ANDY Smith (Portishead) brings the Northern Soul south

Resident Advisor - Australia

.DJ Andy Smith (UK) is coming to Melbourne on Thursday 19 August for a night of heartache and handclaps. Andy is probably best known for his role as tour DJ for Portishead, however there is a bit more to him as he also is one half of Dynamo Productions with production partner Scott Hendy.

Andy is a dedicated crate-digger who has more than proven that the Dynamo Productions flavor of funky hip hop and rare soul breaks will cut it on dancefloors around the world. He'll being playing a night of pure Northern Soul alongside Melbourne's finest Northern DJs, Vince Peach and Pierre Baroni (PBS) at First Floor in Fitzroy.

For further enticement, the first 100 through the door receive a free exclusive 'Andy Smith presents Northern Soul at London's Jazz Cafe' CD.

First Floor is located at 1/393 Brunswick St, Fitzroy. Doors open from 8pm. Get in quick for your presale tickets for only $12, avaliable online only at www.sjooshi.com . More tickets will be available on the door if not sold out. Sounds like a delightful evening of music for the soul.

This guy turned up at SITC 2/3 months ago & gave me a couple of his Northern

"mix"CDs. ( Not in leiu of an entrance fee I may add ;-) )

Seemed a nice enough guy & playing his hip hop etc he's probably very good but as for mixing Northern, just don't go there. The CD is full of the most obvious records e.g.

S.O.S etc & it seems rather than actually mixing it's almost as if he's just switched from one deck to the other in a rather careless way ( ha ha sounds a bit like me)

It really is a dreadful case of jumping on the bandwagon I feel.

Apparently at one of his nights at The Jazz Cafe he went down rather well (I hear) but with a young "general" crowd whos idea of Northern Sole (sic) probably involved a fish supper !

Anyway I guess if they enjoyed it 1 or 2 may actually want to investigate the music further.

Will dig out the CD tonight if I haven't used it as an ash tray & post track listing tomorrow
