anyone went to inky club approx 1972 - 74ish wonder if you have any old photos ? any djs who played there ? favourite tracks etc. the club is now up for sale with planning permission for houses , anyway they will be pulling the old place down. thought of putting together a cd also with a brief history of the northern soul years . many thanks

Guest John Poole

I remember djing at Inky on many occassions in that period

I remember a ginger haired guy stood on stage looking at the records being played and occasionaly making the comment I've got a white demo of that

My first encounter with Mark Fletcher we went on to be great friends

The most regular guest dj was the late Nev Wherry (another good friend)

I think I have a tape of one of his sets there which was given to me by another mate from the days there

If I can find it I will run you a CD off

Also another good club at the time was Bonds main

Chesterfield was a real hot bed of soul in those days

I was a frequent Inky social club attender at soul nites and Johnny Wright used to dj there with Nev and I think Roger Banks dj d there too.

I remember Terry and Alan Dean turning up on there scooters with Arthur Dudley(RIP) and forming the spirals scooter club which I think was the first scooter club formed in Chesterfield around that time. I remember it going around 1977-78.

Top place though . jny 1

Inky Social Club was definitely still going in 79/80 as I definitely went then. I remember Roger Banks as he was going out with a friend called Pauline at the time. Can't remember Nev djing there but definitely remember him at KGB Sheffield - have photo evidence somewhere - still miss the man.

Remember Arthur Dudley there but he was too high (in a social sense) to be bothered to talk with us small fry. :)

Was Terry a small, wiry man with red short hair?

Inkey Social, Wow !!

Used to play there alongside a young John Poole ( when he had hair ) and the legend and true gentleman that was Nev Wherry.

Wednesdays I think Spike, Temple Normanton was Tuesdays ( If memory serves) Got on the Bus to Inkey with my records and always used to get bothered by a kid ' can I look at your records mister ?? ' He would get off and sit outside the Social listening to the music - Tim, if you are reading this ?!?!

Met some lifelong freinds at Inkey. Johnny Wright, Glyn Maycock ( sorry if its spelt wrong ).Doz is still around, been to The Phoenix a couple of times !! Spike, when he was a snot nosed little kid ( no change there then ?!?! Lol !! ) All the Chesterfield 'Massive' where there week after week. No entry unless you had your card, the old bloke on the door was very strict ( unless you knew him !!).

Tiny floor in front of the stage and got a ramshackle collection of lookers on all fascinated by this new breed of young kids and their love of Soul and the frantic somewhat athletic Dances ( 40 years ago perhaps )

Still reference it in my sets as it was a major influence, Nev always brought something new - remember 'Wall of Sound' ?? Not a Casino or Samanthas but has a special place in the Heart !!

When DJing there the one track that stood out head and shoulders was The Yum Yums - Big Thing. Still invokes the memories of the little clubs around Chesterfield whenever I hear it.

Nev Wherry introduced me to JJ Caillier - Pusherman ( not out and out NS but an awesome track) and he also gave me a copy of The Crow - Your Autumn Of Tomorrow ( He had 2 copies )

All the names of the local boys and girls as said before - Alan Dean ( bessy mate) and his annoying little bro Terry Lol !! Chris and Andy Hewitt, Derek Phanthom, Sue Morris and Tilley, Marie Wilde, Maria Bowdler, Jo-an ( my other half). John Poole, and of course Chalky !!

Dragged some of the Samanthas crowd across occassionally. Rob Wigley !! when he was a skinny liitle kid. Rod Salway and Julie, Jez Murray and Gigs ( first met him there I think ) All the Weavers ( Too many to name ) Mona when he was No. 1 in Chesterfield ( Still is XXX)

Back later when I think of more names ....

Hmmmmm... I'm convinced I went there - where exactly was it? Was it going about 1975/6?

Where the hell am I thinking of then? Was there a pub at North Wingfield on the roundabout of Tibshelf Road/Chesterfield Road/Heath Road - sure we went to a soul night upstairs there... or is that another brain cell that has since died?

At Inky Social I knew Mark Fletcher and all his crowd - went to Wigan with them lot - got a great story about Eddie Bobka and number plate for Richard Searling. Was waiting at Matlock at Vince Lavelles house for us all to go in a convoy... they were late due to them flashing a number plate to an unmarked police car - ooops... hilarious - knicker wetting funny - when the turned up and told us what happened!

Is Eddie still knocking about venues in Chesterfield? I'm gonna have to get to a night in town sometime and catch up with everyone.

Hollingwood Hotel was late 80's into the 90's, I was one of the residents there. Manlove's were the promoters, mainly Dave then later Keith.

Happy times at Inky Social

As Tezza mentions Johnny (not) Wright lead the decks 76/77/78 Nev was there a lot, as it was mid-week-Wednesdays seem to fit the bill they had packed nights all the time with loads of travellers. I used to travel to Wigan / St Ives with Johnny, Glynn, Bob Bulloch (Ian "Bully" Bullochs older brother) and Phil

all as mentioned above

I think it stopped in 1980 A great small club

the likes of which will never be seen again !

sorry its going

Cole Johnny Wright's a bit more elusive... but turns up at the Winding Wheel.

Eddie still does the local Circuit. He comes to our Do regularly at The Phoenix with Tommo and Andy and is also a regular at North Wings for Steve Browm/Pete Taylors Do. Yep, he was at Brid and will be at Scarbro. When I see him I'll tell him to search you out at Scarbro if you are going !?!?!.

The Manloves stopped promoting Soul Do's now. Hollingwood closed and they moved to Barrowhill for a short while. Thats now gone - Stuart Bowler took it on and moved it to Oxcroft.

Be great to see you sometime. Talking to a few folk and gonna try to get in touch with the old crowd and get them all back together for a reunion. I'll let you know.

We used to meet Nev at Inky Social and when the KGB All nighters were on in Sheffield we would arrange to be on a certain train arriving in Sheffield and Nev would drive down from the old place and pick us up at the station.

The train from Chesterfield was always packed with soulies. We go to the warm up first and they kick us out about 11pm where we would go to the chippy and 'borrow' 😎 some pints of milk from the diary at the side, before returning to the KGB for the all-nighter.

Great times and memories.

Thanks for comments inky social club is still there it’s a builder merchant now the car park and the clubs  main buildings is the same as it was back in the late 70s

I pass it most days Sav and it always brings back great memories for me personally. I don't really do the oldies venues now so haven't been to the Hollingwood, Hasland etc. just been sticking to venues with the newer stuff (60's, xover, modern etc), but I might give them a whirl as their only 5 - 10 minutes away.

Pauline at middle/back... Isn't that Nocker gazing up at Nev ¿?  Graham in bottom rh in blue/white striped top. Remember when Mona took the toilets as bluey apothecary one midweek. Bout the night Nev played Gone With The Wind to massive acclaim. No mention of little Ann here, last saw Glynn Murcock Sammys do in 89, Pete Hayes in all. Wendy,  no mention of Christine Hindmarsh, ended up with Vin. Bout Mick Harris, Lynn Everidge. Fk, not seen Terry Dean, (Mr Bright eyes), since 78 anat would've been Inky Social.....

Just down from Sportsman/Grassmoor,  76/77,  was Graham's, Jez's, Bright Bro's 'Right Track Soul Club, for some obscure reason known, then, as N. Wingfield, was Fri day night, went regular with our Pete. For sure Fridays cos Doz n Rob Sal were urging us to take a seat up to Casino later.  We eventually went up later 77.

PS Tezza, I had Pman, JJ Callier, sold it to either Rob Wig and Tatts in 93 or to Arthur 04/5.
