As I said in a previous post mate, it's all opinions. Don't like his more uptempo numbers but for me Donnie Elbert comes into his own on some great ballads.

Being a ballad & deep soul lover i think "Can't Get Over Losing You" is f'kin' fabulous.

What Can I Do

Everything To Me

Ohh Baby Baby

are also great (IMO)

I shall try to listen and be prepared to eat my words as usual, its not the falsetto thing its just that he cant even stay in tune at such a high pitch, and I am prepring to be amazed.

Doug Banks has a lot more going for it than the likes of Soft Walkin, Let me be your boy, Emperor and all those similar things - much nearer "Northern Soul".

This is true, the original aim of the thread was to try and pick a record which was played but nobody appeared to like it at the time or even now. Something like "Take a letter Maria" by Boots Randolph for instance.

I like Soft Walkin, and Let Me Be Your Boy, but can't stand Kept on dancing or Emperor Of My Babys Heart!

I don't think you're ever going to find a record that nobody liked, it would have to be something that was only ever played once, and no one danced to really. And what kind of no one liked? Some people like a record, but not to dance to, and some people don't mind dancing to a record they don't like!

great prod and song on this, and the voice aint as bad as much of his stuff but It'd be better with a whole lot of other 60's soul singers vocal on it. I can hear a fantastic version by chuck or Clyde Mcphater in my head.

Yes I could see both Chuck Jackson and Clyde Mcphatter doing great versions - but I like Donnies take - Along Came Pride is a great tune too ( as posted by Sebastian) and is available on 45 on the flip of Get Ready on British.

Cheers

Has the Joe 90 thing been mentioned yet.? Remember hearing it and thinking "Northern Soul is dead".

True Kev but I remember it being massive along with Men from Uncle, Cherry People & Gary Lewis, it's amazing what those little night time helpers made you dance to & remember EVERYONE was your bestest mate in the world after talking bo**ox to them for 10 minutes :hypo: , young, foolish but fun & don't forget Rain featuring Charity Brown.

Spot. :shades:

While I'm watching the site closely for all the saddest reasons, I'd just like to add an observation or two:

When finding/playing newer sounds and discoveries, perfection is a luxury DJs can ill afford, and dancefloor reaction dictates how much play and how 'big' a record gets. Some of them weren't great, but a lot were. Also, in the past, there was a big turnover in music, with records arriving, getting big, getting re-issued, then dying - all in the space of a few months. This created a constant flow of fresh music, similar to the pop charts. That has almost completely vanished, leading to the build up of a huge pool of very good, very rare records which (for the most part) will never get massive. A record gets big when there are a few copies, held by several busy, influential DJs or it is a one-off being played week in week out at a well attended venue. Consequently a one-off played every week at Wigan, the Catacombs or Blackpool Mecca could get big. Such weekly 'lead' venues have gone forever I'm afraid.

Also you should always judge a record by your initial reaction, not years later when you've heard it a million times and are sick to the teeth of it. However with the benefit of hindsight, there is no need for mediocrity when selecting oldies. There are hundreds of really good ones to choose from. DJs have a responsibility, a moral duty if you like, to play good oldies. It is unforgivable to pick and promote an oldie which is best left forgotten. The dilemma, once some DJ has already done this, is whether to play the 'so-so' oldie or refuse to play it, on request, risking wrath and credibility with the dancing public.

I don't want to talk about individual tracks, but feel I should add that "Suzy's Serenade" was a floor filler, and played purely for that reason. Similarly "Cochise" was an outstanding, powerhouse new release which just had to be played. It was also relatively scarce for a couple of weeks as an US album track. It suffered the fate of becoming too big (a number one northern monster) for its own good, but doesn't deserve criticism from a technical standpoint. They both deserve a place in the pantheon of Northern Soul. On the other hand, we have records like Dawn which should simply never have been played at all. I would not be playing any of these at home in the foseeable future. They have all had their day, unlike the other Bob Wilson classic (vocal) "Feels Good" which I still love and play.

My humble views... take with a big pinch of salt.

Pep

GOOD POINTS PEP,but as l and others have said there were other factors at work back in the day combined with youth.........which are not there now......so it,s not just a matter of hearing things a trillion times over.........with age comes a bit of reality/wisdom/common sense/ability to sort the wheat from the chaff....atb best fella tezza....funnily enough the bloke that kept asking you to play dean parrish "i,m on my way" many moons ago

The F***in' Snake!!!!

Glad someone said it before I did. If someone can take a stab at Epitome Of Sound, then certainly this corny piece of garbage masked as a "northern classic" can do some time on the chopping block too. when I first got into really seriously collecting northern records, I remember picking up a copy in a shop to listen to because it had "all-time northern classic" or something to that extent penned on the sleeve, and thought "well I've gotta listen to this one". I almost pulled out of this game entirely after hearing that one (glad of course I didn't). Luckily I've never heard anyone play it out on a night, but then again I've never been to a proper do in the UK, so I'm sure my chance will come some day.

Oh it will mate, it will! It is probably the most requested record I get asked for, and therefore the source of much disgruntlement. The standard conversation goes:

Have you got The Snake?

No!

Why not, what sort of DJ are you to not have The Snake?

Because it's fucking crap and I'm not, that's why.
