When Gail Anderson - Be proud you are in love - Was still covered up. I bought Gene and Eddy - Its no sin for £3 off Pat Brady.

Forgot about it for about 15 years, and over say the last 10 years, its become a quite popular collectors record. Sounds great out loud.

im ashamed to admit it but this track still catches me out

its a buggar that one, another that's hard to get due to the title is Dee Dee - I haven't got anything better to do, its a pig to remember at the best of Times, especially when you are looking at a copy of 'I'm so glad I'm a Woman' and some of her other tracks.... took me years to actually get a copy simply because I either bought the wrong single, or could not remember the title!!

My mate Crispie once bought a pressing of Stubborn Heart thinking it was actually the then newly discovered "Lover" by The Delites, I said why on earth did you think that could be The Delites and he said he thought they were singing "stubborn ooh ooh heart ooh"

A mate of mine said to me, whilst your in the record bar keep an eye out for TALK TO ME. I asked him who the artist was he said "I thought you were a record collector, its by Sue Lynn

Cant remember the exact title, but I'm pretty sure I can't have been the only one who bought the Epic 45 by Luther Vandross which has a very similar title to the one on Cottilion "Dont Wanna Be A Fool" - worse part is that I sold my Cottilion 45 before the Epic one arrived in the post - and still don't have one :-(

I lost someone - James Brown on King thinking it was the same as the track on hell.

Ernie, I nearly did the same thing, but luckily I remembered the 'King' version from his "Live at the Apollo" LP. On the same subject, I wonder how many people have bought Clyde McPhatter's "One More Chance" on Mercury thinking it was the version from his "Welcome Home" Lp?

Didn't actually happen to me, but over 30 years ago I was going through a friend's records which his mum and dad gave him that they no longer wanted. I found a copy of "Where Is The Love" by Glen Miller on Doctor Bird. When I asked him what it was (without even playing it), he said his mum bought it in the late '60s thinking it was the bandleader Glenn Miller who recorded things like "In The Mood" and "A String of Pearls" - needless to say she was disappointed by it! Of course, at the time it meant nothing to me - records like these could be found in Daddy Kool's bargain basement at the time for around 70p, simply because hardly anyone wanted them.

Time moved on, and so did my mate - to Manchester. We have remained in touch ever since, and he was even best man at my wedding. Now, about 8 years ago, when I heard that "Where Is The Love" was going big (and still not having heard it myself yet) I asked him if he remembered that Glen Miller single he had in his collection. To my surprise, he still had it, and couldn't believe his luck when I sold it for him for £100!

Many years ago I bought an unknown record by Johnny Robinson "Gone But Not Forgotten" on a Okeh demo for next to nothing.

.

I thought it might be a male version of Cissy Stone "Gone But Not Forgotten" on Decca!!!

Did I get a pleasant surprise!!!

Technically speaking this record I'm on about doesn't fit properly into this thread - it's more of a "danger beware" warning.

Went to look at some records last week with a view to buying some to sell on.

In amongst piles of 1970's Elvis albums and Country & Western singers I'd never heard of was this solitary import hiding amongst some Gary Glitter 45s.

On first glance I must admit my heart did beat a little bit faster then after a little bit o' thinking I calmed down and filed it in the box marked "bet that looks like it could be brilliant but probably sounds like an elephant farting".

Curiosity got the better of me and I took it along with some other Jerry Lee Lewis 45s.

Daredn't play it when I got home just in case.

But then I did....oh!

Let's just say - if you ever see a copy on Ebay just move away from that 'Buy It Now' button. Move away now.

Please don't press 'Send' or you'll be sorry.

derek

What was that animal called Nelly in that kids nursery rhyme?

i can remember being at the 100 club in the mid eighties and buying a copy of ty karim "lighten up baby" on romark off Guy H assuming it was the belting 60s gem.I couldn't wait to get home and give it a spin, boy oh boy was i dissapointed! so dissapointed i threw it across the room.Bloody hell i'd just blown £7 on a slow durge of a record, however i did manage to sell it a week later and get my money back  funny how tastes change as i'd give my right arm to own it now and to be fair its probably rarer than the original version.

Has this or similar happened to anyone else?

Wow. Ditto exactly the same story (apart from the owning one now bit). Look at it now

I used to go to The 100 Club in the late 80's and would hear Butch playing Mr Soul and then this tune called "What Shall I Do".

We used to travel down monthly to hear these two and I started to scour lists to see if I could find this tune - obviously to no avail!

So I bought Anita Humes and Essex and then Frankie and The Classicals - both ok records in their own right but obviously not THE storming atmospheric magical tune I was after.

The song: Little Walter and The Admirations on La Cindy - I was hardly likely to have found it in the local PDSA charity shop!

At Wigan in the 70s I bought "love games" A-Z by the Royal Jokers on Wingate thinking it was Willie Hutch

Also i found Willie Hutch "Get ready for the get down" on Motown for 10p one lunchtime - I thought I'd uncovered Richard;s big cover up (ZZ&C0) and was over the moon until I got home. Needle hits vinyl - joy goes to instant disappointment.

I also got the Al Johnson Marina LP in 1980 in London, thinking I'd found Bobby thurston "Just ask me" ......

I spent a small fortune trying to find a 45 titled either "call me" or "call on me".

Barbera Mercer, Bobby Bland, Dynell's etc etc, and when Emmit Long got delivered , I nearly died ! ALL THAT MONEY ON THIS S*@T !! (love it now though). Then I hit gold, I'd actually found it , and for only £30 !! It was Percy Millem.......and I'd been through hundreds of boxes , and dismissed it out of hand due to the mind set ( at the time ) of "that can't be it, it's too cheap!" :ohmy:frusty2.gif . Lesson well learned !!
