Mixology - The Definitive Salsoul Mixes 3Cd

Recently one of the last remaining truly independent record labels from the Disco and Boogie years, Salsoul Records, was sold to a music rights company at the beginning of this year. Since all previous Salsoul comps which I'd done have now all been deleted, I decided it would be nice to try and do a definitive package of all the key original mixes and have them all in one package and sequenced in chronological order from the dates the originals came out. Also there was a part of me that thought that this could be the last time that these brilliant tracks could get a physical release, so when I heard that the company could potentially be sold last year I swooped in a did a deal for this package.

Many will already have many of 'em but probably on several different comps, so if you want 'em all on one comp, now's your chance and all for less than a tenner from Amazon!......

Yippee. That's the idea.

You won't be disappointed. A beautiful slice of 70's/80's Soul Music history for under a tenner? Loleatta Holloway, Eddie Holman, Skip Mahoney, Double Exposure, Inner Life (featuring Jocelyn Brown), Moment Of Truth, First Choice, Ripple, Love Committee.......do the maths LOL.....

Also I'm hoping that younger people will get into this and discover this music for the first time - there's a healthy appetite out there, expecially internationally, so hopefully there'll be something for everyone in the three and half hours of tunes.

Could be the last time on physical too, so handy to have on the shelves for sure methinks!

Yep, absolutely. Bundled clearances seem to be OK these days. "Philly Re-Grooved 1" did 15% on digital so it seems to be creeping up.........

Highly unlikely Malc, since Salsoul was purchased by the Verse Music Group earlier this year and they evidently have their own plans for the future (they also bought West End Records last year). Even though I did this deal with the old Salsoul last year, it still made sense to co-operate with the new owners in terms of being able to use the logo etc, etc and it was quite a struggle to even get this album out, so I really don't know what the future plans are.

I did actually more or less reissue most of the catalogue back in 2004 via my own Suss'd Records and I now note that most of those releases are now creeping up in value which makes sense as much of the material will probably never be available again on a physical format, so it's probably worth bargain-hunting to see what can be picked up. I note that the "Crossover Flavas" album will now cost £23.29 if you snag the only copy available!

That's one of the main reasons I wanted a last bite of the cherry really. The key mixes have never been assembled on one package before so it seemed like the right time to do it and I'm glad I did, painful though it was. At least anyone who's into this brilliant label now has 3 years to pick up many of the key goodies on one package at probably a tenth of the cost of getting them via different releases. Probably the best tenner anyone could spend IMO.

Join the club Peter. I've got multiples of everything in numerous vinyl formats (including Jamaican 7" presses on Double Exposure's "Ten Percent" and Silvetti's "Spring Rain"), so I know exactly what you mean.

These days I prefer to make it from the sofa to the fully alphabetised CD shelves and simply pull out the one package rather than climbing the stairs to the record room and spending several hours pulling out vinyl and then several more hours re-filing the bastards!

OK, these were back in the days of the notorious Fred Dove - WEA's Club Promotion man from the mid 70's to mid 80's. Fred was pretty stingy and very selective about his mailing list so there weren't so many of these pressed. I haven't seen that one but I would have definitely grabbed it for sure, since it's got several key tracks on it (Lamont Dozier, both CJ & Co's, George Benson and the Trammps). I started getting 'em towards the end of the 70's (when I finally got on Fred's list) and there's a few that have U.S. only tracks on them, so it's always worth checking the track listings.

I see you like "Date With The Rain" too. You've obviously got great taste!

Love EK's "Date with the Rain" and you gotta hear Frankie Gee's version on Claridge - got a 7" of that but you can get it on one of those early Al Kent compilations...

Yep, I think it's important to conserve great recordings too. Luckily we're well served in the UK with some cracking specialists like Ace/Kent, Expansion, Cherry Red, Demon, Big Break etc, etc. The UK is far more active in preserving music then any other country in the world these days and hopefully long may that continue!

Also couldn't help noticing that it's even cheaper than it was last week - you can now get it for £8.99 inc P&P which @ £3 a disc has to be one the bargains of the century! It's never been better for buyers....

Which leads me onto a question about the Salsoul label in 1980 - out went the likes of Double Exposure and Loleatta Holloway and in came the likes of Inner Life and Logg. All equally excellent, and Salsoul did a much better job of coping with the emerging boogie-sound than Philadelphia International but why such a complete reinvention?:

Good choice Steve! I think the reason why Salsoul kept on the ball for the 10 years from '75 - '85 was because they were constantly in touch with the clubs and the major U.S. DJ's and remixers at the time and this kept their ears attuned to the constantly evolving sounds from the clubs. Just the list of the remixers they used showed how the label evolved over that period - Tom Moulton, Walter Gibbons, Bobby 'DJ' Guttadero, Larry Levan, Francois Kevorkianm Shep Pettibone etc, etc. Also they started off in Philly basically using MFSB and producers Norman Harris and Vincent Montana Jr and other Philly production teams for the Loleatta Holloway, Double Exposure, Salsoul Orchestra, First Choice, Eddie Holman, Love Committee, Instant Funk etc, etc records whilst always watching other producers emerge mainly from New York like Randy Muller, Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams, Stan Lucas, Greg Carmichael etc, etc.

Philly International were routed from much earlier, 1972 in fact, and had the bulk of their hits throughout the 70's and were much more self-contained in Philadelphia with less exposure to outside producers than Salsoul. Also PIR were not as connected with clubs, remixers and DJ's as much as Salsoul but more towards the desires and control of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff who, to be fair, were probably more focussed on sustained long-term artist careers and international successes like the O'Jays, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, Billy Paul etc, etc.

The amazing thing about both labels is that they both maintained their independence until earlier this year when Salsoul changed hands after 36 years of being owned by the Cayre brothers. PIR continues to be 100% owned and controlled by Kenny and Leon.

Watch out for the forthcoming Philly International 10CD box set compiled by Ralph Tee which should be with us by October plus a 3CD PIR Re-Edits and Remixes package coming shortly and a comprehensive 3CD Tom Moulton set including 16 new Tom Moulton PIR mixes coming for January next next year!
