But the "DIvs" are not in your scene are they? Do you go to Blackpool or Tenerife Stevie? Or are you advocating no soul unless you go there, your venue, your rules.

Such people are found in all walks of life, however some venues seem to attract more than their fair share. If you don't mind rubbing shoulders with them then that's your choice. Just don't expect me to do the same.

And no, I have never been to Blackpool or Tenerife and I can't see myself making plans to do so anytime soon.

by initially I meant in your own youth, not as in @ tiles or the scene club or brazennose street, I attended my first nighter when I was 17.

But again Geese how do you know they werent then took a few years off. I applaud what you do but not everybody can and therefore dont deserve elitist derision. I listen to what I consider to be rare stuff at home but when I'm out I prefer to dance to mainly oldies as my lady is not as into it as I am. And I was 15 lol. I will still come to the Star next saturday

Is it me or is their a hint of hypocrisy in there. I guess you include Mr Roberts in your promoters criticism. The same Mr Roberts who also promotes Kings Hall, the same nighter you include in your footer. So I wonder why you include this reference to attract his punters into your venue? If your music/event doesnt wish to associate itself with these embarrassments why drive in its slipstream? Change wouldnt have these shenanigans in there, but then again doesnt get 1,000 punters in either, free or not. Please note I havent criticised your venue's music choice cuz I happen to like it as well, and long may it reign. And the scene had attracted a lot of embarrasing daytrippers long before you joined it in the 80's Geese

would Gordon Ramsey the a hypocrit if he opened up next to macca D's, no he'd just be offering an alternative. Mark you've offered some really articulate responses, but to what end? are you seriously defending this sh*te, offcourse each to there own, but for someone with an obvious interlect what are you trying to defend? The commercial explotation of a once proud underground scene? Or the opportunity of some to p8ss around in a really embarasing manner?

Mark, nobody deserves elitist derision..... but surely YOU would/should prefer to dance to whatever grabs you by the heart strings......or the bollox ? ......be it oldies, newies or just plain bollox grabbers (otherwise known as R&B)!

Your lady may is probably lovely (I'm sure she is).......but soul is soul......come say hello at the Star, I'm the fat ugly cnut! (Geese is fatter & uglier mind!)

155 posts on one thread on it's first day. Strewth. Is that a record?

Taken me a while to read through to be honest and not surprised to see many expressing strong opinions and some saying "so what", more or less.

Personally only been to one weekender this year....Tried Brid with a pal and had a great weekend away from the norm. Spent most of our time in the modern & rare rooms with main room for bit of entertainment, people watching as well as the odd dance and atmos in there. But no arm-linked dancing it's fair to say (or did I miss it?!). Had a great time / heard some truly great records / had a beer or two etc / no kids waking me up at 6am Sunday morning. Result, and needed it at the time.

Would I go to that or another one like it again? Prob not as I enjoy local(ish) nights out too much instead, and further travels when I can. Family time is precious on Sundays and I need sleep as much as soul.

Anyway, seeing the clip today got me thinking how I'd have reacted if that had happened at said weekender I went to, if I was in the room at the time. Think it's fair to say I'd have maybe stood and watched for a short moment in quiet disbelief, maybe would have sent a text to Len with a "lol" or two and perhaps just thought..."so this is what maybe happens at the end of a night in a main room at a weekender by the sea-side?...Not for me, didn't expect that, but whatever", then back to the smaller room or nearest place serving chips.

Been to enough AMAZING nights this year to feel happy with chosen soul nights out every fortnight or so, as well as soul nights in...Will be for many years to come I hope, no matter what, and have met some great people / made some great new friends along the way.... Would I want to hold hands and dance with any of them at a Northern or other soul night / event? No thanks, not really even on NYE, but some people obviously do after a drink.

.....I do like holding hands and dancing with my kids to soul music in the house though. That IS good fun, so long as no one records it!

All the best, Steve

I have avoided this thread for a while to ponder all points and hopefully bring about some closure for myself......

What would not have been so bad, would have been them actually dancing the okey bloody cokey to the okey cokey tune not Tobi Legend...

Anyone who had truly and I mean truly experienced what it was like to hear TWPYB as the penultimate tune played at Station Rd would have found it uncomfortable surely?... Yes this is being

precious but I actually really care ..possibly to much some may say,, but that's how it affects me....

Why not finish the event with Auld Lang what's its face if people want to get in circles and hold hands.

cant believe how out hand things get on here sometimes, so sorry if I caused any offence, and if I'm honest my contribution certainly wasnt designed to humiliate anybody, people do like to enjoy themselves in a variety of ways, sometimes our passion for what we hold so dear gets in the way of contributing to something thats wrong if its intention is to belittle poeple. In my defence what I said was was out of frustration derected at the ever increasing commercialisation of our passion. I just wish someone more elliquent than me, Mr Godin perhaps, was around to chip his two peneth in on the state of all things soulful.

thank fook there's others out there that think the scene is becoming a joke,i had a sebatical for 4yrs from the scene due to my daughters attending a ballet school in london(couldnt even go to the 100 club).this ment visiting every weekend, and when i got round to rekindling my desire for the scene i found most of the familiar faces had all but vanished and have been replaced with a "pantomine cast",even the music has gone backwards i was becoming disalusioned with the scene.stoke gave me a bit of a lift but even here its changed from when i was a regular,i need a venue with a good mix of underplayed oldies, new discoveries and a forward thinking dj crewe with some modern thrown in to break it up with no talc nazis -any suggestions??

Wots wrong with your more recent visited venues as stated in the afore said posting nothing to do with Kev Roberts i Hope.

Glad to see you managed to slip off some weekends as stated in your post on A Specific Venue & The Record That Reminds You Of It .

As far as "pantomine cast" they do appear at most venues that end with the Hokey Cokey or as they like to call it The Okeh Cokey and over seen by the lord of the dance himself as seen on the clip .lmao.

But fear not my Soul Brothers & Sisters The Telegraph is on to it before it gets out of hand

Ahh - "nostalgia" described as a serious form of returning sickness and a longing for past times, that's why I don't care for this thread topic.

Bye bye - but do play nicely amoung yourselves, whilst seriously being so out of touch and so not in focus with any current soulfull value's.

Have fun.

Well said Pete S. Myself I have always been into the music , but not always active by going out anymore on a regular basis. Each to there own. We all meet people who have claims about being at Station Road or like NS then quote ( maybe Out on the floor or The Snake) as an example. They have their view and thats fair enough. The fact that I like to hear ( maybe Ray Agee or Cecil Washington) in preference dont make me any better or any worse.

I still hear a "new" sound and try to get it for myself. That is what keeps me going, well that and viagra.

good post pete.. yes they look sad and will be embaressing if non soulie friends see it and think thats what im about...it doesnt piss me off and i dont think it threatens my part of our scene.....i go to kings hall once a year and have a great time ,never been to blackpool and even before this video dont think i ever will....

how long will these big weekenders of same old tunes to the same even older faces last do you think?...surely most oldies fans wanting nostalgia have got to be getting on a bit now...in maybe 5 years i think most of these would have stoppped going out,the youngsters getting into it through these events will still be young and hopefully will by then be looking for more soul than whats on 'goldmine sevens' and attending smaller venues playing 'newer' selections...i hope

its kinda ironic really....as has been said these events are more like a social to a lot of people and they just wanna dance to records played at wigan etc....i wonder how many would get really nostalgic and still go if the alnighters started at 12pm and dindnt serve alcohol!!

and so not in focus with any current soulfull value's. Thank god for that, its a Northern Soul scene we are talking about not HOUSE MUSIC the natural progression I think you called it. You have clearly seen the light, feel free to step into it and close the door quietly behind you, after all there will be plenty of room in there for you both. Chin chin old boy

Fashions change but style remains the same.

Unfortunately Northern has lost its style......which for me was the attraction initially.

Its an association thing I suppose.

I must admit I like the odd oldies night to reminisce that Im in a sweat filled venue or even thinking Im back at the Mecca where I probably had one of the most happier times of my life . I prefer an across the board venue for today and like I said in my previous post lets look at all the tracks played before making an absolute judgement based on a you tube/facebook clip no matter how cringy it looks and I can understand how the extremely passionate see it as really horrendous. AS a self confessed member of the Soul police I can be very critical at times but most times I back it up with facts (I have made mistakes as well). So lets see the playlists to see whether the Media presented is representative of the the whole event. Im not a KR fan at all infact I had a bloody good row with his former company about their attitude. However he does provide a product that does suit some people - Each to their own! My only gripe would be if he provided something that actually wasnt what was advertised- Then" IM in for the Kill"

My attitude is people can do what they like as long as they dont harm me - my family or my friends in whatever they do. However if they do I dont let it go which is a failing of mine!

hello my old sparing partner :wicked: yeh i managed to visit blackpool weekender in 09 and i havent been back since and i went to prestatyn to see my all time soul star-chuck jackson,i paid for the weekend as they dont do day passes i was informed, so we stayed long enough to see his performance and left immediatley after as the rest of the event wasnt worth the cash.i know what your trying to hint at that iam a hypocrit? ive been trying to capture the essence of my time on the scene when there were alot more venues trying to be forward thinking ie bradford,morcambe,keele,100 club, parr hall etc when they mixed it up a bit more.today scene is the same oldies format at the same venues ive visited and alot of the punters. All i want is a line up of djs with an imagination-whats yours like irish spinner????

Yesterday, when this thread started, it was Thanksgiving. A day of great import to the guys and girls who sang, played on or produced the music we love.

I give thanks, that I have the chance to pick and choose where to go. And thanks that this scene gave me the experience to know what I like.

And while I cant bear to look at the clip. I cant help but think back to one of my fave memories of the Cleethorpes Weekenders. Possibly in 2001 or 03. Somewhere around then. A weekend where the music policy was to my liking. Butch playing the top sounds. Ady unleashing his RCA stuff on the crowd. Rarity and quality all weekend, in equal measure.

Records for sale that had the mouth watering and the bank manager quivvering.

72 hours of soul talk.

Then on the Sunday night. Fancy dress comps, Top 500 sounds, all rounded off with a packed ballroom, including people standing on tables, singing along to - Baby I Need You're Lovin.

Not cool. Not 'Northern Soul'. But just perfect at the end of a rare soul fest. And maybe even a subconcious doffing of the cap, to where we all began our Northern Soul journeys. If you werent there, and saw it on U tube, then maybe you'd cringe too. But if you were there. it was as much part of the fun, as Butch reactivating a forgotten oldie, or Little Ann belting out a gem that is revered, only within the sweaty walls of a few exclusive venues.

Sorry to say this thread is fast becoming like "the scene"......TIRED!

totally agree, been done to death over and over again, and just becomes a vehicle to vent their anger/passion? at what's happening and it all comes about because of a failure to recognise/accept there are 2 scenes. If there was no call for events like Blackpool they wouldn't be successful. Pete S summed it up pretty well, people want to go out and enjoy themselves, if you don't like these kind of events don't go, it's not rocket science. As events they're not going to go away............
