that we would wish to go to ourselves,

(always open to comments to improve them)

Right ! better get off as I am waffling,

Roll on October the First for our next Paaarrty !!!!

with Jamie Trundle guesting (not that long away)

Hi Del, hope you all got home safely on Friday, lovely write up on the Emperor ballroom, have to own up to having a sneaky dance in there whilst waiting for a pint at the last one.

What a floor, what a room, absolutely begging for it, but as you say it's the numbers game that dictates.

Everyone put your thinking caps on, see what we can come up with.

Until October

Take good care

BRING IT ON !!!!!!!! Somehow?yes.gif

Great post Delthumbsup.gif

Although this is off topic it has been mentioned on here, ( Kat and Ray read the first line, bottom paragraph !!!!)

Sorry, may be a long post.

The Emperor Ballroom.

On Saturday night the Social Club wanted us to use the Emperor Bar instead of the normal one for the Empress. They also left open the partition door that isolates it from the ballroom, hence that everyone that went for a drink saw the fabulous Emperor Ballroom.

This is what their website says :

"The Emperor Ballroom holds 500 people and has the largest suspended dance floor this side of London at a massive 24 metres by 15 metres. It has separate bar facilities and seating out area. It forms the ideal function room for wedding receptions, parties, dance competitions, live bands and conferences."

The Empress Ballroom we use holds 160 and we average 100 plus (120 is ideal) and therein lies the dilemma.

Ever since we have used Rover Club, Maz and I have agonised over the larger ballroom. God have we AGONISED. Every time I look at it a hollow feeling comes to my heart wishing we could use it.

We have thought of any way to use it, Dayers, Niters, Rallies, Joint nights. We know it's crying out for it. I even said to Maz about having our 5th. Anniv. in it and I would personally pay any loss on the night. Ever Rovers' want us to use it. ( they take more money with us than the Ballroom Dancing nights)

120 plus people in The Empress equals a wonderful atmosphere, 200 people in The Emperor would make it look empty and not do it the justice it deserves.

Anyone with any thoughts, you know my house is open.

Here are a couple of photos of The Emperor, (ignore the chairs) stolen from their website again, it is on two levels with the seating approx. 4 feet above the dance floor looking down on it. One day hopefully, we WILL run an Oxford Soul Night in The Emperor.

I too think we are a very talented bunch of individuals - and between us I'm sure we could make this a great night.

I'm also sure that between us we have enough friends and contacts to get some great DJ's and enough people to to attend as long as we get the marketing and the date for the event right?

I will put my hand in the air and offer my services to help with the PR and Marketing and for the designing of flyers, posters etc

Is anyone else able to offer their services and if so - what they can do? (keep it clean, SMUT-FREE zone!)

How much would it cost to hire the big hall? If we make more money over the bar would they give you a discount on the cost?

I think we need to have a meeting - I would suggest another BBQ but I know Del doesn't like them?!!!

Perhaps we could meet in the pub one Sunday afternoon and discuss the options - the if's, but's and maybe's?

As Kat said - lets try and get this off the ground - It could be GREAT!!

Take care, see you all soon
