"LET NOBODY LOVE YOU" by Virginia Blakley. what an absolutely penetrating tune, during the terror of "hurricane katrina" a few years ago, a friend of mine told me that a dealer he knows, had a couple of boxes (25 copies per box) water damaged by the hurricane consequently washing off the labels, completely, so if anybody has a copy in this condition and the vinyl is okay, if they're willing to give it away for free & gratis!! So how do you explain yourself to someone. I noticed I kept refering to Ric-Tic cos that's what started me. However I have quoted others it's not yer favourite record it's how do you present yourself to other people. *Anecdote alert* Somebody's mother, a bloke I grew up with and was active on the scene, well she used to love Tobi Legend. I mean really love it and she'd have been not that much younger than us older ones now and she absolutly loved in then and after all if the corrupt media had of counted the record sales properly it would have hit the charts. Because they considered such a concentration of sales in the North amounted to payola they refused those sales figures in their 'chart' calculations. Which was almost penalising the records twice because bigotry or exclusion kept many, not all, of them out of the American charts of the day So the point of that is we don't consider what would feel fresh and alive to them. You would seem to have forgot. There's records I play still (personal disclosure! Oldies Freak!), and I can feel the floor remember the lighting remember how I felt. If we look at the public as pop based from my own personal memory hearing Sweet Darling by Jimmy Soul Clark could maybe do something for the poor lost souls, I feel I can present it to them because it would appeal to a pop sensibility, after all commercial success is what they sought as well, whilst being that tad stronger. Drenched in emotion and vunerable but strong. Brilliant back beat etc etc. Listening to it now Many tunes we listen to seem to be able to just stop before they drop into the dread canyon of over sentimentality. Suppose that's the emotional rollercoaster this stuff we listen to takes us on. Dancing along that edge. True love sugar free. Sure that's in a song So don't forget how my mate's mum loved Tobi Legend. Just to be kind you may start the test again. But I wouldn't quote this to somebody new to Northern, I"d quote something probably some like Ann Sexton' You've been gone to long or maybe Patti Austin 'I've given all my love' or anything Lorraine Chandler or Eddie Parker, as these were the song's that made me love it originally & I'm sure I'd 'spread the love' with those. Is that other thread a piss take? cos I think it is (not everyone obviously) or am I too naive to grasp it? I have a poker playing mate who's about 28-29 and sent him part of my book (nearly finished) and and he asked why I thought NEXT IN LINE was the business. I sent him the sound and he adored it. I sent him lots of other you-tube nighter clips, BUT NEXT IN LINE was the one for him. Just shows we werent wrong then. The fact that someone can adore one tune, and another equally discerning soul fan dismiss it out of hand makes perfect sense to me. A lot of the tunes above ( in fact 99% were or are the mainstays of the scene and by their very nature have become hackneyed, played out or just awful from the get go, yet to explain it to a newcomer you have to go right back to the roots warts and all. There are many tunes still around today that I heard 40 years ago for the first time, and they still send the old shivers up me spine but there are others that did it for me then, that I wouldn't care less if I never heard again. Next in line is good example of a tune I never tire of but things like Interplay( which I ran to the dance floor for c 77) now make me squirm with embarrassment . One mans meat ect ect. As I have aged so have my dietary needs So as regards a tune that explains the scene ... There aint one Just loads of good, bad and indifferent ones that mean something or nothing to the individual.... Today LaReine Lamar is a top tune and sums up my scene..... but 35 years ago I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought.......... A cd could be filled with one sound from every year of the scene,every style,type,group/male/female/instrumental and there would still be other directions left open Me i still think after all this time (got into the music `71) it´s just got something(personal) you get it or you don´t. I can't really choose any sound because as I wrote elsewhere it has a lot to do with place, gear, company and circumstance. However, I worship those two records. They express unbelievable brilliance in words and music that surpass many other records. In my humble opinion they make sounds like I AM NOTHING by AL WILLIAMS , well , sound like nothing.
