Yes, good thread. Firstly, sjclement; it did get plays as a new release in the 70's; agree...great under-rated choon.

This is right up my street...so many great sounds...stompers a loose term really, particularly considering today & relative to the 70's...but still, let's give it a go in that spirit:

  1. Solid Solution - Think About It Girl
  2. Timeless Legend - I Was Born To Love You
  3. Patterson Twins - Gonna Find A True Love
  4. Odyssey - Battened Ships
  5. Will Collins & Willpower - Anything I Can Do
  6. The Innersection - Let Me Love Yuh
  7. Split Decision - Watchin' Out
  8. Southside Movement - Do It To Me
  9. The Bitter & The Sweet - I Won't Have Any Babies For You
  10. Reflections - Three Steps From True Love

Sorry; should have made clear that as per my last post the intention was to capture the spirit of today & relative to the 70's:-) Personally, I don't know when it was first played!

Decided that's not very clear either:-)

My intention was to demonstrate that the many listed from that era can fit today and was providing some that are accepted today and are not too dissimilar...there, hope that's clearer :-)

Not sure if these have been mentioned from the era:-

  1. Soulful Strings - Burning Spear
  2. Life - Tell Me Why
  3. Funky Sisters - Do It To It
  4. George Benson - On Broadway
  5. Dynatones - Fife Piper
  6. Mistura - Flasher
  7. Johnny Williams - You're Something Kinda Mellow
  8. Rufus Wood - Before 2001
  9. Soulvation Army Band - Dancing On A Daydream
  10. Flaming Embers - Have Some Everybody

I made the point that the Word Stomping was also used to describe a style of Dancing to pounding uptempo Soul,i'm not trying to redefine anything to suit my preferences just stating how things were for me.I'm sure most people my age will be familiar with seeing this style of Dancing performed to records like The Champion,So Is The Sun,Psychadelic Soul, etc.Later on the style was modified with a bit more footwork and used to dance to the 70s uptempo numbers already highlighted in the thread. These uptempo 70s records in my opinion have just as much relevence on the Northern Soul Scene as say The Jewels. Why pigeon hole the word stomper surely there can be 60s stompers and 70s stompers Not got a clue what your Fat old bald men comment is about but i know many who would still love to be able to Stomp like they used to to at Clfton Hall to Janice. All i wanted to do mate was talk about RECORDS and the fact that at a lot of soul nights nowadays the 70s danceable stuff is overlooked and its a shame.I would love to hear the odd few thrown in to playlists just to remind us of how good some of em still sound out loud

Come along to the Grand Central at Skegness mate you'll hear plenty getting played there ;-)

I used to play two tracks of the 'Love's On The Menu' LP at time of release; "I'm Going Left" and the excellent "I Don't want Nobody To Know".... long forgotten.

Anybody remember Mike Theodore Life Orchestra "Nightime Shadows". I may be wrong but I don't think it was ever officially uncovered because the record faded into the distance never to be played again.

I've enjoyed this thread - obviously everyone was a lot younger when this lot was first played but the sides highlighted just seem to have so much more energy than the wave of modern sides that came about at the end of the 80s, Jesse James, If You Want a Love Affair etc.

The 45 shown there is on a different label to the LP as well . The LP was on the 'Cooking' label apparently (?)........Seem to remember Sam playing it from a 45 but assumed perhaps wrongly it was an emi just like the 7" of Hot Dog he was playing (Casino Strut) was rather than the 12" it was released on.

Sam acquired the 45 from Richard (neither of them played it from an album). To be honest I've never seen the album. Maybe someone has a scan.

Sorry to drag this one up again but I've had a few messages / e-mails since posting this up. Firstly does anyone know where the sound clip on Youtube came from as I'd like to contact whoever posted it on there to find out if it was dubbed from an album or from the 45. The debate seems to continue about the 45 with no-one (at the moment) knowing of another copy. Your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

This thread is right up my street as it was not long after this that I stopped travelling north, due to (a) gun pulled on my best mate at the time and (b) the fact that many of the tracks mentioned were being played in some of ther top southern jazz funk venues. Which makes me wonder why no one has mentoned I Love Music - O'Jay's and Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel - Tavares as they perfectly fit the style of dancing which started the thread. Many of the tracks mentioned such as Spaceark, Calif Malibus, Cameo, World Column, Willie Brown, Gil Scott Heron and Rufus Wood have always remained firm favourites.

Sitting here now I wonder if Street Dance by the Fatback Band ever got played as I could see it suiting the dance stye ,but I cannot remember ever hearing it, or is it just too Funky and not obscure enough.
