Monster Ballads Hiding On B-Sides Of Northern Classics

I got a Jimmy Connor - Lets Get Married last year, fab track, but knocked out of the park for The reality of life, an all time favourite!! Makes the flip sound plaintive, and that SAX...!!

both sides of this record are great, but aren't they both about the same tempo?

Yep good call. :hatsoff2: Got this for the hi-octane, fast stepper 'I'm Not Satisfied' And regularly play the gorgeous ballad, gem of a flip 'There He Is'

Also the Deon Jackson ballad 'I Need A Love Like Yours' (flip of the faster 'I Can't Go On' (Carla) ).

(Recently danced to 'I Can't Go On' @Banbury last week. Well played that DJ, and the bod who requested it! )

Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread, I love slow soul records and most of the ones mentioned are unknown to me. Will try to hear them. I think these type of tunes are ideal for the early part of an alldayer.

One I'd suggest for this thread is the flipside of the 7th Avenue Aviators' You Should O' Held On, Boy Next Door, absolutely beautiful record, heard it first at Brid weekender in 2010, now Mick H has been playing it for some time too.

Dave the uptempo sides of minit and keyman are different songs with different titles not same song released twice.

Dylan, yes I know mate that's why I said "What Is This" (Keymen release not Minit). Perhaps should have made it clearer.

Both the Keymen and Minit are titled "What Is This" though.

A few not mentioned yet I think (dancer/known side in brackets):

Josephine Taylor - Depend On Me (Smooth Groove)

(Right now this would get my vote for the greatest deep track ever and this was the A Side)

Alfreda Brockington - I'll Wait For You (Chained & Bound)

(just a shame this one fades a bit too quick, it's about 15 seconds longer on the reissue I think)

Tyrone Davis - A Woman Needs To Be Loved (Can I Change My Mind)

(was the A side when initially released - I have it on a solid black Dakar label - flipped after a few months)

charles burns on gene

ernie wheelwright on gaye

a couple more with great deep soul flips that are popular northern items.

I came across both these as deep soul 45s then realised as I was chasing them that they were also wanted for the uptempo sides.

I kept getting outbid and never got either.

Until the youtube era I'd never heard Ray Paige's "Don't Stop Now" on RCA, the other side of his version of Ain't No Soul. I'd never have thought of buying that, but the ballad side is immense.

He later re-cut it in a more latin style on Fania under his (presumably) real name, Rafi Pagan.

On a more recent in-demander I was very impressed by the ballad side of Double O's Demingoes "Color One Tear Black". I think the uptempo version of the same track wears pretty quickly but the slow version is a real mind-blower.

A couple more RCA's

Percy Wiggins The Work Of A Woman flip of It Didn't Take Much

Rose Valintine When The Heartaches End flip of I've Got To Know Right Now

Some killer sweet records that "funky northern" people are picking up on now for the flips are Now on Now and the Creators on Brewtown

Ultimations on Mar-V-Lus the better known side "Would I Do It Over" on the flip another superb offering "With Out You". Always wanted to know about this group? this is the only 45 I have by them? Did they record other records? were they recording under another name? .... and who was the writer of both sides, namely Po-Jo??(I've seen something like Po-Jo on other Chicago 45''s) Anyone know.... Bob?

Great thread but tricky because many of the ballads were the official A-sides anyway.

Here are some of my favourite ballads which were B sides (or which were mostly overshadowed in the UK by their uptempo sides)...

Jimmy Mack - Go On (Palmer)

The Ambers - Now I'm In Trouble (Verve)

Edwin Starr - Harlem (Ric-Tic)

The High Keys - Let's Take A Chance (Verve)

Jerry Williams - Yvonne (Calla)

Bobby Sheen - Sweet Sweet Love (Capitol)

Troy Keyes - I'm Crying (Inside) (ABC)

O'Jays - I'll Be Sweeter Tomorrow (Bell)

Freddie Hughes - He's No Good (Wand)

Bob Relf - Big Brother (Mirwood)

Prince Harold - Forget About Me (Mercury)

Billy Harner - Fool Me (Open)

Ted Ford - Please Give Me Another Chance (Sound Stage 7)

Johnny Moore - It's Just My May Of Loving You (Date)

Hoagy Lands - True Love At Last (UK American) [...and only issued in the UK]

Little Johnny Blair - Easier To Say Than Do (Silver Fox)

Donnie Elbert - That's If You Love Me (All Platinum)

The Young Hearts - Oo La We (Avco) [this was the B side of LJ Reynolds & The Chocolate Syrup when issued by Phonogram in the UK]

Four Wonders - Haven't We Been Good For Each Other (Solid Foundation)

Benny Johnson - Give It Up (Today)

Johnny Baker - Donnie O (Fog City)

Johnny Baker - Accept Me As I Am (Cisco)

Willie & Anthony - It's Never Too Late (Blue Candle)

Third Point - Poor Boy (Tide)

Norma Jenkins - Love Jones (Desert Moon)

Freddie Hughes - Sarah Mae (Greg-Uh-Rudy)

Jimmy Beaumont & The Skyliners - The Day The Clown Cried (Drive)

Oscar Perry - Come On Home To Me (Peri-Tone)

Barbara Hall - Drop My Heart Off At The Door (Innovation II) [this was the B side when issued by EMI in the UK]

Ray Godfrey - I'm The Other Half Of You (Event)

Carol Anderson - I'll Get Off At The Next Stop (Fee)

I know that the Ultimations actually are from Chicago (unlike every single act on the set of labels) as the Tra-Mor record owner told me he got into music by meeting one of them. The lineup is even known and in the first soul harmony singles book, not sure the source of the info, but I have never talked to anyone from the group.

I think the Jo in Po-Jo is Jimmy Jones. I'm too lazy right now to look up the actual writers but can if it's important. I think I've also seen Po-So, maybe on a Sheryl Swope 45?

Cheers Bob, yeah Po-So! your right I remember now it's the credits on Sherl's Duo release "How You Feel" and "Let's get the Show on the Road", I have this but the her name is down as Sherl Swote on my issue. Sounds like I need to get a copy of that book!

Go on, the flip of jimmy mac my world is on fire.

Yes - used this B side as an example on another site years ago - and the topic thread you may ask was that "love/hate" term "Crossover".

Thanks sheldonsoul  .
